You can give a LlamaIndex agent visual access to a website by connecting a screenshot tool, capturing the rendered page, and returning the resulting image as image content the agent can inspect. MCP can connect LlamaIndex to tools exposed by an MCP server; it does not itself take screenshots. For a custom integration, you can instead define a LlamaIndex tool that calls a screenshot API and returns an image block. The agent and model you use must support image input.
What MCP does—and what it does not do
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a way for an application such as LlamaIndex to discover and call tools exposed by an MCP server. The screenshot capability comes from one of those tools, or from a screenshot function you build yourself. Connecting an MCP server that only searches and reads documentation will not give an agent a general-purpose website screenshot tool.
This distinction matters because a tool call can return different kinds of content. A web search tool might return text about a page; a screenshot tool returns an image of its rendered appearance. To let an agent reason about visual layout, it must receive that image as image content—not merely a URL or a textual description of the screenshot.
Choose how to provide the screenshot tool
Connect an MCP server that offers screenshot capture
LlamaIndex’s llama-index-tools-mcp package can fetch tools from an MCP endpoint as LlamaIndex FunctionTool objects. Its documented integration includes get_tools_from_mcp_url and the asynchronous aget_tools_from_mcp_url. You can also limit which tools are returned. The LlamaIndex documentation MCP endpoint is for searching and reading LlamaIndex documentation; its documented tools include search_docs, grep_docs, and read_doc. It is not a website screenshot service.

When choosing an MCP endpoint, check its tool list and descriptions for a screenshot or browser-capture tool. Do not infer that an MCP server can capture arbitrary web pages just because it connects successfully. A server may offer browser automation, documentation lookup, or another capability entirely. Check that the endpoint is reachable from the machine running your agent and follow its current authentication and transport requirements.
Build a direct screenshot tool
If no suitable MCP tool is available, define a narrowly scoped LlamaIndex function that accepts a target URL, calls a screenshot API, checks the response, and returns image content. This approach separates the agent interface from the image-capture service: the LlamaIndex function is the tool, while the service renders the page.
The example below illustrates that shape using LlamaIndex’s FunctionTool and ImageBlock content concepts. Image-content support and agent behavior are version-sensitive. In particular, a Site-Shot tutorial dated September 2, 2026 reports that llama-index-core 0.12.45 or later supports tool content blocks and recommends FunctionAgent for this image use case. Treat that as the tutorial’s version-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every installed version or provider. Confirm the API against the versions you install and test with your selected model.

Use the FunctionAgent and ImageBlock APIs supported by your installed releases, then verify that the model provider accepts the image content produced by the tool. This avoids treating a provider-specific setup as universal runnable code.
Make the tool safe and useful
- Keep credentials out of tool arguments. The model needs to choose a URL, not see or control an API key. Load secrets from environment configuration or a secret manager appropriate to your deployment.
- Constrain URLs. If users or model output can supply arbitrary URLs, validate allowed schemes and hosts. In production, consider blocking local, private-network, and metadata-service addresses to reduce server-side request forgery risk.
- Set limits. Use a finite timeout, restrict acceptable URL length and protocols, and set an image-size or response-size policy suitable for your application. Handle rejected or oversized captures without passing arbitrary response data to the agent.
- Keep the description specific. Tell the model that screenshots are useful for visible layout, styling, and visual state. Use text or DOM tools when the task calls for exact wording, links, or structured elements.
- Ask a visual question. A tool that returns an image only helps if the agent’s model can interpret image input and the prompt tells it what to inspect.
Pick an agent and model that accept image content
A screenshot is not ordinary text. Your tool can capture and return valid image bytes while the workflow still fails to deliver those bytes to a model that can inspect them. Confirm all three parts: the installed LlamaIndex tool-content API, the selected agent’s handling of image blocks, and the model/provider’s image-input support.
The Site-Shot tutorial says its tested ReActAgent path filters image blocks when building textual observations, and recommends FunctionAgent for this use case. It also says the Playwright tool functions it lists do not include screenshot capture. These are tutorial findings that may depend on package versions and the specific tool set; inspect the versions and available tools in your own installation rather than assuming these statements apply to every LlamaIndex release or Playwright integration.
What to capture, and when
- Use a screenshot when the question depends on the rendered visual result: for example, whether a page has a visible modal, how sections are arranged, or what a chart looks like.
- Use text or DOM extraction when you need reliable exact copy, element attributes, or structured page data. A screenshot can make small text difficult to read and does not automatically provide machine-readable page structure.
- Choose capture behavior deliberately. A viewport capture shows the initial visible area; a full-page capture can expose content farther down the page but may be larger and slower. Dynamic pages may need time to render before capture. The exact controls depend on the screenshot tool or API you connect.
- Account for access restrictions. A screenshot of a URL is not necessarily a screenshot of a page behind a login or other access control. Use only authentication and page access methods permitted by the site and your service’s configuration.

Troubleshoot common failures
The tool connects, but no screenshot is produced
First inspect the tools returned by the MCP endpoint or the function registered with the agent. A successful MCP connection only establishes access to that server’s tools; it does not establish that screenshot capture is among them. Choose an endpoint that exposes capture or add a direct screenshot function.
The tool returns bytes, but the agent describes no image
Check that the return value is an image content block with the correct MIME type, rather than raw bytes converted to a string. Then verify the installed LlamaIndex version’s tool-content support, your agent’s handling of image blocks, and image-input support for the configured model. Test the capture function separately from the agent to isolate the failure.
The API request times out or returns an HTTP error
Confirm the service URL, API key, target URL, network access, and timeout. Call raise_for_status() or inspect the error response before constructing an image block; otherwise an error page or JSON response may be mislabeled as an image. Log status and safe diagnostic details, but do not log secrets.

The page may not have finished rendering, may require an interaction or authentication, or may block automated access. Check the screenshot service’s available wait, interaction, and authentication options, and only use them when authorized. A screenshot captures rendered pixels; it cannot guarantee that every page state or below-the-fold element is present.

The model gives uncertain details about small text
Use a larger viewport or a higher-resolution capture if your capture service supports it, or obtain the exact text from a text/DOM tool. Visual interpretation should not replace structured extraction when a precise value or quotation matters.

A screenshot involves page loading and rendering, so the capture request can fail or take longer than a local function call. Set bounded timeouts at both the HTTP and agent-workflow levels, and decide how the application should report an unavailable capture. Avoid blindly retrying every failure: retries can add delay and may repeat a request without changing the underlying cause.
Images also consume more bandwidth and model input capacity than short text results. Capture only when the agent needs visual evidence, and consider limiting output dimensions or retaining a short-lived cache when the same public page is requested repeatedly. The actual latency, image size, model compatibility, and service cost depend on your chosen provider, page, configuration, and plan; no general performance figure follows from the integration pattern alone.
