If an authorized browser automation run stops at a bot check or CAPTCHA, first identify which protection issued it and whether you control the site. For your own integration, test with the provider’s documented test mode and test keys; for a third-party production site, use an approved API or ask the owner for an automation route. Do not treat production challenges as something a browser framework should defeat.
Why browser automation gets stopped
“CAPTCHA” is often used as a catch-all for any interruption, but the screen may be an interstitial challenge, an embedded widget, a JavaScript detection, or another access-control rule. The right response depends on which product and rule produced it. Cloudflare, for example, documents multiple challenge types delivered through different products; identifying the protection surface is a better first step than changing browser settings at random. Cloudflare challenge types
Bot detection is layered rather than a single browser flag. Cloudflare documents heuristic checks, JavaScript detections, and machine-learning analysis. Depending on the customer’s plan, analysis can use request headers, session characteristics, and browser signals. Its machine-learning engine maps the predicted probability that a client is human to a bot score from 1 to 99. That describes Cloudflare’s system, not a universal scoring scheme used by every provider. Cloudflare bot detection engines
As a result, a normal-looking browser window, a different automation framework, or a hosted browser is not a reliable remedy for a production challenge. A challenge is an access-control decision, not necessarily a defect in your script.

Start with authorization and the target environment
Before debugging, establish what the automation is allowed to do. If you own the site or have explicit permission, use a staging environment, test account, or provider-supported test configuration. For a third-party production site, review its terms and documented interfaces, then contact the owner if automated access is needed. Prefer an official API, partner integration, explicit automation allowance, or human-reviewed step. If no supported route exists, stop the workflow rather than trying to defeat the control.
This is practical operational guidance; the applicable rules depend on the site and your arrangement with its owner. Cloudflare’s documentation does, however, explicitly distinguish supported testing from automated solving of production challenges.

A practical troubleshooting flow
- Record the interruption. Save the URL, timestamp, environment, browser and automation framework versions, response status if available, and a screenshot or sanitized log. Do not include credentials, session cookies, or other secrets in a bug report.
- Identify the challenge type and vendor. Note whether you see an interstitial, a Turnstile widget, a script-based check, or a message from a different provider. Check the site owner’s configuration or provider dashboard when you control the site. Do not assume every page labeled CAPTCHA is Turnstile.
- Separate test from production. For your own integration, reproduce the flow in a non-production environment using the provider’s supported test route. Keep test keys and test configuration out of production. Passing a test-key flow verifies your integration path; it does not demonstrate how a live production challenge will behave.
- Check ordinary execution conditions. Confirm JavaScript is enabled, challenge scripts can load, network access is stable, and extensions or content blockers are not interfering. For Cloudflare JavaScript detections, a preceding HTML request is needed. A missing signal can also have legitimate causes such as network problems, ad blockers, disabled JavaScript, or a native mobile app. How Cloudflare challenges work
- Constrain approved infrastructure. If an owned workflow runs in a hosted browser, limit its allowed hostnames and dependencies to what the task needs. This reduces accidental requests outside the approved scope; it does not make the browser invisible to bot controls.
- Choose an approved production route. Use the site’s API or integration, arrange explicit permission, or route the case to a human operator. Do not loop retries against a challenge: repeated attempts can waste resources and create noisy traffic without making the access legitimate.
How to test a CAPTCHA in an automated test
Test the application’s integration with the challenge provider, not your automation framework’s ability to solve a real production challenge. Cloudflare’s supported-browser guidance says automated browsers and frameworks including Selenium, Puppeteer, Playwright, and Cypress are not supported for solving production challenges. It directs automated Turnstile tests to test keys. Turnstile testing and Supported browsers
- Configure the test or staging application to use the provider’s documented test keys or sandbox mode.
- Exercise your application’s expected outcomes: challenge rendering, token submission, server-side verification, success handling, and rejection/error handling as applicable to the provider’s documented test cases.
- Keep test configuration scoped to the test environment. Verify production uses its intended site configuration and credentials.
- Use browser automation to assert your own application’s behavior around the challenge. Do not write a test whose success condition is bypassing the provider’s live production control.
The exact keys and expected test responses are provider-specific. Cloudflare’s Turnstile testing documentation is not a general test-key guide for reCAPTCHA, hCaptcha, or other products; check the current documentation for the integration you actually use.

Why Playwright or a hosted browser may still be detected
Playwright automates a browser; it does not confer authorization or guarantee a particular treatment by the target site. Cloudflare states that automated browsers are not supported for solving its production challenges. Switching from Selenium to Playwright, changing a browser context, or moving execution to a cloud machine should not be treated as a supported production solution.
Cloudflare Browser Run is an example of hosted browser infrastructure that supports Playwright and can restrict requests to allowed hostnames. Its documentation also says requests from Browser Run are always identified as a bot. The hostname allowlist is fixed for a session’s lifetime, so set the required domains before starting the session and include only dependencies the authorized workflow needs. These controls are useful for scope and isolation, not for passing production challenges. Cloudflare Browser Run Playwright documentation

Compare authorized ways to run the workflow
| Route | Best fit | Reliability considerations | Scope and privacy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provider test keys or sandbox | Testing an integration you own | Documented route for exercising test behavior; does not reproduce production challenge decisions | Keep test keys and settings in test environments |
| Official API or partner integration | Permitted access to a third-party service | Usually preferable to a UI workflow exposed to changing challenges; availability and terms depend on the site | Use the credentials and permissions issued for that integration |
| Approved browser automation | An owner-authorized UI workflow | Can still encounter challenge changes; define a human fallback rather than retrying indefinitely | Use test accounts, least privilege, and hostname restrictions where available |
| Human-reviewed handoff | A legitimate production task with no supported unattended route | Allows an operator to review a real challenge; not suitable for claiming unattended automation | Keep the review limited to the permitted task |
For privacy questions, consult the specific provider’s notice rather than generalizing from another vendor. Cloudflare’s Turnstile privacy notice lists signals including client IP address, TLS fingerprint, user-agent header, and sitekey/origin; those are Turnstile-specific disclosures, not a claim about every CAPTCHA provider. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure modes and what to do
- The test hangs on a challenge. The test may be pointing at production or using live challenge settings. Use the provider’s test keys or sandbox configuration for an owned integration test.
- A test challenge does not appear. Verify the test page loads the intended widget and that the test environment’s keys and configuration match the provider’s instructions. Avoid assuming a missing widget means the production site would not challenge a visitor.
- A Cloudflare JavaScript detection does not pass. Check whether the flow includes the preceding HTML request, whether JavaScript is enabled, and whether a blocker or network rule prevents required resources from loading.
- Cloudflare Browser Run still receives bot treatment. That is consistent with its documented behavior. Use Browser Run for authorized browser tasks with hostname restrictions, not as a challenge-solving mechanism.
- Retries make no progress. Stop the retry loop and classify the result as a challenge or blocked workflow. Ask the owner for a supported route or provide a human handoff.
- Another provider’s CAPTCHA behaves differently. Test keys, challenge types, signals, and policies vary. Consult that provider’s current primary documentation and the target site’s policy rather than applying Cloudflare-specific instructions.
Or skip the browser setup
If the task is simply to save a page image or PDF—not to interact with a protected application—use a screenshot request instead of setting up browser automation. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. This is not a way to access a protected page: a challenge is not a usable page capture.

FAQ
Does changing browser fingerprints fix bot detection?
This guide does not recommend fingerprint changes to defeat production controls. Use documented test mechanisms for your integration, or obtain an approved production access route from the site owner.
Can I use test keys to prove my production CAPTCHA works?
No. Test-key behavior lets you validate an integration’s test flow; it is not evidence of how live production challenges will behave.
Does a screenshot API solve a CAPTCHA?
No. A screenshot service captures pages it can load under its supported behavior; it should not be used to defeat an access-control challenge.
