To handle browser tabs in Selenium, save the current window handle, wait for the new tab or window to appear, find its handle, and switch to it. WebDriver uses the same handle-based workflow for tabs and windows; as Selenium’s guide puts it, “WebDriver does not make the distinction between windows and tabs.”
How Selenium identifies tabs and windows
Each open browser context has a window handle. Use driver.current_window_handle to get the current one and driver.window_handles to get the handles for all open contexts. A tab opening visually or receiving operating-system focus does not switch WebDriver’s active context. Call driver.switch_to.window(handle) before finding elements or reading page properties in another tab.
The examples below use Python. Selenium’s official guide also has examples for other language bindings, but their method names and asynchronous syntax differ; do not mix those examples with Python code. See Selenium: Working with windows and tabs.
Switch to a tab opened by a click
Save the original handle before clicking, wait for the expected number of open contexts, then find the handle that was not present before. This avoids relying on a fixed list position.

- Import the Selenium helpers and set up an explicit wait. The example assumes
driveris an existing WebDriver session. - Save the current handle, click the link, and wait for the count to change. Use the count appropriate for your starting state.
- Find and select the new handle. Then wait for a page-specific condition before proceeding.

If the action may open more than one, waiting for a single additional context is not enough: determine which new handle belongs to the intended page, for example by switching to candidates and checking their titles. Do not assume that the new tab is always at index 1.
Create a new tab or window directly
When the test needs a blank context rather than a site link’s destination, Selenium 4 and later provide new_window. The command creates the requested context and automatically switches WebDriver to it.

Close a tab and return to the original
driver.close() closes the current tab or window; it does not restore another context automatically. After closing, explicitly switch to a handle that is still open:

driver.close()
driver.switch_to.window(original_handle)Keep track of which handles remain valid if the test closes more than one context. Use driver.quit() to end the WebDriver session and close all its windows, not merely to close the current tab. Switching to a closed handle or continuing to issue commands while the driver is on a closed context can raise a No Such Window Exception.
Common problems and fixes
- The click succeeds, but Selenium still finds elements on the original page: the active WebDriver context has not changed. Switch to the new handle before locating elements or reading the title.
- The wait for a new context times out: confirm the click actually opens a tab or window and set the expected count based on the existing handles. Wait for a handle-count change before looking for the new handle.
- The test switches to the wrong tab: avoid selecting a hard-coded list index. Compare the handle set before and after the action; if several contexts opened, identify the intended page using a property such as its title.
- A No Such Window Exception appears after closing a tab: the driver may still be associated with the closed context. Switch to a remaining open handle before the next WebDriver command.
- The new-window command is unavailable: check the Selenium binding and version in use. The documented direct-creation API is for Selenium 4 and later; use the click-and-wait approach when supporting a binding without it.
