To keep message notifications arriving without showing their text on a locked Android phone, turn off sensitive lock-screen notification content. The messaging app stays available; Android hides the preview instead of requiring an app lock.
Hide message content on the lock screen
- Open Settings and tap Notifications. If the menus differ, use Settings search for “lock screen” or “notifications.”
- Open the lock-screen notification privacy setting. Google’s documented path is Settings > Notifications > Privacy > Notifications on lock screen. Depending on the phone and Android version, the option may instead appear under App & notifications > Notifications > Lock screen, with a label such as Sensitive notifications. Google’s Android notification instructions note that the available settings vary by phone.
- Turn off Show sensitive content or the equivalent setting. This keeps a notification cue while concealing its private details; Android’s notification design guidance describes private notifications as showing basic information such as the app name and icon.
- Lock the phone and send a test message from another device. Check what your phone actually displays, since labels and behavior can vary.
If the phone offers per-app lock-screen controls and you only want to change text messages, apply the restriction to the messaging app. Check that app’s notification settings too if the system setting does not produce the result you want.
Choose how much of the alert to show

These are notification-visibility choices, not ways to delete a message or encrypt a conversation. Hiding a preview also does not protect the message when the phone is unlocked. The available controls differ across manufacturers and Android versions.
Why Private Space is not the same fix
Android Private Space is a separate area for hiding and organizing apps, not a setting for masking previews from your regular messaging app. Google says apps in a locked Private Space are stopped and cannot perform foreground or background activity, including showing notifications. Android’s platform documentation also describes Private Space as a separate profile and notes that telephony intents are routed to the main user and display a notification. See Google’s Private Space setup guidance and the Android platform documentation. Some setup steps require Android 15 or later, and availability depends on supported hardware.

What this setting does not guarantee
- It changes what notifications reveal on the lock screen; it does not remove the message from the phone.
- It does not hide notifications everywhere or protect messages on an unlocked device.
- It does not establish that message text is absent from notification history or every other device surface. Check the phone’s own behavior rather than assuming the preview setting covers those places.
- A privacy screen protector may reduce off-angle viewing, but it does not change the notification content Android places on the lock screen.
