Puppeteer’s “Connection closed. Most likely the page has been closed.” error means a command was sent after its underlying browser-control connection had closed. The message identifies a connection state, not the reason it closed. Find out whether the page or session ended, Puppeteer detached, or the browser process or transport stopped before changing timeouts or retrying.
What the error means—and what it does not
Puppeteer’s error reference describes “Connection closed. Most likely the page has been closed.” as a command sent after the underlying connection closed (Puppeteer error reference). The current CDP connection implementation rejects sends after its closed flag is set (CDP connection implementation). That tells you why the command failed, but not what initiated the closure.
Distinguish a page or target ending from the browser-level connection ending. Related messages include “Page closed,” “PipeTransport is closed,” “Protocol error ({value}): Session closed. Most likely the page has been closed,” and “Session already detached. Most likely the {value} has been closed.” They describe related lifecycle states, but are not interchangeable diagnoses.
Trace the failure before changing code
- Record the failed operation. Note the exact error, stack trace, and whether it came from navigation such as
page.goto(), a wait, evaluation, screenshot or PDF capture, or a direct CDP session call. The failed command may occur after the event that actually closed the connection. - Identify the scope. Determine whether only a page, target, or session ended, or whether the browser connection or transport closed. A page-scoped failure and a browser-level disconnect call for different recovery steps.
- Check lifecycle ownership. Search the code path and cleanup handlers for
page.close(), browser-context closure,browser.close(), andbrowser.disconnect(). Check whether a background task continues issuing commands after teardown, or whether cleanup runs earlier than expected. - Collect browser-process output. Launch with
dumpio: trueto forward browser logs to the Node.js process’s standard streams. This can help reveal a browser crash or launch failure. - Log protocol activity and pending calls. Run Node.js with
NODE_DEBUG="puppeteer:*"to log DevTools protocol traffic. Inspectbrowser.debugInfo.pendingProtocolErrors; Puppeteer documents these pending-call stack traces as a way to identify code that triggered protocol calls. - Reproduce in a visible browser if needed. Set
headless: falseto see what the browser displays while the failure occurs.
These debugging approaches are documented in Puppeteer’s debugging guide and Browser API. The Browser API page displayed version 25.12.0 on October 3, 2026; verify behavior against the documentation for the version you use, especially after upgrades.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix the lifecycle problem, not just the symptom
Prevent commands after teardown
Make the owner of each page and browser explicit. Await work that uses a page before closing it, and ensure cleanup does not race with navigation, evaluation, or capture. If one task closes a page while another still uses it, coordinate those tasks or stop the later commands when shutdown begins.
Understand close versus disconnect
browser.close() closes the browser and its associated pages. browser.disconnect() detaches Puppeteer while leaving the browser process running. These methods are not substitutes; use the one that matches who should own the browser’s continued lifetime. See Puppeteer’s Browser API.

Reconnect only to a live browser
Puppeteer documents saving browser.wsEndpoint(), disconnecting, then reconnecting with puppeteer.connect({ browserWSEndpoint }). This is useful only if the browser process is still running and its endpoint is available. It cannot revive a browser that has exited.
When a retry or timeout change helps
A timeout controls how long an operation waits; it does not reopen a closed connection. Increase a timeout only when evidence points to an operation taking longer than its configured limit, not as a response to a confirmed closed transport.

Retry only after addressing the lifecycle cause and confirming the browser is usable. Retries can be appropriate for a safe, repeatable operation, but repeating work blindly can mask a race or duplicate side effects. If the browser has exited, launch a new browser rather than trying to reconnect to the old process.
Common symptoms and next steps
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
The error follows page.close() or context cleanup |
Whether another asynchronous task still uses that page or its session | Await or cancel that work before teardown; do not send further commands to the closed target. |
The error follows browser.close() |
Whether code continues using pages after closing the browser | Reorder shutdown so page work finishes before the browser is closed. |
| Puppeteer reports a disconnect unexpectedly | Browser-process output, protocol logs, and pending-call stacks | Use dumpio: true, NODE_DEBUG="puppeteer:*", and browser.debugInfo.pendingProtocolErrors to find where the connection ended. |
| The browser is still running after Puppeteer detaches | Whether you intentionally called browser.disconnect() and retained the endpoint |
Reconnect with the saved endpoint if it remains available. |
| The browser process has exited | Browser logs and the code that launched or managed the process | Resolve the process failure and launch a new browser; reconnecting cannot restore an exited process. |
| The failure is intermittent or timing-sensitive | Visible browser behavior and the order of concurrent tasks | Reproduce with headless: false and inspect protocol traffic before changing waits or retry policy. |

If your goal is to capture a website rather than control a browser session, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. ScreenshotNeo provides MCP tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
