For a comfortable fit and effective noise cancellation, put each cup on the matching ear, adjust the cushions to surround the entire ear, and set the headband so it rests gently on your head. A secure, even cushion seal helps the headphones work as intended, but noise cancellation cannot eliminate every sound.
How to wear over-ear headphones for the best fit
- Match the cups to your ears. Check the L and R markings. On applicable Sony models, a tactile dot on the left slider can help identify the correct side. See Sony’s fit guidance for its model-specific cue.
- Adjust the sliders and center the cushions. Position each cup so the cushion surrounds the whole ear rather than resting on or pressing against its edge. The cushion should make even, gentle contact around the ear.
- Set the headband gently. Adjust it until it rests softly on the top of your head. The cups should stay in place without excessive clamping pressure.
- Check for anything breaking the seal. Glasses, earrings, or a hat can interfere with cushion contact. If you suspect an item is affecting the fit, briefly remove it and compare how the cups sit and how the sound seems. This is a practical check, not a controlled test.
These are general fit principles; use your headphone maker’s instructions for model-specific controls and care. Sony’s guidance explains that correct wear matters both for comfort and for noise cancellation to work as intended.
How fit affects noise cancellation
Over-ear headphones reduce sound in two complementary ways. The cups and padding create a physical barrier that provides passive isolation; active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and processing to reduce ambient sound. A stable, well-seated cushion supports the overall listening experience.

ANC is not the same as silence. Sony says it is most effective against low-frequency sounds such as vehicles or air conditioning, and that some sounds cannot be completely cancelled. Bose likewise explains that steady background noise is generally easier to reduce than sudden or unpredictable sounds. Nearby speech and changing sounds may remain audible even when the fit is good.

What to check when noise cancellation seems weak
- Reseat the headphones. Confirm that each ear is fully inside its cushion and that the headband and cups remain comfortably in place.
- Check the seal. If you wear glasses, earrings, or a hat, briefly remove the item to see whether the cushions sit differently. Then check that the cushions are attached securely. Bose notes that an improperly affixed cushion can affect noise reduction or sound quality.
- Inspect the earcups. Look for blocked external microphone openings, which can affect microphone performance and noise-cancelling features. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than probing or cleaning ports in a way the instructions do not recommend.
- Consider your surroundings. Nearby hard surfaces can reflect sound; Bose advises moving away from them if you are troubleshooting cancellation.
- Use your model’s official troubleshooting steps. Check its help page for software updates, reset, or initialization instructions. Noise-cancelling behavior may vary with wearing conditions and surroundings on some models, and different types of sound can make performance seem stronger or weaker.
A Bose owner’s guide says rumbling or frequent brief losses of active noise reduction may point to an improper fit or blocked earcup ports. For specific procedures, consult the instructions for your exact headset: Sony’s troubleshooting guidance covers headband and in-ear products, while Bose’s cited support page is for QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen). Button sequences and app menus should not be assumed to work across brands or models.
