If YouTube flags or removes your always-on livestream, first identify whether the notice is a Content ID claim, a scheduled copyright removal request, or a completed removal with a strike. Those statuses have different consequences and response options. A scheduled removal can give you seven days to act; a completed removal of an active livestream can result in a strike and a temporary live-streaming restriction. Check the notice and YouTube Studio before deciding what to do.
Identify exactly what YouTube did
Read the email sent to your channel and check the affected item in YouTube Studio under the Copyright filter. Do not treat every copyright warning as a takedown: a Content ID claim is different from a copyright removal request, and a claim typically does not itself create a strike.

| Content ID claim | A claim is not the same as a copyright removal request and typically does not itself give the channel a strike. | Read the claim details. If you appeal a Content ID claim and the appeal is rejected, the claimant may then submit a removal request. |
| Scheduled removal request | YouTube says the uploader has a seven-day window before the removal and strike take effect. | Check the deadline and the actions offered in the notice or Studio. Deleting the content or obtaining a retraction during the window can avoid the strike; in the specified case following a rejected Content ID appeal, canceling the appeal is another option. |
| Completed removal and active strike | The content has been removed and a strike may be active. Removal of an active livestream for copyright also restricts the channel’s live-streaming access. | Review the strike details and choose a supported resolution route, such as seeking retraction or, if the removal was genuinely mistaken, considering a counter-notification. |
Record the stream URL or video ID, the time and material identified in the notice, the claimant, the current stream status, and whether an archive or VOD exists. Save the notice, relevant stream records, licenses or permissions covering the exact use, and communications with the claimant. YouTube recommends documenting evidence and communications.
What happens when an active livestream is removed?
YouTube says that when an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. If the channel gets another strike, the live-streaming restriction lasts 14 days.
#1 Best Overall
A strike is more serious than a Content ID claim. YouTube says strikes can expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed, provided the channel has fewer than three active strikes. Retraction and a valid counter-notification are other potential routes to resolve a strike. Three active copyright strikes in 90 days can result in termination of the account and associated channels.
A takedown notice is not itself proof that you have been sued. However, a counter-notification is a legal process and may be followed by court action. The U.S. Copyright Office describes the DMCA process; laws and procedures outside the United States may differ.
If the removal is scheduled, use the seven-day window
- Confirm the deadline. Check the notice and Studio status to make sure it is a scheduled removal and note the date by which action is required.
- Identify what is implicated. Determine whether YouTube or the claimant identifies a particular segment or a continuing source in the 24/7 feed. Preserve relevant evidence before changing or stopping the broadcast where practical.
- Choose among the available options. YouTube says deleting the content or obtaining a retraction during the seven-day period can avoid the strike. If the removal request followed a rejected Content ID appeal, canceling that appeal is another option described by YouTube.
- Keep records of what you do. Save the notice, your communications, and any documentation supporting your rights or permission.
The official guidance does not establish a special procedure for editing a continuous broadcast while a scheduled request is pending. Do not assume that changing the feed alone prevents a strike; follow the options in the notice and Studio.
If the stream is already removed, assess your options
Ask the claimant for a retraction
A retraction asks the claimant to withdraw the removal request. Keep any message factual, explain the relevant rights or misunderstanding, and retain a copy of the exchange. Avoid unsupported legal claims or threats. YouTube identifies retraction as a possible way to resolve a strike.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConsider a counter-notification only for a genuine mistake
YouTube describes a counter-notification as a legal request to reinstate content removed due to a copyright removal request. It is appropriate only if you believe the removal resulted from a mistake or misidentification—for example, the material was identified incorrectly, you have permission covering the use, or a copyright exception may apply. It is not simply a request for leniency.
YouTube’s Studio form requires legal identity and contact information, including a legal name and physical address, and YouTube says it shares the counter-notification with the claimant. An authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit on the uploader’s behalf through the specified email, fax, or mail routes.
Rank #3
Under the U.S. DMCA framework described by the Copyright Office, a counter-notice includes a signature; identification of the removed material and where it appeared; a good-faith statement, made under penalty of perjury, that removal resulted from mistake or misidentification; the user’s name, address, and telephone number; consent to the relevant federal court jurisdiction; and agreement to accept service of process. A materially false statement can have legal consequences. Do not submit a counter-notification unless you can truthfully support the required statements.
Submit through the current YouTube process
- In YouTube Studio, go to Content and use the Copyright filter to locate the removed video.
- Open the copyright details and choose the counter-notification action shown for that item.
- Enter the requested contact details and a concise explanation of why the removal was a mistake or misidentification.
- Review and accept the legal statements, then sign with your full legal name.
YouTube also describes email, fax, and mail submission routes, which require the specified legal statements, direct content links, contact information, and signature. Follow the instructions currently displayed by YouTube; its interface and submission details may change.
What happens after you submit a counter-notification?
YouTube says that after it forwards a valid counter-notification, the claimant has 10 U.S. business days to provide evidence of legal action taken to keep the content from being reinstated. If the claimant does not do so within that period, YouTube says it will reinstate the content unless it has been deleted.
Rank #4
The Copyright Office describes the DMCA’s service-provider framework as restoration no fewer than 10 and no more than 14 business days after receipt of a compliant counter-notice, unless the original notice sender informs the provider that it has filed a court action. These are not a guaranteed calendar date for a YouTube creator: the statements come from different sources and describe the process at different levels. Allow for YouTube’s handling and do not assume the stream will return on a particular day.
Choose a response based on status, evidence, and risk
| Situation | Time and platform consequence | Prudent next step |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim only | Typically no strike by itself; an appeal can lead to a removal request. | Review the claim and underlying rights before appealing. |
| Scheduled removal | Seven-day window before removal and strike, according to YouTube. | Use the options in the notice, such as deletion or seeking retraction; preserve records. |
| Completed removal, but the claim is genuinely mistaken or misidentified | A strike may be active; a counter-notification entails legal statements and disclosure of contact information to the claimant. | Assess the evidence and legal statements carefully before submitting. |
| Completed removal and no support for a truthful counter-notification | A counter-notification is not a general appeal for leniency. | Consider seeking retraction, reviewing YouTube’s strike-resolution options, or getting case-specific legal advice. |
YouTube says it cannot determine ownership or mediate between creators and claimants. If ownership, a license chain, a copyright exception, or litigation risk is unclear, a qualified copyright attorney can help assess the facts. That may be particularly useful if you are uncomfortable providing the personal information required for a counter-notification. This is a conditional option, not a requirement for every creator.

Quick Recap
Prevent a repeat without treating prevention as a guarantee
- Keep a record of licenses and permissions that covers the specific recording, livestream use, territory, and any relevant term.
- Keep track of the material in a loop or playlist and who supplied it; a continuous broadcast can make it harder to identify which segment prompted a notice.
- Before responding to a claim or removal request, compare the notice with your records and the exact stream segment identified.
- Do not assume that owning a recording, crediting its creator, or using only part of a work automatically gives you permission. Whether an exception applies depends on the facts and relevant law.
