First make both captures repeatable; only then tune comparison tolerance. Otherwise, rendering noise can hide a real regression or create distracting false alarms.
What a visual regression diff shows
A visual regression diff compares a screenshot from the current build with an approved screenshot baseline. The comparison identifies changed pixels or regions; the inspection view helps you determine whether the change is a defect, an intentional UI update, or irrelevant rendering variation. Playwright’s screenshot assertions and Chromatic’s review tools both support this baseline-and-current-image workflow (Playwright visual comparisons; Chromatic Diff Inspector).
Choose a view that makes the change visible
Overlay
An overlay places the current image over the baseline, making shifted edges, changed dimensions, and missing or moved elements easier to locate in context. Chromatic calls its unified comparison view “1 Up”; its Diff Inspector marks changed areas in neon green (Chromatic Diff Inspector).
Side by side
A split view shows the baseline and current screenshot next to each other. Use it to understand the surrounding layout and distinguish a local text or asset change from a broader shift. Chromatic’s split view is called “2 Up,” with changes highlighted in the new snapshot (Chromatic Diff Inspector).

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Strobing
Rapidly alternating the baseline and current image can reveal small movements that are difficult to spot in a static view. Chromatic refers to this as diff strobing or “party mode” (Chromatic Diff Inspector).
Make the screenshots comparable before tuning tolerance
A useful diff depends on capturing the same page or component state in both runs. Keep the viewport, browser, test data, and other relevant conditions steady where possible. Playwright captures screenshots until two consecutive screenshots match before saving the last capture, which helps avoid comparing an unstable intermediate frame; it does not eliminate all environment variation (Playwright visual comparisons).
If an element is genuinely volatile and not part of what the test should verify, filter it during screenshot capture rather than making the entire comparison more permissive. Playwright documents applying a stylesheet to hide or otherwise filter volatile content. Do not mask meaningful UI: a test that excludes too much can pass while important visual behavior is broken (Playwright visual comparisons).

Set comparison thresholds deliberately
Playwright’s threshold setting controls the acceptable perceived color difference between corresponding pixels in YIQ color space. Its documented default is 0.2; zero is stricter and one is more permissive. The maxDiffPixels option is separate: it limits the total number of differing pixels that may be accepted. One setting governs when an individual pixel counts as different; the other governs how many such pixels are tolerated (Playwright PageAssertions API).

Do not raise tolerance simply to silence unexplained failures. Stabilize capture and filter only irrelevant dynamic content first, then adjust comparison settings with the remaining visual differences in mind.
Playwright example: compare and review a screenshot
Use Playwright’s screenshot assertion in a test after navigating to the same page state used to create the approved baseline. This JavaScript example sets a per-pixel threshold and a separate limit on the total differing pixels:

await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', {

});
The example’s pixel-count limit is a chosen test setting, not a Playwright default or a universal recommendation. Tune it to the page and review actual failures. Playwright’s screenshot comparison behavior, options, and baseline workflow are documented in its visual comparisons guide and PageAssertions API.
Update a baseline only after review
If the screenshot changed because of an intended UI update, inspect the diff and approve the new appearance before replacing the baseline. Playwright documents updating snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Do not use snapshot updates as a way to clear an unexplained failure: that can make a regression the new expected result (Playwright visual comparisons).

When a hosted visual review workflow helps
Chromatic’s documented Playwright integration captures page archives during tests, uploads them for snapshots and pixel diffing, and lets reviewers inspect results in its cloud app. Its Diff Inspector includes overlay, split, and strobing views (Chromatic Playwright setup; Chromatic Diff Inspector). Applitools Eyes describes comparing checkpoint images against a baseline and reporting differences it considers significant or noticeable to a human observer; that is the vendor’s description, not independent evidence that it always outperforms pixel comparison (Applitools Eyes overview).
When choosing a workflow, compare how baselines are stored and approved, what review views and debugging context are available, how dynamic content is handled, what matching controls exist, how well the tool fits your test runner and CI, and the operational effort of reviewing failures. These documented feature descriptions do not establish comparative accuracy, pricing, or value for a particular team.
Troubleshoot noisy or confusing diffs
Many pixels change between runs
- Likely cause: Captures differ in viewport, browser, page state, or test data, or a dynamic region changes between runs.
- What to do: Hold capture conditions steady, wait for the intended page state, and filter only truly irrelevant volatile content with a screenshot stylesheet where appropriate.
A small shift is hard to spot
- Likely cause: The static comparison view obscures movement or the change is subtle.
- What to do: Inspect an overlay, compare side by side, or rapidly toggle between the baseline and current image.
A real change is being tolerated
- Likely cause: The per-pixel threshold is too permissive, the maximum differing-pixel allowance is too high, or too much content is filtered.
- What to do: Review both settings separately, reduce tolerance where appropriate, and restore meaningful content to the comparison.
A test fails on an apparently unstable frame
- Likely cause: The page has not settled into the state intended for comparison.
- What to do: Make the test wait for the relevant state and keep the browser and page conditions consistent. Playwright’s repeat-capture behavior waits for two consecutive matching screenshots, but it cannot correct every source of environmental variation.
An update command would clear the failure
- Likely cause: The baseline may be stale, or the current build may contain an unintended visual regression.
- What to do: Inspect the changed region and decide whether the UI change is intended before updating snapshots.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean screenshot to inspect or attach to a review, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. Its capture options include full-page screenshots, element selection, viewport and device settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, and selector or network-idle waits. The service removes supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a visual regression test compare?
It compares a current screenshot with an approved baseline to find visual changes.
Does raising the threshold fix flaky visual tests?
Not necessarily. First stabilize the screenshot and filter only irrelevant dynamic regions; adjust tolerance only after reviewing representative differences.
