One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo make Linux kernel heap-corruption exploits harder, verify that hardened usercopy checks and memory initialization are available and enabled, keep kernel pointer hashing on, and consider KFENCE when sampled bug detection fits your workload. These settings add layers of hardening or detection; they do not fix the underlying memory-safety flaw or guarantee that exploitation is impossible. Defaults and support vary by kernel build, architecture, and distribution, so check the running system rather than assuming a setting is active.
What kernel settings can—and cannot—do
Heap-corruption defenses work in layers. Some controls check operations or reduce useful information exposure; others make stale memory contents less useful or detect certain bugs. KFENCE is a detector, not a general-purpose prevention mechanism. None of these settings replaces fixing the vulnerable code or updating to a maintained kernel.
The upstream documentation explains how the controls work, but does not establish a universally best production profile or workload-specific performance cost. Choose settings against the actual kernel, workload, and availability requirements.
Check hardened usercopy
When CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY is available, hardened usercopy checks allocation boundaries for kernel data copied through copy_to_user() and copy_from_user(). The hardened_usercopy= boot parameter controls whether checks are enabled for that boot; the default depends on CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY_DEFAULT_ON. See the kernel command-line parameter reference.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the deployed kernel configuration for
CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPYand its default-on option. - Inspect the boot command line for an explicit
hardened_usercopy=value. - Keep the checks enabled on production systems unless there is a documented reason to change them.
Zero allocated and freed memory
The kernel supports init_on_alloc=1 to zero newly allocated pages and heap objects, and init_on_free=1 to zero freed pages and heap objects. Their defaults are controlled by CONFIG_INIT_ON_ALLOC_DEFAULT_ON and CONFIG_INIT_ON_FREE_DEFAULT_ON, respectively. The kernel command-line reference documents these parameters.
Zeroing can limit exposure or reuse of stale contents, but it does not prevent every overwrite or use-after-free. Confirm that the running kernel supports the settings and assess their effect on the target workload before broad deployment.

Use KFENCE for sampled heap-error detection
KFENCE is a low-overhead, sampling-based memory-safety error detector, as the Linux kernel KFENCE documentation describes it. It can detect heap out-of-bounds accesses, use-after-free errors, and invalid frees. Because it guards sampled allocations rather than every allocation, a lack of reports does not show that the kernel is free of bugs.
Enable and configure sampling
Build the kernel with CONFIG_KFENCE=y. KFENCE can also be compiled in with sampling disabled by default using CONFIG_KFENCE_SAMPLE_INTERVAL=0, then enabled at boot with a nonzero kfence.sample_interval. Setting kfence.sample_interval=0 disables sampling. By default, KFENCE samples one allocation per interval; kfence.burst=N requests additional successive allocations.

Account for its pool and reporting behavior
The documented default for CONFIG_KFENCE_NUM_OBJECTS is 255. The KFENCE documentation gives the pool calculation as (objects + 1) * 2 * PAGE_SIZE; with 255 objects and 4 KiB pages, that works out to 2 MiB. These are configuration figures, not measures of security effectiveness.
KFENCE uses a deferrable timer to avoid CPU wake-ups on idle systems, which makes sample intervals less predictable. On detection, kfence.fault=report, oops, or panic controls the response; the documented default is to report and continue. Choose deliberately: escalating an error response can affect system availability.

Reduce kernel address and memory-content exposure
Kernel addresses and memory contents can reveal layout information or secrets. The kernel self-protection documentation advises against using kernel addresses as userspace identifiers, recommends fully initializing memory copied to userspace, and describes poisoning released memory as a way to frustrate reuse and content-exposure attacks. Restrict access to interfaces that expose raw addresses.
Keep pointer hashing enabled on production kernels. The hash_pointers= parameter accepts auto (the default), always, or never. The command-line documentation says never disables hashing and should be used only for kernel debugging, not production. Hashing can make debugging harder, so use controlled debugging environments when raw pointer values are necessary.

Keep userspace ASLR separate from kernel heap hardening
randomize_va_space=2 additionally randomizes the userspace heap. This is process address-space randomization, not a kernel heap-protection setting. The kernel sysctl documentation notes that CONFIG_COMPAT_BRK excludes the userspace heap from process address-space randomization for compatibility with old binaries. See Documentation for /proc/sys/kernel/.
Verify the deployed kernel before rollout
Settings can be absent, configured differently, or defaulted differently across kernel releases, architectures, distribution builds, and vendor patches. Validate the actual configuration and boot parameters, then test behavior against the workload and availability needs before applying a profile across a fleet. The upstream documentation does not provide a universal benchmark or prove one profile is optimal for all systems.
For broader context on defense in depth, see the Linux kernel project’s Kernel Self-Protection documentation, version 4.15, and the current Kernel Self-Protection documentation.
