To let Cline inspect a web page visually, connect an MCP browser server and ask it to take a screenshot. Use Playwright MCP for a Playwright-managed browser workflow; use Browser MCP when you specifically need a screenshot from your existing Chrome tab. Once connected, ask Cline to capture the current page, a selected element, or the full page, depending on the server’s capabilities.
Choose the MCP route that fits the page
The key distinction is which browser session Cline should use. Playwright MCP provides browser automation through a Playwright-managed browser and lists Cline as a compatible MCP client. Browser MCP documents a Cline setup for taking a screenshot of the current Chrome tab, which is useful when the page is already open in your normal browser session.

Neither route is established as universally better. Choose based on whether you need Playwright-managed browser automation or access to the Chrome tab and session you already have open.

Use the current setup instructions for your installed versions of Cline and Playwright MCP. Configuration locations and package launch details can change, so use the vendor documentation rather than copying an unverified configuration snippet.

- Open the Playwright MCP getting-started page. Confirm its current instructions and that Cline remains listed as a compatible client: playwright.dev/mcp.
- Open Playwright’s Cline configuration guidance. The Microsoft Playwright MCP repository includes client configuration information for Cline: github.com/microsoft/playwright-mcp.
- Add the Playwright MCP server using Cline’s MCP configuration process. Follow the configuration location and server details specified by those instructions. Playwright’s documentation directs users to the client’s setup guidance for where configuration belongs.
- Make sure Cline can see the server. Check the MCP server list or status in Cline using the current interface. If the server is not available, verify the configuration and server startup details against the vendor instructions before trying a screenshot prompt.
- Ask Cline to capture the page. For example: “Take a screenshot of the current page and show it to me.” If you need an artifact on disk, include a filename, such as “Take a screenshot of the current page and save it as
page.png.”
The last step is a natural-language request to Cline; the MCP tool performs the browser capture. A screenshot can be returned inline in the tool response or saved to a named file. If you omit a filename, the documented behavior returns it inline.
Connect Browser MCP for an existing Chrome tab
Choose Browser MCP when your goal is specifically to capture the Chrome tab and session you are already using, rather than start from a Playwright-managed browser. Follow its Cline-specific guide for the extension and server setup.
- Install the Browser MCP extension by following the steps in the Browser MCP Cline guide.
- Add the Browser MCP server in Cline using the configuration details and location given in that guide.
- Open the web page in Chrome and make sure the tab you want is the current tab.
- Ask Cline for the screenshot, for example: “Take a screenshot of the current Chrome tab.”
This route is about capturing the existing Chrome tab. If you need to automate a broader browser task rather than inspect that tab, Playwright MCP is the route whose documentation describes general browser automation.
Choose screenshot scope and output
Capture the visible viewport
A viewport screenshot records the part of the page currently visible in the browser. It is the right choice for checking what a user sees without scrolling, such as the position of a dialog, a navigation bar, or a visible layout issue. Ask for a screenshot of the current page or viewport.

Capture a selected element
Playwright MCP’s screenshot tool can capture a selected element. Use this when you need a focused image of a component, such as a chart, card, or dialog, rather than the entire page. Identify the element clearly in your prompt; if Cline cannot locate it reliably, use an accessibility snapshot to inspect the page structure and references before asking it to act.
Capture the full scrollable page
For a long page, request a full-page screenshot. Playwright MCP documents this scope alongside viewport and element capture. Full-page captures are useful for reviewing overall page structure, but a very long page may be harder to inspect as one image; capture a relevant element or viewport when the question concerns a specific detail.
Save a file or view the result inline
Tell Cline the filename when you want a named image file. Playwright MCP documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP. The format can be inferred from the filename; if you do not specify a format in the filename, PNG is the default. If no filename is supplied, the screenshot is returned inline in the tool response.
- For PNG, use a name such as
page.png. - For JPEG, use a name such as
page.jpg. - For WebP, use a name such as
page.webp.
Be explicit about whether you want to inspect the image in the conversation or keep a file for later use. If you need the file in a particular folder, include the desired path in your request and check where your MCP client saves tool outputs.

Use screenshots for appearance and accessibility snapshots for structure
A screenshot answers visual questions: Does the page render correctly? Is a chart legible? Is a button obscured? Does a visual bug appear at this viewport? For identifying page elements and deciding how to interact with them, Playwright MCP’s documentation recommends accessibility snapshots. A snapshot gives Cline a structural representation and references for acting on elements; a screenshot shows their appearance.
A practical sequence is to ask for an accessibility snapshot when you need Cline to locate or understand a control, then request a screenshot when you need to judge its visual appearance. Do not expect an image alone to provide the most useful element references for interaction.
Write prompts that specify the image you need
Short requests work when the scope is obvious. For repeatable tasks, specify the page, capture region, output preference, and what you want Cline to inspect.
- Current view: “Take a screenshot of the current page and tell me whether the header overlaps the main content.”
- Full page: “Capture the full scrollable page as
landing-page.pngso I can review its section order.” - Element: “Take a screenshot of the pricing table element and save it as
pricing.png.” - Existing Chrome tab: “Using the current Chrome tab, take a screenshot of the page.”
For an existing Chrome tab, use the Browser MCP route and wording that identifies the current tab. For Playwright MCP, say whether you want the viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page.

Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
Cline does not show the MCP server
First confirm that you followed the configuration instructions for the intended server and Cline. Playwright directs users to client-specific setup guidance for configuration location; Browser MCP has its own Cline guide. Recheck the server details and any startup or configuration errors shown by Cline, then restart or reload the MCP connection as directed by the relevant documentation.
The screenshot comes from the wrong page or tab
With Browser MCP, bring the intended page to the foreground in Chrome and ask for the current Chrome tab. With Playwright MCP, clarify which page should be open before asking for the capture. A screenshot request cannot reliably resolve ambiguity about which tab or page you meant.
The image is inline when you expected a file
Playwright MCP returns the screenshot inline when no filename is supplied. Ask again with an explicit filename and extension, then verify the resulting file location in your client’s output.
The image format is not what you expected
Include the desired extension in the filename, such as .png, .jpg, or .webp. The documented format selection can be inferred from the filename; when no format is set, PNG is used.

A full-page image is too large or difficult to review
Capture only the relevant element or the current viewport instead. If the purpose is to inspect one control or visual defect, a smaller image is easier to evaluate than a full-page capture.
Cline cannot identify the element to capture
Ask for an accessibility snapshot to understand the page structure and obtain references for interacting with elements, then request the screenshot of the relevant element. Screenshots are useful for appearance; snapshots are better suited to structural understanding and interaction.
