You can use restdb.io’s admin interface to build a small content store without writing API code. Create a database, define a collection and its fields in Developer Mode, then switch to the data view to add and edit content. Connect a website or app through the REST API only if it needs programmatic access to those records.
What you’ll build
This guide uses an illustrative Article collection with fields for a title, body, and status. Those field names are a practical example, not a required restdb.io setup. Restdb.io describes itself as an online cloud database; its documentation says collections hold records and can also be used to manage content. The quick-start guide compares a collection to “a database-table or a spreadsheet.”
The basic workflow has two parts: set up the content structure, then manage records in the admin UI. An API connection is a separate option for a site or application that needs to read or submit records.
Create a database

Sign in to your restdb.io account.

Open the database menu and choose the create action.

Enter a name for the database and create it.

Find the new database in the overview and open its name to reach its admin interface and dashboard.
Each database has a unique URL that also serves as its REST endpoint. You do not need that endpoint to enter content through the admin interface. See Restdb.io’s Quickstart for its setup flow.
Create a collection and define its fields
Switch to Developer Mode
An empty database must be put into Developer Mode before you can modify its structure. In the admin interface, enable Developer Mode, then create a collection. A collection is the content type or container; each record in it is one item of that type.

For this example, call the collection Article. You could use Page instead if you are storing site pages. These are tutorial examples, not built-in restdb.io content types. Do not use Users as a collection name: it is reserved.

Fields describe each record’s properties. For a small article store, an illustrative schema could include:
- title — the article’s headline
- body — the main text
- status — a value you choose to represent the article’s state, such as draft or published
This is a starting design, not a prescribed configuration. Choose fields that match the information your own content needs. Restdb.io’s quick-start example demonstrates adding name (text), email (email), and photo (image) fields to a Contact collection.

Add and manage records in the admin UI

Turn Developer Mode off to return to the ordinary data view.

Open your Article collection.

Select New and enter a record’s field values.

Save the record, then use the collection’s available views to examine or edit your content.

Restdb.io’s guide lists list, group, JSON, and edit views for working with records. At this point, you have the essentials of a simple CMS: a content type, fields that describe its records, and an admin interface for maintaining them. The Quickstart guide walks through the database, collection, and record workflow.

Decide whether you need the REST API
If you only need to enter and maintain content yourself in the admin interface, you can stop here. Use the API when another application—such as a website—needs to retrieve, create, update, or delete records programmatically.

Restdb.io provides REST endpoints for collections. Its documentation maps GET to listing or retrieving documents, POST to creating, PUT or PATCH to updating, and DELETE to deleting. Requests require HTTPS and an API key or authorization JWT. See the Database REST API and Data manipulation with REST documentation for details.
Protect API credentials
Do not put a full-access API key in browser-side code: visitors can inspect code sent to their browsers. For browser requests, Restdb.io advises creating a CORS-enabled key and limiting it to the collection and methods the browser actually needs. Keep full-access credentials out of client-side code. Read API keys and CORS Ajax calls before setting up browser access.

Set up access for multiple editors
If other people will work with the database, use access levels and collection permissions to match their responsibilities. Restdb.io’s quick-start documentation describes Admin, Developer, and User database access levels. Its roles documentation covers collection access permissions and assigning roles to users in settings. Those are controls to configure for your needs; do not assume a particular collection’s read or write permissions are automatically suitable for every editor. Optional: accept submissions through a web form
A public form is not part of the basic admin-only CMS workflow. If you want visitors to submit content, Restdb.io’s Web Form Generator can generate starter form and JavaScript code from a collection. The documented flow calls for a CORS web API key with POST access. Use limited permissions for public submissions rather than exposing a full-access key.
