If a site challenges or blocks a programmatic screenshot, stop the automated attempt. A CAPTCHA or denial is a site-owner control, not a puzzle to defeat. Confirm you have permission, then use the site’s documented API, ask its operator for an approved integration, or—if you own the site—test in staging with a narrowly scoped allow rule. A screenshot call captures a page after authorized navigation; it does not bypass access controls.
What to do when a website blocks your screenshot script
Use the route that matches your relationship to the target:

Do not respond to a challenge with repeated retries, proxy rotation, fingerprint or user-agent spoofing, stealth plugins, or CAPTCHA-solving services. Those approaches try to get around the control rather than resolve authorization.
Does robots.txt give permission to take screenshots?
No. The IETF’s RFC 9309, Robots Exclusion Protocol (September 2022), states: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” Robots.txt provides crawler guidance; its silence about a path does not grant permission to automate access. Read RFC 9309.

Why switching to a browser may not resolve a challenge
Anti-bot controls can use several signals and methods. Cloudflare documents heuristic checks, signatures, JavaScript detection, and behavioral analysis; which engines are available depends on the site’s plan. Its challenge methods also vary by product: WAF rules can show an interstitial challenge, Bot Management uses JavaScript Detections, and Turnstile uses an embedded widget. Cloudflare says its JavaScript Detection script is injected into HTML responses, not API or mobile traffic, and has a 15-minute lifespan with reinjection before expiry. These are Cloudflare-specific design details, not a description of every provider’s system.
That is why moving from a direct HTTP request to a headless browser does not guarantee access. If a challenge appears, treat it as a decision point: stop and use an authorized route, rather than trying to make the automation look human. How to allow Playwright screenshots on a site you own
- Use staging where possible. Reproduce the intended page and screenshot flow without weakening production controls for unrelated traffic.
- Identify the minimum traffic that needs access. Scope an explicit rule to the known test identity or required API route. Cloudflare’s guidance distinguishes browser traffic from API calls and warns that challenge rules should exclude API calls that should not receive a challenge.
- Keep the exception narrow. Do not disable bot protections site-wide to make one screenshot test pass. Cloudflare documents configurable bot policies and challenge actions for site owners; use a targeted allowance and leave other protections in place.
- Verify the rule with the intended test flow. Confirm that the authorized browser or API request reaches the expected page, while unrelated requests remain subject to the site’s normal controls.

Taking an authorized screenshot with Playwright
Once navigation is authorized and the page has reached its intended ready condition, Playwright’s page.screenshot() captures the rendered page. It is a screenshot API, not a way around a block. For example:

A direct screenshot saves an image. A visual regression test goes further by comparing the output with a baseline, so environment consistency matters. Playwright notes that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode.” Fix the browser and operating-system environment where practical, and control dynamic page content to make comparisons repeatable. When to use an API, a local browser, or a hosted browser
