Connecting Gmail to Claude does not, by itself, let Claude send messages. Anthropic’s documented Gmail integration can search and retrieve email context, but it does not create or modify emails. To send a message, you need a separate connector that explicitly provides a send action and permission to use it.
What Claude can do with a connected email account
Anthropic’s Gmail and Google Calendar integration guidance describes access to information in those accounts, not the ability to compose or send email. So you can ask Claude to find relevant messages or use retrieved email context, but connecting Gmail alone does not authorize a send.
Sending requires an external connector or workflow with a message-sending tool. Anthropic’s documentation says custom connectors can expose actions that create or modify data, but it does not verify a specific connector that currently sends email through Claude. Confirm the actual tool and its permissions before relying on it.

Anthropic explains that remote MCP servers provide tools Claude can invoke during a conversation, and that Claude can access only resources the server has permission to access. Connect and test the tool
For a connector in the directory
- Open Claude’s Search and tools interface and open the connector directory.
- Select the connector for your service and choose the option to connect.
- Sign in to the external account and review the access it requests before granting it.
- Enable the connector in a conversation. Start by asking Claude to perform a specific, low-risk test, such as finding a message, rather than sending one.
Anthropic’s tool-connection tutorial recommends breaking complex tasks into steps instead of asking Claude to do everything at once.
For a custom remote MCP connector
- Have the connector owner or administrator add the remote connector URL in Claude and configure its authentication. The server must be reachable from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure.
- Connect to the added service with your account, then enable it for the conversation where you intend to use it.
- If you are in a Team or Enterprise organization, check whether an owner must add the connector before members can connect.
- Review the connector’s available tools and permissions. Confirm that it specifically offers email sending; the presence of a connected account or other tools does not establish that it can send.

Review every message before it goes out
Before authorizing a send, ask Claude to prepare the message and show the recipient, subject, and complete body. Check each field yourself, then authorize the connector’s send action only if the details are correct. This is a safety practice; Anthropic’s documentation does not establish that every connector provides a particular confirmation screen.
- Check the recipient address and any CC or BCC recipients.
- Confirm the subject, message text, attachments, and any quoted or retrieved content.
- Use a low-risk test when first connecting a tool, and do not let an untested workflow send to real recipients.
Limit access and understand the risks
Review the OAuth scopes or other credentials requested by the connector, and grant only the access needed for the task. Connect only to trusted services, and check tool approvals before allowing a connector to send or make other changes. A remote MCP server’s capabilities depend on its implementation and granted permissions; Anthropic says such servers may be able to read, create, modify, or delete data.

Anthropic also warns that custom server behavior can change and that malicious connectors may attempt prompt injection. Disable tools when they are not needed, and monitor changes to the connector’s behavior. For Claude Research, Anthropic advises disabling external write tools because Research may invoke connector tools automatically without further approval.
What the Gmail integration says about account data
Anthropic’s Gmail integration help page says Claude accesses the connected account when a question requires it, retrieves the minimum information needed, reflects the account’s existing permissions, and does not train models on integration data. It also says retrieved data is stored on Anthropic’s servers with the associated chat and can be removed by deleting that chat. Those statements concern the documented integration and should not be assumed to describe every custom connector.
