To get started with Streamlabs Desktop, install the app, complete its first-run setup, create a scene, add the sources you want viewers to see and hear, then test before going live or recording. Start with modest video settings that your computer and internet connection can handle; there is no single best configuration for every game, computer or platform.
1. Check compatibility and install Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs’ official guidance has conflicting minimum operating-system requirements. Its newer quick-start guide, dated May 20, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimums and recommends Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later. A separate System Requirements article, dated April 25, 2025, lists Windows 10 or macOS 12+ as minimums and recommends Windows 10 or macOS 10.15+. Because those statements differ, check Streamlabs’ current support information and the installer’s compatibility before installing.
The May 2026 quick-start guide lists 8 GB RAM and 10 GB of storage as minimums; it recommends 16 GB or more RAM and a 512 GB SSD or larger. Its recommended CPU examples are an Intel Core i5 11th or 12th generation, or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and higher. It lists integrated graphics at minimum and Nvidia RTX 20/30 series or AMD RX 5000/6000 series as recommended. These are Streamlabs’ published recommendations, not a guarantee that every configuration will perform equally.
- Download Streamlabs Desktop from Streamlabs. The quick-start guide says the site supplies the version for your computer.
- Run the installer and follow its prompts. The installer may add background files such as Windows Redistributables.
- Open Streamlabs Desktop when installation finishes.
2. Complete first-run setup
- Allow camera and microphone access if your operating system asks for permission.
- Choose whether you intend to stream live or record locally. The getting-started flow also asks about intended use and skill level.
- Sign in with a Streamlabs ID or a supported streaming account. If you already use OBS Studio, you can import existing settings; otherwise, choose Start Fresh.
- Select the camera and microphone you want to use, if available. You can use existing or built-in devices; external equipment is optional.
- Choose an overlay if you want one, or skip it and add elements yourself. The onboarding flow presents free and Ultra choices; check the current in-app descriptions for plan details, since labels and entitlements can change.
3. Create a scene and add the picture sources
A scene is a layout that groups what appears in your stream or recording. Sources provide its contents, such as a game, desktop, webcam or alert.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In the Scenes panel, select the plus button and name the scene something recognizable, such as “Gameplay” or “Desktop tutorial.”
- Add a capture source for your content. Depending on what you are showing and which options are available, use Game Capture for a game, Display Capture for the whole desktop, or Window Capture for a single app. The July 2026 guide describes Screen Capture as a unified option where available.
- To add a webcam, add a Video Capture Device source and select the camera. Resize and position it in the preview.
- Add optional sources such as Alert Box or Chat Box only if you want them in the layout.
- Check the source order. Items higher in the source list appear in front of items below them; move the webcam above the gameplay source if you want it overlaid on the game.
Before capturing your desktop or a window, close private documents, messages and browser tabs you do not want viewers to see.
4. Configure and check audio
- In the Audio Mixer, select the gear icon to open audio settings.
- Choose the intended microphone under Mic/Auxiliary Device. A built-in mic or a device you already own may be enough to begin.
- On Windows, set Desktop Audio to match the default playback device in Windows Sound Settings if you want the computer’s sound captured.
- On macOS, Streamlabs’ quick-start guide says desktop-audio capture requires audio-routing software configured as a Mic/Aux source. It gives BlackHole as a free example; follow the routing software’s current setup instructions.
- Speak into the mic or play the computer audio you intend to capture, then watch the mixer meters. Make sure the expected meter responds and that unwanted sources are not active.
5. Choose video and output settings
Open the video and output settings and choose a starting configuration based on the content, computer and destination platform. Streamlabs’ guides do not prescribe one universal preset.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Base (Canvas) Resolution: use the resolution of the monitor or canvas you are building the scene on.
- Output (Scaled) Resolution: choose what viewers receive, at or below the base resolution. A lower output can reduce the work required of the computer and connection.
- Frame rate: Streamlabs gives 30 FPS for slow card games and 60 FPS for fast action games as examples. These are illustrative choices, not performance guarantees.
- Encoder: x264 uses the CPU for software encoding. NVENC uses supported Nvidia GPU hardware; the longer getting-started guide recommends NVENC New for Nvidia graphics cards. Choose an encoder your system supports and can run reliably.
Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate and system capacity. Streamlabs’ 2025 System Requirements article gives 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms as a general guideline, not a guarantee for every platform, scene or connection. Check the destination platform’s current bitrate and upload guidance for the stream you plan to send.
6. Test, then stream or record
- Check the preview for correct scene composition and camera framing.
- Test widgets and alerts you have added, and confirm that the audio meters respond to the right sources.
- To stream, select Go Live, choose the platform, enter the requested stream metadata and confirm. Check the platform’s own current live-streaming and copyright rules before broadcasting material you do not own or have permission to use.
- To record locally, set the save location under Settings > Output, then select Record. Select it again to stop recording.
7. Troubleshoot common setup problems
The app or a feature behaves unexpectedly on Windows
Streamlabs’ July 9, 2026 troubleshooting article recommends installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 redistributables, then restarting—even on a 64-bit Windows system. It also advises updating graphics drivers and Windows, checking firewall permissions, and allowing the app through antivirus where appropriate. These are troubleshooting steps, not prerequisites for every installation.

The scene is blank, the wrong area is visible or the layout is mis-scaled
Confirm that the selected capture source matches what you intend to show: a display, a single window or a game. For a fresh scene collection, the troubleshooting article says to check Settings > Video and verify Base (Canvas) and Output (Scaled) resolution, using the monitor’s native resolution for the base.
The microphone or desktop audio is missing
Check that the correct microphone is selected under Mic/Auxiliary Device and that its mixer meter moves when you speak. On Windows, verify the desktop-audio device against Windows Sound Settings. On macOS, desktop audio needs routing software configured as a Mic/Aux source; a normal microphone selection alone does not capture computer playback.

A reset seems necessary
Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance includes Clear Cache and Restart, but says this wipes user data. Treat it as a reset rather than routine onboarding; try checking capture sources, resolutions and device selections first.
