There is no single safe-handling recipe for every nanoparticle. Identify the material and task, prevent release where possible, capture any release that cannot be prevented, and use hygiene, cleanup procedures, and task-appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to address what remains. OSHA notes that engineered nanomaterial toxicity depends on material-specific physical and chemical properties, and that potential health effects are not fully understood.

Start with the material and the task

“Nanoparticle” is not a complete hazard description. NIOSH defines engineered nanomaterials as materials with at least one primary dimension below 100 nanometers; that size description alone does not determine how a material behaves or what controls it needs.

Before work begins, identify the substance and consider its particle-size distribution, agglomeration, shape, crystal structure, surface area and chemistry, surface charge, and porosity. Then map the process: the form handled, quantity, duration and frequency of work, and the points at which material could become airborne or contact a worker. OSHA’s guidance calls for considering the physical state, exposure routes, sampling methods, exposure amount and duration, and whether existing controls are adequate.

Look at the form the material takes

Assess whether the material is a dry powder or dust, spray, droplets, slurry, suspension, solution, or embedded in a solid matrix. Easily dispersed dry material merits particular caution because inhalation may be a concern. Material embedded in a solid or suspended in liquid generally presents different exposure considerations; that does not make it automatically harmless, especially if a task can release particles.

Map the routes and moments of exposure

Consider inhalation, skin contact, ingestion from contaminated hands or surfaces, and relevant eye or mucous-membrane contact. Identify transfers, weighing, mixing, pouring, sampling, equipment cleaning, maintenance, and waste handling as possible release or contact points. The relevant controls depend on the task and the material, not just the product label.

Choose controls in order: prevent release, then capture it

The strongest starting point is to keep free particles from escaping into the work area. OSHA recommends avoiding open-air handling of free-particle nanomaterials, using tightly sealed containers where possible, and carrying out work that could generate engineered nanoparticles in an enclosure operating at negative pressure relative to the workers’ breathing zone.

Lightweight construction and soft sealing materials make it suitable for extended use in workshops, construction sites and DIY projects
Control approach Role When it fits Residual considerations
Sealed containers and closed handling Prevents dispersal during storage, transfer, or handling. Use where the process and material can remain contained. Plan for transfers, opening, cleaning, and disposal, where exposure may still occur.
Enclosure or ventilated process equipment Contains release at the work process. Use a suitable ventilated enclosure, such as a glove box, laboratory hood, or process chamber fitted with HEPA filters. Confirm the enclosure is appropriate and functioning for the task; plan safe procedures for maintenance and waste.
Local exhaust ventilation Captures material close to the point of release. Use when full enclosure is impracticable and the exhaust can be designed to capture the release at source. It does not eliminate the need to assess remaining exposure, housekeeping, and PPE.
Hygiene and planned cleanup Limits secondary spread from contaminated surfaces, tools, and clothing. Use alongside containment and ventilation as part of the work plan. Specify approved cleanup methods and procedures before a spill or contamination event.
PPE, including respirators when indicated Provides supplementary protection against residual exposure. Select based on the hazard evaluation and applicable respiratory-protection requirements. PPE does not replace source enclosure or local exhaust.

OSHA and NIOSH guidance emphasizes exposure assessment and engineering controls, rather than one universally correct device. Choose controls for the material, process, amount, facility, and applicable jurisdiction.

Plan housekeeping, spills, and PPE before work

Prevent secondary spread

Set hygiene practices and surface-decontamination procedures for the work area. For contaminated dust, OSHA describes wet wiping or HEPA-filtered vacuuming rather than dry sweeping or using compressed air, which can disperse material. Establish how contaminated wipes, vacuum contents, and other waste will be contained and handled under applicable procedures.

Prepare a spill response

Decide in advance who responds, what cleanup method is suitable for the material and quantity, what protective equipment is needed, and how cleanup waste is contained. Do not improvise a response that could spread particles or expose unprotected workers. Follow the facility’s chemical hygiene and emergency procedures.

Select PPE through a hazard evaluation

Choose gloves, eye protection, protective clothing, and respiratory protection according to the exposure assessment and task. OSHA identifies N100, R100, and P100 as NIOSH particulate filter classes, but a filter class alone does not establish that a particular respirator is suitable for a specific exposure. Respirator selection and use must follow the applicable respiratory-protection requirements; a respirator supplements, rather than replaces, engineering controls.

Use exposure limits only for the materials they cover

Exposure values are material- and context-specific, not universal limits for “nanoparticles.” OSHA’s April 2013 worker fact sheet reports NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limits of 1.0 microgram per cubic meter as an 8-hour time-weighted average for respirable carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers, and 0.3 milligrams per cubic meter for nanoscale titanium dioxide compared with 2.4 milligrams per cubic meter for fine-sized titanium dioxide. These figures apply to the named materials and distinctions; do not apply them to other nanomaterials as general safe thresholds.

OSHA cautions that nanoparticle risks are not fully known and recommends consulting trusted, current sources. Its laboratory recommendations and NIOSH’s laboratory guidance should be used alongside established laboratory practices and the facility’s chemical hygiene plan. The cited guidance is U.S.-focused; requirements may differ elsewhere.
