For better sound from wireless headphones, first check their fit, then start with EQ and sound effects neutral. Adjust one EQ control at a time, compare a familiar track at about the same listening level, and check the playback app, headphone app, and connection settings. There is no single EQ curve or codec setting that sounds best for everyone.

Start with fit and a neutral baseline

Seat the headphones securely and, for in-ear models, check that the ear tips fit comfortably. For over-ear headphones, make sure the cups sit evenly around your ears. A poor fit can undermine your listening experience, so check it before trying to compensate with EQ.

Turn off existing EQ and sound effects, or return them to their neutral or default settings if available. This gives you a clearer starting point and helps prevent several audio adjustments from stacking on top of one another.

Find the EQ that actually affects your audio

EQ may be in the music app, the phone’s sound or accessibility settings, or the headphone maker’s companion app. Depending on the device, an adjustment may affect only one app or audio from several apps. Change settings in one place at a time so you can tell what made a difference.

Spotify’s equalizer

Spotify documents an Equalizer setting under Settings and privacy > Playback on iOS and Android. Turn it on to choose a preset or adjust the controls. Spotify also documents an equalizer under Playback on desktop. Menu names can change with app versions.

Spotify warns that on Android, the device’s built-in equalizer may affect other apps as well. Spotify’s audio settings also cannot be changed while Spotify Connect is playing on another device. Spotify’s equalizer instructions describe the available app controls.

Your headphone maker’s app

Some headphones have their own EQ controls in a companion app. Sony’s WH-XB900N help guide, for example, documents equalizer settings in Sony Headphones Connect. Shure’s PLAY guide describes presets and custom EQ presets for supported Shure wireless headphones and earphones. These are model-specific examples, not features every wireless headphone has.

Adjust EQ by listening, not by chasing a universal curve

There is no universally best bass-and-treble curve established for all wireless headphones. Start with a familiar track that has clear vocals and instruments, make a small change to one control, and replay the same passage. Keep the adjustment only if it sounds better to you at roughly the same perceived loudness.

  1. Choose a familiar recording and a passage you know well.
  2. Change one EQ control or select one preset; avoid changing several audio layers at once.
  3. Replay the same passage at a similar listening level.
  4. Keep the change if you prefer it. Otherwise, undo it and try a smaller adjustment or another control.

If you use a headphone-app EQ and a music-app EQ simultaneously, one may alter audio that has already been adjusted by the other. For a clear comparison, leave all but one EQ layer neutral while you listen.

Use accessibility and spatial features for a specific need

Accessibility audio features can help when you need a more personalized listening profile, but they are not generic EQ controls for every Bluetooth headphone. Apple’s Headphone Accommodations can amplify soft sounds and adjust certain frequencies on compatible headphones. Apple offers a Customise Audio flow that compares samples and allows manual adjustment; supported devices are limited, so check Apple’s current compatibility list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s setup guidance says to reset Music EQ, center balance, and set the AirPods equalizer to Recommended before using its Customise Audio process. The accommodations can be applied separately to calls and media. See Apple’s Headphone Accommodations guide for supported devices and setup instructions.

Choose a playback-quality setting with Bluetooth in mind

A “lossless” setting in a music app does not make Bluetooth playback lossless. The result depends on the service, source device, headphones, and connection route. Spotify states that its lossless option supports up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, but also notes that the device and connection method affect whether lossless is supported. Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX can behave differently.

Leave codec settings alone unless you are troubleshooting

Bluetooth codec menus can expose options such as SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, or LDAC on supported implementations. Android developer options may also show sample rate, bits per sample, channel mode, and an LDAC quality-versus-stability choice. Seeing an option in a menu does not mean both the phone and headphones support it or will use it in a given connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ordinary listening, leave codec selection on automatic or default negotiation. If audio cuts out, prioritize a stable connection over a theoretical sound-quality setting. Sony notes that its sound-quality codec effect depends on the connected Bluetooth device and describes a connection-stability priority that favors reliability over sound quality. Android settings and product behavior vary by version and model.

  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Refer to Android’s Bluetooth audio documentation for platform codec details, and your headphone maker’s guide for model-specific connection options.

Keep volume and listening time in a safer range

EQ is not a reason to turn the volume up. The World Health Organization’s 2025 safe-listening guidance gives general exposure examples of 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week and 90 dB for up to four hours per week. These examples are not a personalized guarantee: actual exposure and risk depend on both sound level and time.

WHO suggests keeping device volume no more than 60% of maximum as a general practical rule, monitoring exposure where possible, taking breaks, and using well-fitted or noise-cancelling headphones to reduce the need to raise the volume in noisy places. The WHO-ITU standard sets adult reference exposure at 80 dB for 40 hours per week and a sensitive-user mode at 75 dB for 40 hours per week. See WHO’s safe-listening guidance and the WHO-ITU standard.

When a different pair of headphones may help

If you cannot get a comfortable fit, experience persistent connection problems, or need EQ controls your current headphones do not provide, a different model may address that specific limitation. Compare fit and comfort, companion-app adjustments, compatibility with your phone, and connection stability. App EQ is model-dependent; Sony and Shure’s guides above show examples, not a guarantee that every wireless model offers equivalent controls.
