To handle a web element in Selenium with Python, locate it in the active page or frame, wait for the state your next action requires, perform the appropriate interaction, and verify the result. Use find_element() for one match, find_elements() for a collection, and explicit waits for content that loads dynamically.

Find an element with a locator

Selenium searches the current browsing context—the active page or frame. Choose a locator that is both stable and specific in the page you are automating. Common choices include ID, name, CSS selector, and XPath; no strategy is universally best. Selenium’s locator guide describes the available approaches and how to locate elements: Selenium element locators.

  • find_element(By.ID, "message") returns the first matching element and raises an exception if none is found.
  • find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".result") returns all matches as a list; if there are no matches, the list is empty.

A class may appear on many elements. If a locator matches repeated items, narrow the search to a known parent component or inspect text and attributes to identify the intended item.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By

first_result = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".result")
all_results = driver.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".result")
for result in all_results:
    print(result.text)

Interact with the element and verify the result

Use an action that fits the control: click() for a pointer interaction, send_keys() for a keyboard-interactable element such as a text input, and clear() for an editable control that supports clearing. To select options in a native HTML select element, Selenium provides the Select support class; follow its documented usage rather than treating every dropdown as a text field. See Selenium element interactions.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For forms, click the applicable submit button. Selenium’s interaction guidance recommends this over using submit(). After acting, locate and inspect the expected outcome rather than assuming the click succeeded. The following pattern comes from Selenium’s official first-script example:

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By

text_box = driver.find_element(By.NAME, "my-text")
submit_button = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button")
text_box.send_keys("Selenium")
submit_button.click()
message = driver.find_element(By.ID, "message")
print(message.text)

Use .text for rendered text and get_attribute("value") when you need the value stored in a form control. State checks such as is_displayed() and is_enabled() can help diagnose whether an element is displayed or enabled. Selenium notes that its displayed-state calculation is an approximation, not a perfect measure of whether a person can see or use an element in every situation: Selenium element information.

Wait for the condition you need

A navigation reaching its configured document readiness state does not ensure that JavaScript-created content is ready. Fixed sleeps can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Prefer an explicit wait for the condition required by the next action—such as presence, visibility, or clickability. Selenium explains these race conditions and documents implicit and explicit waits in its waits guide.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC

button = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
    EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.ID, "continue"))
)
button.click()

The example waits up to 10 seconds for the condition; it does not guarantee the page will become ready. Selenium warns against mixing implicit and explicit waits because the resulting total wait time can be unpredictable. Pick a wait strategy deliberately, and use explicit waits when the condition is specific to a particular interaction.

Search inside frames and new windows

Switch into an iframe

Searching the main page will not find an element inside an iframe. Locate the frame, switch into it, then search for its contents. When finished, return to the main document with driver.switch_to.default_content(). Selenium supports switching by a frame element, name or ID, or index; see Selenium frames.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By

frame = driver.find_element(By.ID, "payment-frame")
driver.switch_to.frame(frame)
card_field = driver.find_element(By.NAME, "card-number")
card_field.send_keys("4242424242424242")
driver.switch_to.default_content()

Replace the example frame and field locators with those in your page. If a lookup fails, confirm you switched to the correct frame before searching.

Switch to a new tab or window

Each tab or window has a handle. Save the original handle, wait until the expected number of handles is available, switch to the new handle, and switch back after closing the new window. Selenium’s Python example demonstrates this workflow: Selenium windows and tabs.

from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait

original_handle = driver.current_window_handle
# Perform an action that opens a new tab or window.
WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(lambda d: len(d.window_handles) == 2)
new_handle = next(handle for handle in driver.window_handles
                  if handle != original_handle)
driver.switch_to.window(new_handle)

# Interact with the new tab or window here.
driver.close()
driver.switch_to.window(original_handle)

The opening action is page-specific. If more than two windows are expected, adjust the handle-count condition to match the behavior being tested.

Troubleshoot common element errors

  • No such element: Confirm the locator matches the intended element and that the content has loaded. If it is inside an iframe, switch into that frame first; if it is in another tab, switch to that window.
  • Element is not clickable or the click is intercepted: Check whether the element is displayed and enabled, wait for clickability, and look for an overlay covering its center. Selenium clicks the element’s center and may scroll it into view; an overlay at the click point can intercept the action.
  • Typing has no effect: Make sure the target is keyboard-interactable, such as an input or content-editable element, and that the locator identifies the intended control.
  • The result is missing after a click: Do not assume the click completed the application’s asynchronous work. Wait for the result condition, then locate and inspect it.

Prefer correcting the locator, browsing context, or wait condition to adding a workaround. A JavaScript click can bypass the user-like interaction checks Selenium applies, so it is not a universal fix. Selenium’s interaction model is documented at element interactions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between find_element() and find_elements() in Selenium?

find_element() returns the first matching element; find_elements() returns a list of matches and returns an empty list if nothing matches.

Does Selenium wait for JavaScript content after a page loads?

A navigation reaching its configured ready state does not guarantee that JavaScript-created content is ready. Wait for the specific condition your next action requires.
