If your Samsung refrigerator has stopped making ice, first check that the freezer is at 0°F or colder. Then confirm the ice maker is on, its bucket is correctly seated, and water can reach the refrigerator. Try the model-specific test or reset only after those checks. Samsung’s controls and reset steps vary by model and region, so use your refrigerator’s manual for the exact button location and sequence.
Start with the freezer temperature
Samsung’s US troubleshooting guide says the freezer must reach 0°F or lower for ice production, including on models with an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment. Check the displayed temperature. If the setting is warmer, set it to 0°F or colder, enable Power Freeze, wait three hours, and check again. If the freezer still cannot reach that temperature, address the cooling problem before troubleshooting the ice maker. Check that the ice maker is on and the bucket is seated
Look for an Ice Off indicator or setting on the control panel and make sure the relevant ice maker is enabled. Some models with two ice makers have separate indicators even when a control is shared. Make sure the bucket is fully installed and contains only ice; a scoop or food in the bucket can make the maker detect that it is full. Some dual cubed-and-bite ice models require a particular bucket orientation, so check the manual rather than forcing the bucket into place. Samsung Australia’s ice maker guidance

Confirm the line and household valve
Make sure the household water valve is fully open and the refrigerator’s water line is connected and free of kinks or pinches. If the ice maker has never worked properly since the line was adjusted, Samsung advises checking water pressure before proceeding. Its US guide specifies at least 20 psi in relevant troubleshooting situations; this is not a universal plumbing target for every home or model. Measure dispenser flow, if your model has a water dispenser
Samsung’s US flow check is 6 ounces (¾ cup) dispensed in less than 10 seconds. Collect water in a measuring cup and time it. If the flow is slower, repeat the check with the filter removed, following the manual’s instructions. If flow improves without the filter, the filter may be restricting water and may need replacement. Match any replacement to the refrigerator’s exact model; Samsung’s US guide recommends Samsung-brand filters.
Consider filter age and ice quality
Samsung says a filter rated for 300 gallons lasts approximately six months for average household use. That is the manufacturer’s rating and rough interval, not a fixed schedule for every household; follow the filter indicator and model manual. A restricted or overdue filter can affect ice production. Small, cloudy, dirty, or clumped ice can also point to water or filter conditions; check the supply and filter before assuming the ice maker itself has failed. Use the test or reset procedure for your model
Reset steps differ by ice-maker location and refrigerator model. Samsung’s general US instructions say the Test button may be behind the ice bucket; remove the bucket only as directed by the manual, then press and hold Test until you hear a chime. Samsung gives an approximate test duration of six minutes for an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment and about 30 seconds for one in the freezer compartment. These timings are guidance for the specified configurations, not a universal sequence. Button positions also differ between freezer-door, refrigerator-compartment, and side-by-side makers.
- Find the refrigerator’s model number and open the matching manual or Samsung reset guide.
- Follow that guide to locate the Test button and prepare the ice maker; do not disassemble parts or press a button based on another model’s layout.
- Press and hold Test as directed and listen for the chime or observe the model’s test sequence.
- If there is no chime, Samsung advises a two-minute power cycle followed by one more test attempt.

Allow for production time, but treat estimates as model-dependent
Samsung UK’s guidance, updated 3 August 2026, estimates around 120 cubes per day for refrigerators fitted with Samsung ice makers, or 10–12 cubes every 45–60 minutes. It says output depends on temperature, use, and ice-maker type. These are UK manufacturer estimates, not a guaranteed rate for every refrigerator or a promise for other regions. Samsung says to seek service if the correctly performed Test procedure gets no response after the two-minute power cycle, or if an error code appears. Follow the error-code instructions for your exact model. If the maker is producing ice but output is low and there is no error code, Samsung’s US guide says service is not needed for the ice-making complaint alone; recheck temperature, supply flow, filter, bucket placement, leveling, and door-opening conditions first.
