This controls which block types users can add; it does not remove blocks already in a post or hide published content from site visitors.
First identify which restriction you need: block availability in the editor, control over existing blocks, or visibility on the front end. The right method depends on that distinction.
Choose what you mean by “hide blocks”

The first row is the usual meaning of “hide blocks from specific users in the WordPress editor.” The inserter filter does not secure content or make an existing block disappear.
Restrict block types in the Gutenberg inserter with PHP
WordPress documents allowed_block_types_all as the current server-side filter for available block types. Its callback can return true to allow all block types, false to allow none, or an array of permitted block type names. The older allowed_block_types filter is deprecated. An allow-list is clearest when a user should have access to only a small set of block types. Replace the example block slugs and capability with the ones that match your site’s policy:

The WordPress Developer Blog uses publish_pages as an example condition; it is not a universal definition of an editor role. Confirm that the capability and list fit your site, including any custom post types or editor contexts you use.

Use a capability that matches the permission
Check capabilities rather than relying on a role name when possible. Roles can be changed by administrators or plugins, while current_user_can() asks whether the current user has a specified capability. WordPress also maps meta capabilities such as edit_post to the primitive capabilities a user needs. Read the current_user_can() reference and choose a capability that represents the action you want to distinguish.
Allow all but selected block types
If the restriction is small—only a few types should be hidden—start with the existing allowed list and remove those types. The Developer Blog’s tutorial shows both allow-list and disallow-list patterns, including conditions based on a user’s capability and the post type being edited. This can be easier to maintain than enumerating every permitted block when a site has many block types.

Add and verify the code safely
- Choose where the rule belongs. Put site-specific behavior in a small site plugin or a child theme rather than editing a parent theme directly, so a theme update does not overwrite the change.
- Confirm the editor and version. Establish whether the restriction should apply in the Post Editor, Site Editor, or both, and note the WordPress version. The hook’s callback receives editor context; the site’s intended scope should be checked rather than assumed.
- Adapt the condition and block names. Use the capability that represents the intended permission, and use registered block type names such as
core/paragraph. If the rule should differ by post type, use the editor context to define that condition. - Test on staging. Sign in with accounts that have the relevant capabilities, open the targeted editor, and inspect the inserter. Verify that permitted users retain their expected options and that restricted users see the intended set.
- Check existing content separately. Open pages with blocks that are now unavailable to a user. Filtering the inserter is not a substitute for locking those existing blocks or controlling their front-end visibility.
When hiding block types is not enough
Prevent changes to existing layout blocks
If an editor may add blocks but must not move or remove a prebuilt layout, investigate the Block Locking API. WordPress documents block_editor_settings_all as a way to control who may lock or unlock blocks. Locking governs editing actions; it is distinct from hiding block types in the inserter.
Hide published content from certain visitors
If the goal is to hide a block from logged-in users or another audience on the live site, use a front-end visibility rule. The Block Visibility plugin describes controls for specific users and user roles. RenderWhen for Blocks describes conditions based on user state and role, along with a preview feature for simulating a role. These approaches concern rendered content, not which blocks an editor can insert.

Prefer a graphical role-based editor configuration
Block Editor Roles describes per-role controls over block insertion and editing, including limiting editing to text changes. Its WordPress.org listing, accessed in 2026, reported fewer than 10 active installations and compatibility tested up to WordPress 6.9.9. Those figures are time-sensitive, so check the current listing and test compatibility with your WordPress version before relying on the plugin.

- Hide certain blocks from a user role in the editor: use
allowed_block_types_allwith a capability check when controlling the inserter. - Keep an existing layout intact: use block locking and decide who may lock or unlock it.
- Show or hide published blocks by audience: use front-end visibility conditions.
- Configure restrictions through a graphical interface: assess a role-based editor plugin, then check its current maintenance and compatibility information.
No single method covers all three jobs. Pick the one that controls the place where the restriction should take effect, then test it with the relevant accounts and content.
