First, keep the tube intact: flatten the sealed end and press or roll the product toward the cap. If that stops working, a compatible tube key can help. Cut the tube open only as a last resort, because opening it exposes the remaining formula to the environment.
Start by squeezing or rolling the tube
When ordinary squeezing stops dispensing product, smooth the flexible tube from its sealed end toward the opening. Flattening the tube helps push the remaining moisturizer, cleanser, sunscreen, or other formula toward the cap. Work gradually rather than crushing the tube, and keep the opening pointed up or over your hand as you press.

Use a tube key if the tube fits
A reusable tube key or squeezer is optional; it helps roll the tube toward its opening and can make repeated use easier. Fit is not universal, so check the tool’s slot, the tube’s width, and the material it is designed for. For an aluminum moisturizer tube, Dieux gives these instructions for its Squeeze Key: flatten the top of the tube, slide the key onto that end, then roll it down as needed to dispense product. Cut the tube open only when intact squeezing fails
Cutting can expose product that remains on the inside walls, but it also removes the tube’s original barrier to the environment. Skincare.com’s dermatologist article cautions against cutting a tube open unless you expect to use the remainder, noting that packaging is designed to help keep out bacteria and mold: Skincare.com’s advice.

- Wash your hands and use clean scissors. Handle the cut edges carefully; they may be sharp or jagged.
- Transfer the remaining product with a clean cosmetic spatula or other clean implement into a clean container. Avoid repeatedly reaching into the cut tube.

Do not add water to recover product
Adding water may seem like an easy way to thin a stubborn remainder, but it changes the product’s composition and how it works. Skincare.com specifically advises against diluting skincare to get it out of its packaging. Follow the product’s directions instead of trying to stretch the formula with water.

Keep the method within its limits
- Try hand-rolling or a compatible tube key before cutting.
- After opening a tube, use clean tools and a clean container, and do not treat the product as suitable for long-term storage.
- There is no established universal number of safe days for opened leftovers across different formulas, preservatives, and storage conditions.
- These steps are for flexible skincare tubes. Airless pumps, sealed ampoules, and some medicated products use different packaging and should be handled according to their own instructions.
