The right display settings can make a monitor look sharper and let it use a refresh rate supported by your setup—but the exact fix depends on your monitor, graphics hardware, connection, and operating system. On Windows, start by selecting the monitor you mean to adjust, then check its resolution and scaling, and finally verify the refresh rate available at that resolution.

Why a monitor may not look or feel as expected

A monitor’s capabilities do not automatically determine the mode your computer uses. Windows offers display modes supported by the connected display and setup, and some refresh rates cannot be used with the current resolution. The monitor, graphics card, selected resolution, and connection all affect which modes are available.

Resolution and scaling are different controls: resolution sets the display mode, while scaling changes the size of text and apps. A lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp or make the picture look small, centered, bordered, or stretched. Microsoft recommends using the resolution and scale marked “Recommended” in typical cases. Microsoft’s Windows display resolution and layout guidance explains these controls.

Which three Windows settings should you check?

1. Select the monitor you want to change

For an external monitor or multi-display setup, first select the intended screen so you do not change another display by mistake. Open Settings > System > Display, then select the monitor in the display diagram. Windows may number the displays; use Identify if you need to match a number to a physical screen.

2. Set resolution and scaling appropriately

With the correct display selected, open Display resolution and choose the option marked Recommended. Then set Scale to the recommended value or adjust it for comfortable text and app size. Scaling is not a substitute for using the monitor’s intended resolution: changing scale alters interface size, not the underlying display mode.

If the recommended resolution is missing, or the image still looks wrong, check the monitor’s specifications and whether the graphics hardware, driver, and connection support that mode. Do not assume that a resolution shown for another monitor applies to yours.

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 160Hz DFR 320Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K V4
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.

3. Check the refresh rate for that resolution

Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the correct monitor and inspect its refresh-rate options. Microsoft defines refresh rate as “the number of times per second that the image refreshes on the screen.” The available rates depend on the display modes supported by the connected setup.

If a rate has an asterisk beside it, Microsoft says it is incompatible with the current resolution; choosing it changes the resolution. Check the resulting resolution before keeping the change. The highest number in a monitor’s specifications is not necessarily usable with every graphics card, resolution, or connection.

What to check if the expected mode is missing

Before buying a cable or other hardware, check the full signal path. Confirm the monitor’s specifications and menu settings, the graphics card’s capabilities and driver status, the selected resolution, and the connection and cable support. A high-resolution, high-refresh combination can impose different requirements from a lower-bandwidth mode.

For example, Samsung’s guidance for a specific 5120 × 1440 at 240 Hz scenario calls out Game Mode, graphics-card support and driver status, and a compatible DisplayPort cable. That is a model-dependent example, not evidence that every monitor needs a new cable. See Samsung’s monitor refresh-rate troubleshooting guidance for that case.

When the problem is color or HDR instead

Resolution and refresh rate address sharpness and motion, not every image-quality complaint. If colors look wrong, check the color profile for the selected display and use Windows’ color calibration controls. If the issue is HDR, confirm that the monitor and connection support HDR and review the Windows HDR controls; Microsoft directs users with HDR-enabled external displays to the Windows HDR Calibration app. Microsoft’s brightness and color guidance covers these settings.

Windows version note

These paths describe Windows settings and apply to Windows 11; some labels can vary by release. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Its documentation also describes Dynamic Refresh Rate requirements for supported Windows 11 devices; that feature is distinct from manually selecting a fixed refresh rate.
