To earn your first genuine Google Play ratings, give users a reliable app, ask after they have had a meaningful chance to use it, and make the request clear and optional. Don’t buy ratings, offer rewards for them, or ask only people who say they like the app. Google’s in-app review prompt may not appear every time it is requested, so treat it as an invitation—not a guaranteed rating mechanism.
Get ratings without violating Google Play policy
Google prohibits fraudulent or incentivized ratings and reviews, along with other attempts to manipulate an app’s placement. That includes offering a discount or other reward for a high rating, repeatedly rating your own app as though you were a user, and encouraging reviewers to include promotions, coupon codes, email addresses, or links. Ask users generally to share honest feedback. Don’t first ask whether they like the app or would give it five stars, then show the Play review prompt only to people who answer positively. Google cautions against those questions, and filtering requests by sentiment risks creating a biased, misleading funnel.

Choose a good moment to ask
Wait until users have enough experience to form an informed opinion. A sensible moment might be after someone completes a meaningful task, finishes a level, or successfully uses the app more than once. These are ways to apply Google’s guidance, not guaranteed tactics for generating ratings.
- Don’t interrupt onboarding or block a task in progress.
- Don’t repeatedly prompt people who dismiss the request.
- Keep the invitation optional and straightforward.
- Don’t promise a reward or imply that a positive rating is expected.
Choose between an in-app prompt and a Play Store link

Neither approach should pressure users or condition a reward on their feedback. Google’s In-App Review API guidance notes that the quota’s exact value is not public and can change. Calling the flow more than once in a short period—Google gives less than a month as an example—may not display the dialog. For a button that explicitly promises to take someone to rate the app, Google suggests sending them to the Play Store rather than relying on the in-app API.

Implement the in-app review flow carefully
Google documents support for Android devices running Android 5.0 (API level 21) or later with the Google Play Store installed, and ChromeOS devices with the Play Store installed. Check the current platform guidance for the supported environment.

- Request review information. In the Kotlin or Java flow, create a
ReviewManagerand request aReviewInfoobject. Google advises requesting it shortly before you expect to launch the flow, because it is valid only for a limited time. - Launch the review flow when appropriate. Use the returned review information to launch the flow. The Kotlin and Java integration guide describes the sequence.
- Continue the normal app experience. When the flow completes, carry on without assuming that the user saw the card or submitted a rating. The API does not report either outcome.
Show Google’s review card unchanged. Don’t alter its size, opacity, shape, or other design properties; place an overlay over or around it; or dismiss it programmatically. If the request fails or the prompt is suppressed, handle that quietly and let the user continue.

Understand what happens after a user rates
A new rating may not appear on the public listing immediately. Google says it generally holds new ratings and reviews for around 24 hours to detect suspicious activity. Developers may still see and reply to new reviews during that period. If Google detects suspicious activity, it may pause publication of all new submissions while it investigates and remove abusive ratings or reviews. An immediate absence from the public listing therefore does not prove the request failed. Details are in Google Play Console’s ratings and reviews help.

Play Console shows the Google Play rating, lifetime average, and number of users who rated the app. Google says the displayed Play rating weighs more recent ratings more heavily. Total ratings appear only after the app has received five or more ratings; that threshold is a display rule, not a target developers should try to reach through pressure or incentives.

Use available breakdowns to look for patterns rather than treating the overall rating as a diagnosis. Play Console can break ratings down by country or region, language, app version, Android version, device type, device model, and operator. A cluster of low ratings on one app version or device category may point to a release regression or compatibility issue; recurring complaints across groups may indicate a broader problem.
