Use the method that matches your Apache HttpClient major version: in HttpClient 5.x, call response.getCode(); in HttpClient 4.x, call response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode(). The APIs differ because HttpClient 5.x removed the status line. Check your dependency and imports before choosing a snippet.
Get the status code with HttpClient 5.x
In the classic API, execute the request and read the code from the response passed to the response handler. This complete example prints the code and consumes the response entity:
import org.apache.hc.client5.http.classic.methods.ClassicHttpRequest;
import org.apache.hc.client5.http.classic.methods.ClassicRequestBuilder;
import org.apache.hc.client5.http.impl.classic.CloseableHttpClient;
import org.apache.hc.client5.http.impl.classic.HttpClients;
import org.apache.hc.core5.http.io.entity.EntityUtils;
public class HttpClientStatus {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
try (CloseableHttpClient client = HttpClients.createDefault()) {
ClassicHttpRequest request = ClassicRequestBuilder
.get("https://example.com")
.build();
client.execute(request, response -> {
int statusCode = response.getCode();
System.out.println(statusCode);
EntityUtils.consume(response.getEntity());
return null;
});
}
}
}
getCode() returns an int. In this response-handler form, the client manages closing the response when the handler returns. The code is available on the response object—not on the request. Apache’s HttpClient quick start uses this pattern and explains why response content should be handled: an unconsumed entity can prevent safe connection reuse or cause the connection to be discarded.
If you use an execution form that returns a response
Keep the response within a resource-management scope and close it explicitly. Also consume or otherwise handle the entity before expecting its connection to be reusable. Do not keep using a returned response after its scope has closed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Get the status code with HttpClient 4.x
HttpClient 4.x exposes the code through the status line. With the 4.5 API, a typical pattern is:
import org.apache.http.client.methods.CloseableHttpResponse;
import org.apache.http.client.methods.HttpGet;
import org.apache.http.impl.client.CloseableHttpClient;
import org.apache.http.impl.client.HttpClients;
public class HttpClientStatus {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
try (CloseableHttpClient client = HttpClients.createDefault()) {
HttpGet request = new HttpGet("https://example.com");
try (CloseableHttpResponse response = client.execute(request)) {
int statusCode = response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode();
System.out.println(statusCode);
}
}
}
}
The response and client are both closed with try-with-resources. This is the status-code access pattern shown in Apache’s HttpClient 4.5 tutorial.

Choose the method for your dependency
| Dependency | Status-code expression | Response pattern in examples |
|---|---|---|
| HttpClient 4.x | response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode() |
Execute to obtain a CloseableHttpResponse, then close it. |
| HttpClient 5.x | response.getCode() |
The classic response-handler example reads the response in the handler; a returned response should be closed explicitly. |
Apache’s migration guide maps the 4.x call to the 5.x call and explains: “HTTP response messages in HttpClient 5.x no longer have a status line. Use response code directly.” Consequently, replacing only the method name is not always enough when migrating: make sure the surrounding types and imports also come from the same major version.
Common errors and fixes
getCode()cannot be resolved: Check whether the project actually uses HttpClient 4.x. UsegetStatusLine().getStatusCode()for 4.x, or update the dependency and imports consistently if you intend to use 5.x.getStatusLine()cannot be resolved: You may be compiling against HttpClient 5.x. Readresponse.getCode()instead.- Imports or types do not match the example: HttpClient 4.x and 5.x use different package namespaces. Inspect the resolved dependency in your build and align the request, client, and response imports with that version; avoid mixing 4.x and 5.x classes in one snippet.
- A connection is not reused as expected: Handle or consume the response entity, and close a response-returning execution result. For the 5.x handler pattern above, consume the entity in the handler.
Version and migration note
Use the API that matches the dependency already resolved by your project unless you are undertaking a migration. Apache’s project status page says HttpClient 4.5.x receives fixes for major defects and security issues only and encourages 4.x users to migrate to 5.x; it does not make the 5.x method available to a project that still compiles against 4.x. See Apache HttpComponents project status.

Apache HttpClient is the right choice when application code needs the HTTP response status. If your goal is instead to obtain a clean visual capture of a web page, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server; it does not return the Apache HttpClient status-code result. Its one-request API example is:
