Install urlwatch, add a named job for each official page you want to follow, configure an alert reporter, and schedule urlwatch to run repeatedly. Use an ordinary URL job when the relevant text is present in the server’s response; use a browser job when the page depends on JavaScript. Add filters to ignore unrelated page changes. For live train-running information, use the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) interface rather than treating a page-change alert as a live-status service.
What urlwatch can—and cannot—alert you about
urlwatch retrieves a page, compares its current output with the previous run, and can notify you when the monitored output changes. It does not watch continuously: alerts depend on urlwatch running on a schedule, and an outage or retrieval error is not itself proof that a notice changed.
This makes urlwatch useful for announcements, recruitment notices, tenders, circulars, timetable publications, and transport-agency update pages. It is not a substitute for a live train-status enquiry. Indian Railways identifies NTES as the route for near-real-time train-running enquiries; use its official interface when you need a train’s current running status, arrival or departure information, or schedule.
Set up urlwatch alerts
1. Install and initialize urlwatch
Follow the current installation instructions for your operating system and Python environment in the urlwatch handbook. There is no single install command established for every platform and environment. After installation, run urlwatch once to initialize its files.

2. Add a job for each official page
Run urlwatch --edit to edit jobs and filters. Give each job a useful name and target the specific official listing or announcement page you care about. Use a URL job when the relevant page content is returned in the HTTP response. Use a browser navigation job when the content appears only after JavaScript runs. Use a command job only if you genuinely need a command-line retrieval step.
Page URLs and page structures differ among ministries, railway zones, and transport agencies, and can change. Check the exact official page you plan to monitor and determine whether it renders its content server-side; no particular Indian agency page is established here as a tested example.

3. Filter for the part that matters
In the job configuration, use CSS or XPath to select the relevant page element, then apply text cleanup or matching filters if needed. For example, a notices page may contain navigation, timestamps, and unrelated announcements; filtering to the notice list can make the alert more useful. Test the filtered output against the page as it currently appears. A redesign or changed HTML structure can make a selector stale, so revisit the job if alerts suddenly become empty or noisy.

4. Configure and enable a reporter
Run urlwatch --edit-config to configure settings and reporters. The handbook documents SMTP email and third-party reporters including Telegram, Slack, Discord, Matrix, Pushbullet, and Pushover. Choose a channel you can check, configure its credentials or account details as required, and make sure the reporter is enabled. urlwatch support for a service does not establish that the service is free, available in every country, or guaranteed to deliver each message.

5. Schedule recurring runs
Use cron or another scheduler to run urlwatch repeatedly on a machine or environment that remains available. The handbook’s quick start recommends not checking more often than every 30 minutes. Choose an interval appropriate to the page and the urgency of its updates, and avoid excessive requests to an official site. urlwatch only checks when the scheduled process runs, so a schedule is what determines how often it can detect a change.
6. Review the first report and later errors
Check that the first run retrieves the intended content and that the filtered output is sensible. urlwatch can report a page as new, changed, unchanged when configured, or errored. Review the diff when a notification arrives: a change can reflect relevant new information, but it can also come from unrelated page content if the job is not filtered narrowly enough.

Choose the right Indian railway or transport pages
For notices and published updates
Start with the relevant official agency’s announcement, recruitment, tender, circular, timetable, or zonal railway listing page. Monitor the listing or specific content area rather than an agency homepage where possible. Confirm the page’s current URL, visible content, and rendering behavior before relying on it.
For live train status
Use NTES for train-running enquiries rather than setting urlwatch against a page and expecting live operational status. A monitor that compares published page content answers “did this monitored content change?”; an enquiry service answers “what is the train’s status?” These are different tasks.

For timetables
Verify the current official timetable page and its effective date before monitoring it. The Ministry of Railways announced on 3 October 2023 that the then-new “Trains at a Glance” timetable was effective from 1 October 2023. That dated announcement is not current timetable advice, and the Passenger Reservation Enquiry page has carried a legacy “Trains at a Glance 2019-20” link. Do not assume an old link is the latest timetable.

Troubleshoot noisy or missing alerts
- No content or an error report: Confirm the target URL still works, then check whether the page requires JavaScript and change to a browser job if necessary. A retrieval error is not evidence of a content update.
- Too many alerts: Narrow the job to the relevant page element with CSS or XPath and use cleanup or matching filters to remove irrelevant changes.
- Alerts become empty after a redesign: Recheck the page’s current HTML and revise selectors or filters that no longer match.
- No notification arrives: Confirm the reporter is configured and enabled, its account or credentials are valid, and scheduled runs are actually occurring. External service availability and delivery conditions still apply.
- Alerts arrive later than expected: Check the scheduler and machine availability. urlwatch does not run between scheduled invocations.
- A timetable or status page seems outdated: Verify the official page and date rather than assuming a saved or legacy link is current; use NTES for running enquiries.
