Playwright is not a supported way to solve Cloudflare challenges on production websites. Cloudflare says browser automation frameworks, including Playwright, are not supported for that purpose. If you are testing an app you control, use Turnstile’s test keys; if you are automating your own Cloudflare-protected site, use an authorized workflow and configure access on the server side. If you are a visitor stuck in a challenge, troubleshoot your regular browser or contact the site owner rather than trying to evade the check.
First identify what “Cloudflare with Playwright” means
The right response depends on whether you are testing an integration, automating a site you own, or trying to access a third-party production site. Those are different cases, and a Cloudflare challenge is not necessarily a CAPTCHA.
- Testing Turnstile in your own application: use Cloudflare’s documented Turnstile test keys in a test environment, not a production challenge or a method for bypassing it. Cloudflare’s supported-browser guidance points automated Turnstile tests to test keys: Supported browsers.
- Automating a site or Cloudflare zone you control: use an authorized test workflow, such as Cloudflare Browser Run where appropriate, and make any necessary access decisions in your zone’s server-side rules.
- Accessing a third-party site that presents a production challenge: Playwright is not a supported challenge-solving tool. Use the site normally or ask its owner for an authorized access or test route.
Cloudflare’s Supported browsers page states: “Browser automation frameworks, such as Selenium, Puppeteer, Playwright, and Cypress, are not supported for solving production challenges.” This is a limitation on solving production challenges, not a claim that Playwright cannot be used for authorized testing.
Identify which Cloudflare feature is involved
Cloudflare challenges can be triggered by different products and rules, so treating every challenge response as the same CAPTCHA leads to the wrong fix. A challenge may come from WAF custom rules, rate-limiting or IP-access rules, Bot Management, Bot Fight Mode or Super Bot Fight Mode, Turnstile, HTTP DDoS protection, or Under Attack Mode. Challenge Page
A Challenge Page interrupts navigation while Cloudflare evaluates the request. It can be issued by a security rule or protection feature. The site owner needs to inspect the relevant Cloudflare rule or event to determine why it was issued.
Turnstile widget
Turnstile is an embedded challenge mechanism used by a site as part of its own page or form. For integration tests, configure Cloudflare’s test keys for the test environment. Do not make a production challenge the test fixture or attempt to automate its solution.
JavaScript Detections
JavaScript Detections is a signal that can inform Bot Management decisions; it does not pause the visitor with an interactive challenge. Cloudflare says its detection code is injected on HTML requests, not AJAX calls, and at least one HTML request must occur before the signal is available. Other security actions
A block, rate limit, or other configured action may resemble a challenge-related failure from the perspective of a test. Check the response and the zone’s security events or rule configuration rather than assuming a particular Playwright setting is responsible.
Test a Turnstile integration you control
Keep automated tests on a test configuration. Set the application’s Turnstile site key and secret to Cloudflare’s test keys in the environment used by the test; use the values and behavior documented by Cloudflare rather than production credentials. The test should verify your application’s integration—such as form rendering and the server-side handling of the test result—not attempt to solve a production widget.
- Configure test credentials. Set the test site key in the page or application configuration and the corresponding test secret in the server-side test environment.
- Run the app in its test environment. Keep production secrets out of local fixtures, CI logs, and browser code.
- Exercise the flow with Playwright. Assert the form and your app’s expected success or failure behavior. Let the documented test keys provide the test outcome.
- Keep a separate production check. Do not substitute test credentials in a live deployment; validate production configuration through an authorized release or operational check.
A minimal Playwright Test smoke test can confirm that your own test page loads and exposes the form. Set TEST_URL to the local or test deployment URL before running it:

Automate a site you own behind Cloudflare
For Cloudflare’s own browser automation environment, its Browser Run documentation provides the Cloudflare-maintained @cloudflare/playwright integration. Follow the current setup in Playwright (Browser Run); the documented requirements are version-sensitive.

Use this integration only for authorized browser automation. It is not a supported way to defeat another site’s Cloudflare protections. For a site you own, make required testing access explicit in the site’s Cloudflare configuration rather than relying on user-agent changes or browser fingerprint tricks.

If you own the Cloudflare zone, configure the rule deliberately
When JavaScript Detections is part of your Bot Management configuration, do not treat its signal as available on a visitor’s very first request. Cloudflare says the script is injected on HTML requests, not AJAX calls; an HTML request must occur before the signal can be used. The documentation describes a 15-minute lifespan, with the code injected again before the session expires.
Cloudflare documents the field cf.bot_management.js_detection.passed for custom-rule enforcement and recommends a Managed Challenge action in the described scenario, because legitimate visitors may not have received detection for network or browser reasons. Do not apply the field indiscriminately to first requests, APIs, native-app endpoints, or WebSockets. The documented custom-rule procedure requires an Enterprise Bot Management subscription; check the product and plan prerequisites in Cloudflare’s JavaScript Detections documentation.
Cloudflare describes multiple bot-detection engines: request heuristics, JavaScript Detections, and a machine-learning engine available on Business and Enterprise plans. That machine-learning engine maps a predicted probability to a Bot Score from 1–99. These are distinct signals; there is no single Playwright user-agent string or option guaranteed to change a security decision. See Bot detection engines.

Why a legitimate visitor can get stuck in a challenge
If you are a visitor rather than the site operator, diagnose the ordinary browser environment instead of trying to make Playwright imitate a person. Cloudflare’s supported-browser guidance recommends using a supported, current browser and notes that extensions, browser settings, and network conditions can affect a challenge.
- Update the browser and retry in a standard browser session.
- Temporarily investigate extensions that block challenge scripts or change user-agent, Canvas, or WebGL behavior.
- While diagnosing, remove developer-tool overrides for network conditions, user agent, viewport, or JavaScript.
- Check whether a VPN or proxy changes the client IP during the challenge. Cloudflare warns that a solve request from a different IP can be invalid and cause a challenge loop.
- If the issue persists, give the site owner the page URL, approximate time, and any displayed error or Ray ID so they can investigate their own Cloudflare configuration.

Does a custom user agent make Playwright acceptable for solving a Cloudflare production challenge?
No. Cloudflare says automation frameworks are not supported for solving production challenges, and its Browser Run requests are identified as bots even when a custom user agent is set.
Is JavaScript Detections itself a CAPTCHA?
No. It is a signal used in security decisions; unlike an interactive Challenge Page, it does not pause the visitor.
