Use Playwright’s mask option to cover a changing element in a screenshot assertion, or use stylePath to hide or normalize it with capture-only CSS. Turn off animations when motion causes unstable frames, and generate baselines and comparisons in the same rendering environment.
Choose whether to cover or hide the changing content
First identify the smallest page region whose changing value or appearance is irrelevant to the assertion. Then choose a treatment based on whether you want the region to remain visibly represented or disappear from the captured image.

Masking is usually the more direct choice for a timestamp or changing avatar that the test should ignore. CSS is more appropriate when the box itself should not be visible in the image. In either case, keep the affected region narrow: a broad mask or stylesheet can conceal a genuine layout or rendering regression.
Mask a volatile element in a screenshot assertion
Pass one or more locators through the assertion’s mask option. For example, a test ID is a useful target when your application provides one:

});Masking applies to matched elements even when they are invisible. Choose a specific locator so the mask does not unexpectedly cover additional content, and inspect the screenshot diff after adding it.
Hide or normalize content with capture-only CSS
For page screenshot assertions, use stylePath to supply a stylesheet path or an array of stylesheet paths. This applies CSS for the screenshot rather than requiring a permanent application change. The stylesheet mechanism pierces Shadow DOM and applies to inner frames.

});CSS can also alter a volatile appearance or value instead of hiding it. The right rule depends on the application: verify that it leaves the behavior under test intact. In particular, hiding an element with visibility: hidden preserves its layout space, which may be useful if shifting surrounding content would make the comparison less meaningful.
Do not confuse the options for different screenshot APIs. stylePath is the documented stylesheet option for screenshot assertions. Locator screenshot capture uses a style option that takes stylesheet text.

Disable animation when motion creates unstable captures
Screenshot assertions default animations to "disabled". If you want that behavior to be explicit in the test, or need to compare it with another setting, specify it directly:

});With animations disabled, finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion and fire transitionend; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state during capture and played again afterward. Locator screenshot capture documents a different default: "allow". Set the option explicitly when using that API and motion matters. Disabling animation will not stabilize live text, refreshed data, or other content that keeps changing independently of animation; mask or style those regions separately.

Keep baselines and test runs in a consistent environment
Even after volatile page content and animation are handled, screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running visual tests in the same environment used to generate their baseline snapshots. Keep those conditions consistent where possible, including the browser and relevant settings.

Screenshot assertions also take captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing or saving the result. That helps with instability during capture, but it does not erase differences between rendering environments or determine which page content your test should ignore.
Apply the changes without hiding real regressions
- Identify the changing region. Decide whether the assertion should ignore the region entirely or keep its geometry while hiding its contents.
- Pick the narrowest treatment. Use a locator mask if a colored placeholder is acceptable; use
stylePathwhen the assertion should hide or normalize content with CSS. - Control motion if needed. Disable animations explicitly when they cause variation, especially with locator capture, whose documented default allows them.
- Match the baseline environment. Generate and compare snapshots using the same browser and host setup, headless mode, and relevant settings.
- Review the resulting diff. Confirm the mask or CSS affects only the intended region and leaves meaningful layout changes visible.
Troubleshooting common screenshot-test problems
The screenshot still changes after adding a mask
Check that the locator matches the volatile element and that the variation is inside its bounding box. Other changing regions may need their own narrow masks or CSS rules. If the variation comes from animation, configure animations as well.
The mask hides too much or misses part of the changing area
Use a more specific locator and inspect the matched element’s bounds in the captured image. Masking covers the bounding box, so a locator that matches a larger container can hide stable content and make the test less useful.

CSS hides content but the layout remains unexpected
visibility: hidden keeps the element’s layout box. If that is not the intended result, adjust the capture-only CSS to match the layout behavior the assertion should verify, then inspect the screenshot to ensure it does not hide a meaningful regression.
The assertion differs between machines despite stabilizing the page
Compare the rendering setup: operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect output. Generate the baseline and run comparisons in the same environment where possible.
