Start playback in the YouTube app first. If the video is playing but has black bars, open Home > Settings > Picture > Picture Size Settings and try Fit to Screen if your TV offers it. The menu and available options vary by Samsung model and video source.
Start the YouTube video
- Open the YouTube app on your Samsung TV and choose a video.
- If the video is selected but not yet playing, press the remote’s Select or center button to start or resume playback. YouTube’s TV app uses the remote for browsing and playback controls (YouTube Help: Explore the YouTube app on your TV).
Check the screen after playback begins. A browse screen or video-selection state is different from a video that is already playing with black bars.
Adjust picture size if the playing video has bars
- Press Home on the remote.
- Open Settings > Picture > Picture Size Settings.
- Choose Fit to Screen if it appears. On some models, you may first need to set Picture Size to Custom to access Fit to Screen or Zoom and Position.
Samsung’s menu names and controls depend on the TV model and the incoming signal; some streaming apps restrict picture-size adjustments. See Samsung’s picture size and picture mode guidance and picture settings guidance for model-specific details.

Choose between keeping the full picture and filling the screen
Black bars do not always mean the YouTube app is failing to use the screen. A video’s aspect ratio may differ from the TV’s display, or bars may be part of the video itself. In those cases, the bars can preserve the complete image.

| Keep the original frame | Accept bars when needed to show the full picture without cutting off its edges. |
| Zoom or enlarge | May reduce bars, but can crop the top, bottom, or sides of the image. The option may not be available for every model or source. |
Samsung notes that picture-size options vary with the TV and signal. Zooming cannot guarantee removal of bars that were embedded in the video itself (Samsung: Adjust the picture size on your Samsung TV).
If Fit to Screen is missing or unavailable
- Confirm which source you are watching: the YouTube app, YouTube TV, a cast stream, an HDMI device, or a broadcast. The available picture controls can differ by source and signal.
- Check your model’s Samsung manual for the supported picture-size settings. A setting that is absent or greyed out may not be supported for the current source or mode.
- Make sure you are adjusting the TV picture settings rather than looking for a phone gesture. Pinch-to-zoom instructions apply to mobile devices, not a Samsung TV remote (YouTube Help: Watch videos in full screen mode – Android).
Do not confuse YouTube TV multiview with regular playback
YouTube TV has a specific full-screen action for multiview: select the active-audio view and press Select; press Back to return to multiview. That instruction applies to a channel within multiview, not to every YouTube video (YouTube TV Help: Watch multiple events on one screen in multiview).
