To open the mine in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow,” accept the quest from the Eternal Fire priest outside Devil’s Pit in Velen. The priest gives Geralt the key after the acceptance dialogue. Clear the bandits inside Devil’s Pit, descend to the large mine gate, and use the key to unlock it.
Where to get the mine key
Find the Eternal Fire priest, also described as a young deacon, outside Devil’s Pit in Velen. Speak with him and agree to help by accepting “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow.” The quest walkthroughs say the key is handed over after the acceptance conversation is complete. TheSixthAxis’ quest guide and High on Films’ walkthrough place the quest-giver at the pit.
How to reach and unlock the mine gate
- Accept the quest and finish speaking with the priest outside Devil’s Pit.
- Enter Devil’s Pit and defeat the bandits, also described in the walkthrough as deserters.
- Descend to the large mine entrance gate.
- Use the key on the locked gate, then continue into the mine and follow the quest objective. The key is obtained before entering; you do not need to find it inside the mine. TheSixthAxis’ directions cover the key and gate, while High on Films corroborates the Devil’s Pit progression.
If the key seems to be missing
A player on the Steam Community discussion reported not receiving the key after the quest dialogue. A reply suggested clearing all bandits and waiting for a cutscene, but the original poster said this did not resolve the problem. That exchange is anecdotal, not a confirmed fix.

- Check that the bandit encounter is complete.
- Make sure the priest’s conversation has fully concluded and the quest was accepted.
- If the key still does not appear, consult troubleshooting specific to your platform and game version. The sources available here do not establish an official, current platform-specific fix.
What the walkthroughs cover
This route addresses the blocked steps: receiving the key and opening the mine entrance. The quest continues with additional investigation and encounters beyond the gate. VULKK identifies the quest as Witcher 3 content, and Gamer Guides lists broader quest objectives.
