When finished, close the child context if appropriate and explicitly switch back to the saved handle. Selenium does not automatically direct commands to a tab just because the browser appears to have focused it.
How Selenium identifies tabs and windows
WebDriver uses a window handle to identify each open browsing context. Tabs and separate browser windows use the same handle-based workflow: getWindowHandle() returns the handle for the currently selected context, and getWindowHandles() returns the handles for all open contexts. To direct subsequent commands to a particular context, pass its handle to driver.switchTo().window(handle). See the Selenium guide to working with windows and tabs, the Java API reference for getWindowHandles(), and the TargetLocator.window() reference.
A click that opens another tab does not itself switch WebDriver to it. The browser may visually focus the new context while Selenium continues to issue commands to the one it previously selected. Make the switch explicit.
Switch to a window opened by the application
Save the pre-action handles, wait for the handle set to grow, and choose the new handle by set difference rather than by assuming the popup is first or last. This pattern also works when the test starts with more than one tab.

The example’s 10-second wait is illustrative, not a universal timeout recommendation. Adjust it to the application and test environment. The Java WebDriverWait API reference documents the explicit-wait abstraction; check the Selenium Java version in your project when matching constructors and dependencies.
Why compare against the full pre-action set?
If the test begins with several contexts, saving only the current handle is not enough to distinguish a newly opened context from another one that was already open. Comparing the returned set with handlesBefore identifies handles added by the action. When the test starts with exactly one context and the action is known to create exactly one more, comparing with that single original handle can work too; retaining the full set makes the pattern more general.

When more than one new context appears
Do not choose an arbitrary new handle if an action can open several pages. Iterate through handles not present in the saved set, switch to each candidate, and inspect a meaningful property such as its title or URL to identify the intended page. Selenium’s guide recommends looping over handles when more than two windows or tabs are involved.
Create a tab or window from test code
If the test—not the application—needs to create a fresh context, Selenium 4 and later provide newWindow. The call creates and selects the requested context directly:

driver.switchTo().newWindow(WindowType.WINDOW);Use one call for the context you need; the second line is an alternative, not a step to run after the first if you want only one new context. This direct-creation method is different from handling a popup opened by the application, where waiting for and discovering the new handle remains appropriate. Close a child context and return to the parent
driver.close() closes only the currently selected tab or window. Save the parent handle before switching, close the child when the test is done with it, then switch to the parent before issuing more commands. Selenium warns that remaining on a closed context can trigger a No Such Window Exception.

Use driver.quit() when the test is finished with the entire WebDriver session; it ends the session and closes its windows. Do not close the only remaining context and expect to continue using that session.
Choose the right approach for the situation

Troubleshoot common window-handling failures
- No new handle immediately after the click: the application may not have opened the context yet. Wait for the handle count to increase before searching for the new one.
- The test switched to the wrong page: handle order is not a dependable way to identify a popup. Compare against the saved pre-action set, then verify the candidate by title or URL if multiple contexts were added.
- Commands still affect the original tab: browser focus and WebDriver’s selected context are not the same thing. Call
switchTo().window(newHandle)explicitly. No Such Window Exceptionafter closing a tab: WebDriver is still associated with the context that was closed. Switch to a handle that remains open before continuing.- Several popups opened: inspect each newly added handle and select the intended context using a page property, rather than choosing the first candidate.
- Unclear whether the new page is a tab or a separate window: for WebDriver handle operations, both are browsing contexts handled through the same API.
