Start by contacting the child’s school and agreeing on a manageable return and catch-up plan. Ask teachers to identify the most important learning to address, what can wait or be adapted, and what support will make the return feel safe and predictable. A child does not necessarily need to complete every missed assignment before going back.
1. Contact the school before the return
Ask for a meeting or call with a named school contact, ideally before the child’s first day back. Share the expected return date, the reason for the absence if you are comfortable doing so, any relevant health or support advice, and what the child is worried about. The plan should reflect why and how long the child was away, their health and wellbeing, age, learning needs, and views. For long-term or complex absence, Scotland’s attendance guidance recommends coordinated assessment with relevant partners (Scottish Government guidance, 18 March 2026).
Before the call ends, ask practical first-day questions:

- Who will greet the child, and where should they go when they arrive?
- Who can they speak to if they feel overwhelmed?
- How will teachers handle lessons or assignments missed during the absence?
- What should the family do if the same barrier to attendance comes up again?
2. Prioritize learning instead of trying to do everything
Ask teachers to distinguish essential knowledge and assignments from work that can be skipped, adapted, or completed later. The right priorities depend on the child’s age, curriculum, subjects, and reason for being away; there is no single catch-up schedule or number of hours that fits every pupil.

Support can take different forms. Wales guidance gives examples including extra lesson resources, homework clubs, mentor support, small-group teaching, and one-to-one input (Welsh Government attendance guidance, 2023). Staffordshire County Council also identifies extra help with missed learning as a possible part of a reintegration plan (Staffordshire County Council, “Reintegration after absence”). Agree which support is realistic and who will arrange it.
3. Make the first days back predictable
A return is easier to plan when the child knows what will happen and whom to turn to. Agree with the school who will welcome them, where they can take a break if needed, and how teachers will handle missed work without overwhelming them. At home, practical steps such as returning to familiar routines before school, talking through worries ahead of time, making goodbyes easier, and allowing time to unwind afterwards may help. These suggestions appear in England’s Department for Education parent guidance on attendance (Department for Education, “Communicating with parents about school attendance,” updated 19 August 2026).

4. Consider a gradual return when it fits the child’s needs
A phased return is an option, not a standard requirement. Some children may want to resume their normal routine quickly; others may need a temporary gradual plan. A local authority guide describes both possibilities, and a Department for Education response says schools may consider phased returns and catch-up support after absence (Staffordshire County Council guidance; UK Parliament written answer 41770, 26 March 2025).
If the school and family agree on reduced hours or remote education, set a review date and keep the route back to in-person learning in view. In England, the Department for Education describes remote education as a “last resort” when attendance is not possible, to be considered case by case, with regular review when it supports reintegration (Department for Education, “Providing remote education: guidance for schools,” updated 19 August 2024). Do not assume a child must complete home learning before returning.

5. Address barriers and involve the right support
If illness, disability, mental health, anxiety, or another circumstance is making attendance difficult, discuss possible adjustments and relevant professional support with the school. England’s Department for Education describes a support-first approach and reasonable adjustments for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or mental health needs (UK Parliament written answer 41770, 26 March 2025). For complex needs involving health, safeguarding, disability, or special educational needs, ask the school which local professionals or services should be involved.
In England, local authorities have duties concerning suitable education for certain children who cannot attend school, and national guidance sets out when remote provision may be considered. The rules and available services vary by location; families outside England should check with their own school and education authority rather than assuming England’s arrangements apply. 6. Check in and revise the plan
After the first few days or weeks, ask the child what is working and whether the workload feels manageable. Review attendance barriers and catch-up priorities with the school; adjust the plan if the return is proving too demanding or the support is not addressing the main gaps. There is no established universal timetable for catching up, so use the child’s experience and teachers’ assessment to decide what to change.
