You can promote a 24/7 YouTube stream without uploading the whole stream again: make a useful, self-contained Short, then attach the stream with YouTube Studio’s Related video feature. Viewers can tap that link below your channel handle. It creates a path to your live stream, not a guarantee of views or subscribers.
Why Shorts can help—and what they cannot promise
A Short can introduce a moment, topic, or recurring feature of your continuous stream to viewers who might not otherwise find its live watch page. The Short should deliver something worthwhile on its own; the related-video link gives interested viewers a direct next step.
YouTube says Shorts recommendations are personalized and can reflect viewer responses, watch duration, percentage viewed, likes, and other signals. Topic interest, competition, and seasonality also affect reach. YouTube does not specify a universal posting schedule or Short-to-livestream conversion rate, and it says there is no minimum posting cadence. Treat Shorts as a discoverability route to test, not a growth hack. YouTube’s Shorts discovery guidance also says Shorts performance does not negatively affect long-form video recommendations.
Make a Short from the stream without reposting it
1. Pick a moment that works on its own
Look for a useful segment, a memorable moment, or an answer to a question your audience commonly asks. Choose a piece that makes sense without requiring viewers to watch the full stream first. A full-stream cutdown is not necessary.

2. Edit it into a clear, original Short
Open with the moment or idea—not a long introduction—and give viewers enough context to understand it. End with a simple, accurate invitation, such as “The channel is live with this topic now.” Only describe what the ongoing stream actually offers. Avoid promising that watching the Short will lead to a particular result or that the live stream will always contain a specific segment.
Use material you have the rights to use and make sure the Short follows YouTube’s policies. Do not assume that adding a credit or linking to the stream makes otherwise unauthorized material acceptable. 3. Upload the Short and attach the live stream
- Upload your Short to the same YouTube channel as the destination stream.
- Open YouTube Studio and select the uploaded Short.
- Choose Related video, select the relevant public or unlisted live stream, and save. The Short and destination must follow Community Guidelines, and the channel needs advanced feature access for this control.
- Check the Short in the Shorts player. The related-video link appears below your channel handle; direct viewers to that link in your Short rather than to a URL in the description or comments.
YouTube does not make URLs in Shorts descriptions or comments clickable. The Related video control is the built-in clickable route to another video, Short, or live stream on your channel. See YouTube’s instructions for adding a related video and its guidance on sharing links.
Choose the right destination for a horizontal 24/7 stream
For a continuous horizontal stream run through an encoder, attach its live watch page as the Short’s Related video. This is useful even though a horizontal live stream does not appear as a live tile in the Shorts vertical-live feed. Scheduled streams and Premieres also do not appear in that feed. If you are launching or relaunching a stream as an event, YouTube recommends sharing its link at least 48 hours beforehand and using a teaser or trailer. That is event guidance, not a required schedule for an ongoing 24/7 channel. For the stream itself, YouTube lists mobile, webcam, software-encoding, and hardware-encoding options; a professional hardware encoder is optional, not a prerequisite for Shorts promotion. When a vertical mobile livestream can produce a Short highlight
YouTube offers a separate mobile workflow that may let an eligible creator save a Short highlight from a livestream. It is not a general clip-extraction feature for every 24/7 encoder stream. YouTube’s stated conditions include a vertical stream lasting 10 minutes to 12 hours, started through the YouTube mobile app, with chat enabled; the stream must not be made for kids and must meet safety standards. If your goal is Shorts-feed reach, set the saved highlight to public. Check YouTube’s current live-stream promotion guidance for the applicable workflow.

Vertical mobile Live can also be discovered through the YouTube app’s vertical-live experience. That is a different production choice from using an encoder for a horizontal always-on stream; neither format is established as the best option for every channel.

Measure whether Shorts send people to the live stream
Run a modest, consistent experiment rather than judging the strategy from one Short. Make a small set of distinct Shorts from moments or questions that genuinely represent the stream. Attach the same destination when it is relevant, and compare results over a consistent period.

- Check live-stream traffic sources for changes that may indicate viewers are arriving through Shorts or vertical Live.
- Compare like with like. Since March 31, 2025, YouTube’s headline Shorts view count includes starts and replays without a minimum watch time; Engaged views remain available in Analytics for viewers who chose to keep watching. Earlier and later raw view counts therefore do not use the same definition.
YouTube does not publish a universal conversion rate from Short views to live viewers. A change in traffic after posting is useful to observe, but by itself does not establish that the Short caused it. See YouTube’s Shorts guidance and live-stream settings and traffic-source information.
