Help your child move the friendships they value off social media before they pause or close an account. Ask what they want to keep, agree on what “quit” means, arrange another way to contact close friends, and check each service’s data and deletion rules before making changes. The goal is to change the child’s relationship with the apps without cutting them off from people who matter.

Start by finding out what your child wants to keep

Social media may be where a child chats with friends, follows an interest, shares creative work, or keeps up with a school or activity group. It may also be a source of stress or take time away from sleep and in-person activities. Avoid assuming that every account has the same role—or that quitting is automatically the right answer for every child.

Ask about each service separately. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests talking with young people about safety, support, enjoyment, challenges, and how they use technology to connect and communicate. Useful questions include:

  • What do you like about this app, and what do you wish you saw less of?
  • Which people or group conversations would you most miss?
  • Are there messages, photos, or other information you want to save?
  • What would make taking a break feel manageable?

Involving the child matters: the AAP advises parents to check in about young people’s online and offline peer relationships and says early adolescents should take part in choosing and putting family media rules into practice. Social media can support connection as well as create risks; its effects depend partly on the child and how they use it. See the AAP’s 5 Cs of Media Use.

Agree on what “quit” means

Quitting does not have to mean permanently deleting every account on the same day. Decide together whether the change is removing an app, taking a defined break, deactivating one account, or deleting accounts. Set a date to review how the new arrangement is working. Family media planning and healthy boundaries are recommended by the AAP and the U.S. Surgeon General, but neither prescribes one required way for every child to quit.

These options can have different consequences for access, messages, groups, and how easily the change can be undone. Their exact effects vary by service, so check that platform’s current official instructions before choosing.

Option What to consider
Remove the app or take a pause The account may remain, but the child is stepping away from using the app. Check whether they can still access the account and its data later, and agree on a clear review date.
Deactivate an account Check the service’s current rules for what happens to the profile, messages, groups, and data, and whether reactivation is possible.
Delete an account Treat this as a potentially permanent change. Before confirming, review the service’s data-download and deletion instructions; do not assume old messages or group membership can be recovered.

Move important friendships to another channel

Before the account change, help your child identify the friends they want to stay in touch with and make a concrete plan with them—and with parents where appropriate. Options might include direct phone calls, a family-approved messaging service, or regular in-person time. A replacement app will not necessarily work for every friend group, so ask how the friends themselves can be reached.

The AAP names iMessage, Messenger Kids, and Kinzoo as examples of messaging alternatives in its guidance for tweens and teens. This is not an endorsement: check each service’s current age rules, privacy practices, availability, and fit for your family. The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) also recommends supporting offline activities and maintaining open communication. Its parent guidance on social media and children notes that social media can have both positive effects, such as staying connected, and negative ones, such as social comparison.

Make plans specific rather than leaving connection to chance: choose a time for a call, arrange a visit or shared activity, or agree on another suitable way to reach one another. That gives friendships a path forward even if the old account is no longer part of the routine.

Can your child keep messages before deleting an account?

Possibly, but do not promise that every message, photo, or group can be saved or restored. Each service has its own account-download, deletion, and message-retention rules. Review those rules with your child before deactivation or deletion, and obtain any available account copy before proceeding.

Snapchat

Snapchat says most Snaps and Chats are automatically deleted by default after they have been opened by all recipients or have expired. Its support instructions for downloading account data recommend using the account portal with the child to request a copy of account data. Snapchat also says the friend list is maintained until the user asks for deletion. These are Snapchat-specific details, not rules for Instagram, TikTok, or other platforms. Check each service’s current official instructions; disappearing content or old direct messages may not be recoverable.

Choose a way to stay reachable that fits

A basic phone may suit a child who mainly needs calls, but it is not a universal solution. A New York City health department caregiver guide suggests considering a flip phone that cannot access social media. It does not compare phone models or guarantee that a particular device will work with group messages.

Before switching devices, check the specific handset’s messaging and group-chat features, whether the local carrier supports it, and how friends can contact the child. Also consider the child’s age, practical needs, and whether the phone actually blocks the social-media access you want to avoid. A basic phone that cannot participate in the child’s essential group conversations may leave the original problem unresolved.

Support the transition and check in again

Plan offline activities the child enjoys and make room for regular time with friends. Keep asking whether they feel included, supported, and comfortable with the change; adjust the plan if a communication gap emerges. The Surgeon General recommends tech-free zones and encouraging in-person friendships, while the CPS advises helping children find offline activities and talking with them if they become anxious about being off their phone.

Social media’s risks and benefits are not the same for every child. Population surveys and studies describe groups, not what one particular child will experience. For context, the Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory page reports that up to 95% of U.S. young people ages 13–17 use a social media platform and that more than three hours a day was associated in a cited study with double the risk of some mental-health problems, including depression and anxiety symptoms. That association does not prove that social media alone caused those problems. The advisory summarizes its conclusion this way: “We cannot conclude that social media is sufficiently safe for children and adolescents.” Read the U.S. Surgeon General’s social media and youth mental health advisory in context rather than treating its population-level figures as a prediction for an individual child.

If online experiences are causing serious distress or your child is being negatively affected, involve a trusted adult or qualified professional. In the United States, the Surgeon General’s page advises calling or texting 988 for a mental-health crisis. General media guidance is not a substitute for advice from your child’s pediatrician; the AAP says its parent resources do not replace individualized pediatric care.
