You can start a YouTube livestream in about five minutes once your channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. If this is your first stream, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours, so it may not be possible to go live immediately. Check your channel first, then choose the simplest route for what you want to broadcast: phone, computer webcam, or encoder.

Before you start: check YouTube live-streaming eligibility

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to livestream.
  • If you have never enabled live streaming on the channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. After it is enabled, you can start a stream right away.
  • Mobile livestreaming has an additional eligibility threshold: at least 50 subscribers, along with a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device.

These are YouTube’s stated requirements; features and eligibility can vary by region. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and instructions for enabling live streaming.

Choose the quickest route for your stream

Route Best for What you need Key caveat
Mobile app Vlogging or a quick update from a phone or tablet Supported device and a mobile-eligible channel Requires at least 50 subscribers; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Webcam A simple camera stream from a computer Computer with a webcam YouTube lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible browsers.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio/video equipment Streaming software or a hardware encoder Requires more setup: connect the encoder with the stream URL and key, then confirm the preview.

For a first, straightforward broadcast, use the phone or webcam path if you meet its requirements. Pick an encoder when you need production features such as sharing your screen or adding overlays. YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions and encoder setup guidance explain the available workflows.

Go live from the YouTube app on a phone

  1. Confirm that your channel meets the mobile requirements: 50 or more subscribers, verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device.
  2. Open the YouTube app and sign in to the channel you want to use.
  3. Tap Create, then Live.
  4. Set up the stream details and choose its visibility and audience options before starting.
  5. If you want to check your setup without broadcasting publicly, use the available private practice mode.
  6. When ready, start the livestream from the app.

If you do not see the Live option, check subscriber eligibility and channel status first; a first-time activation delay may also be the reason. Follow YouTube’s mobile live-streaming help for current device and account requirements.

Go live from a computer webcam

  1. Sign in to YouTube on a computer using the channel you plan to broadcast from.
  2. Select Create, then Go Live.
  3. Choose Webcam.
  4. Allow browser access to your camera and microphone, then select the camera and microphone you want to use.
  5. Enter the stream details, choose visibility, and check the preview, framing, and sound.
  6. Select the control to start the livestream.

This route streams through YouTube without separate encoder software. You need a computer webcam, and YouTube’s help page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ compatibility. See YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions.

Use an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, or overlays

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a livestream and open the Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
  3. Paste those values into the matching server and stream-key fields in your encoder. Keep the key private: it is the credential that routes the encoder feed to your YouTube stream.
  4. Start streaming from the encoder.
  5. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check the picture and sound.
  6. When the preview is ready, select Go live in YouTube Studio.

Encoder steps and labels differ by software or hardware. Use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions alongside your encoder’s own documentation. Do not share or publish your stream key.

Do a short check before the real broadcast

A brief test using representative movement and sound is more useful than buying a full equipment kit. Check that your voice is clear, the picture is stable, and your upload connection can sustain the quality you selected. If the stream stutters or drops frames, lower the stream quality and test again. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion and matching quality to upload capacity.

  • Listen to the microphone through headphones before starting; watch for echo, clipping, or a muted input.
  • Move in front of the camera or switch between the scenes you expect to use so you can spot framing or capture problems.
  • Choose a stable upload connection. Avoid assuming that a connection that works for downloads will also handle a sustained livestream.
  • Start with equipment you already have. YouTube says, “You don’t need expensive equipment – what you have at hand will do.” A webcam, external microphone, and headphones are typical options for casual or gaming streams.
