Keep inventory authoritative in your commerce backend, then make the static storefront show the latest purchase status it can obtain. A page generated at build time can become stale after a sale or restock, so its stock label should not be treated as a live guarantee. Decide what shoppers should see and be able to do when stock runs out, and keep product pages, variants, cart, checkout, feeds, and structured availability consistent with that policy.
First, clarify what “static store” means
A catalog-only static site may display products without handling transactions. A static or headless storefront, by contrast, has an independently built front end connected to a commerce backend for product data and purchasing. Shopify describes this separation and its custom storefront approach in its headless commerce overview; its Storefront API reference covers product and collection display as well as cart and checkout operations.
This distinction matters for inventory: rendering a page as static does not require every commerce decision to be static. The backend should remain the authority for whether an item can be bought. A pre-rendered label may be old by the time someone visits, so either refresh the generated output or obtain a suitably current availability signal when the shopper is deciding to purchase.

Track inventory in the commerce system where orders are accepted, rather than maintaining an unrelated stock count in the front end. Shopify says inventory tracking keeps track of each product’s inventory level; WooCommerce documents quantity management, stock status, and thresholds in its inventory settings guide.

On-hand quantity is not always the same as sellable availability. Decide whether the storefront is reporting physical stock, quantity available to sell, pickup availability at a selected location, or an intentional preorder/backorder policy. Shopify’s StoreAvailability documentation describes cases where a variant may be available for pickup through transfers or oversell rules even when quantityAvailable is zero. Label the status according to what it actually promises; a zero count alone may not describe every fulfillment option.
Choose what happens when stock reaches zero
There is no single correct policy for every product. Select one based on whether the item will return, whether customers need its product information, and whether you can make a reliable fulfillment promise.

Compare policies by stock accuracy, oversell risk, clarity of the fulfillment promise, ability to capture restock interest, variant or location complexity, and implementation effort. These are practical decision criteria, not measured performance results.

Shopify
Shopify treats tracked inventory at zero or below as out of stock and blocks purchase by default. Merchants can opt to continue selling at zero, for example when accepting preorders or selling incoming stock; see Selling out of stock products. Shopify also documents filtering zero-stock products out of collections in Hiding out of stock products. These controls address collection visibility and purchase behavior separately, so verify both rather than assuming that hiding a product also defines what checkout will allow.

WooCommerce
WooCommerce offers product-level stock management, stock status, low-stock thresholds, backorder options, and a catalog setting to hide out-of-stock products in its inventory documentation. Hiding a product from the catalog is not the same as setting its purchasing status; check both the catalog display and the product’s stock/backorder settings.
WooCommerce variation visibility has additional conditions: hiding out-of-stock variations depends on catalog hiding being enabled, stock being managed for the variation, the variation being out of stock, and backorders being disabled. The relevant behavior is documented in Variable Products. Do not infer a whole product’s availability from its default size or color when buyers can select other variations.

For restock notices, WooCommerce’s Product Notifications documentation describes a flow that requires the sold-out product page to remain visible. That makes the visible-page policy a functional requirement for this approach, not merely a presentation preference.

Can customers preorder an out-of-stock item?
Yes, if the backend permits selling beyond current stock and the storefront explains the arrangement accurately. Shopify supports continued selling at zero inventory. WooCommerce documents a preorder extension, including stock decrement behavior, in its Pre-Orders documentation. These controls do not remove the need to state fulfillment expectations: use a date only when you can support it, and do not label a preorder as ordinary in-stock availability.

How should a static storefront keep stock information fresh?
Static builds can make API requests while generating pages; Shopify’s Storefront API reference discusses requests made during a static-site build. That establishes that build-time product data is possible, but it does not prescribe a universal regeneration interval or cache strategy. Choose a refresh method supported by your framework and commerce platform, such as a suitably fresh query, a short-lived cache, webhook-triggered regeneration, or another documented mechanism. Pin a supported API version and check current version support when implementing; the reference identified version 2026-10 as latest at the time of its October 4, 2026 review.
- Identify the architecture. Determine whether the site is only a static catalog or a static/headless front end connected to a backend that handles commerce.
- Set the source of truth. Enable inventory tracking where appropriate and specify whether the displayed state means physical quantity, sellable quantity, location-specific pickup, or intentional overselling.
- Choose the zero-stock policy. For each product type, block purchases and show sold out, hide it from listings, accept a preorder/backorder with clear terms, or offer a restock notification.
- Refresh the storefront appropriately. Use a refresh or query approach supported by the actual framework and platform; do not assume a build-time snapshot stays current.
- Check every buyer-facing representation. Review collection cards, product details, variant selectors, add-to-cart, checkout, feeds, and structured availability after stock changes.
How should variants and locations affect the status?
Resolve availability for the option and fulfillment location the shopper selects. A product may have one unavailable size and several available ones; a single default variant should not determine the status of every option. Likewise, pickup availability at one store may not match another location or the overall sellable quantity. Where the platform exposes location-specific availability, make the storefront’s wording clear about which location or fulfillment method it describes.
Keep structured availability aligned with the storefront
Structured product data should not claim an item is available when the page and checkout say it is sold out, or vice versa. Shopify’s schema guide lists availability values including InStock, OutOfStock, PreOrder, BackOrder, and Discontinued, and warns against mismatch with inventory: Product schema markup. Choose the value that matches the actual offer and visible customer experience. Search-engine eligibility and detailed markup requirements can change, so check the relevant search engine’s current documentation before relying on a particular result feature.
