To start Cypress Component Testing in a Vue project, install Cypress, open its app, choose Component Testing, and follow the Launchpad to configure the framework and bundler. Then create a component spec, mount a Vue component with cy.mount(), and assert its rendered output or behavior.

What Cypress Component Testing does

Cypress mounts a component in a real browser, separately from the full application. That lets you test what a Vue component renders and how it responds to interactions without visiting a production or staging site. Cypress describes this as mounting components “directly in a real browser — not a simulated DOM” in its Component Testing guide.

The setup flow uses Cypress’s app to detect the framework and bundler, check dependencies, and scaffold configuration. The central setting is component.devServer, which tells Cypress how to serve the component test environment.

Check your Vue and bundler setup

Cypress documents component testing for Vue with Vite and with Webpack. Its Vue overview currently lists Vue 3 with Vite 8 and Vue 3 with Webpack 5 or later. These compatibility versions can change; check the live Vue component testing guide for the current requirements before upgrading or configuring a project.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the bundler already used by your project where possible. Cypress generally discovers the Vite or Webpack configuration by searching upward from the project. You usually do not need to duplicate the entire bundler configuration. If discovery fails or component tests need different settings, specify viteConfig or webpackConfig in the component dev-server configuration; see Cypress’s component framework configuration guide.

Install Cypress and configure Component Testing

  1. From the Vue project directory, install Cypress as a development dependency:
    npm install cypress --save-dev
    Cypress also documents installation with Yarn, pnpm, and Bun in its installation guide.
  2. Open the Cypress app:
    npx cypress open
  3. In the app, choose Component Testing. Follow the Launchpad prompts to let Cypress identify the Vue framework and bundler, check required dependencies, and generate the component-testing configuration.
  4. Select a browser and start Component Testing. The generated configuration should identify Vue and the project’s Vite or Webpack dev server under component.devServer.
  5. Create a component spec in the component-testing spec location shown by your Cypress setup. Use your project’s established spec naming convention; Cypress’s examples use JavaScript imports of Vue single-file components.

The exact generated files and prompts can vary with the project’s framework and bundler, so review the scaffolded configuration rather than replacing it with a copied configuration from another project.

Write and run your first Vue component spec

Import the component and mount it with Cypress’s Vue mount function. For example, if the spec is alongside Stepper.vue:

import Stepper from './Stepper.vue'

describe('<Stepper />', () => {
  it('mounts', () => {
    cy.mount(Stepper)
  })
})

This verifies that Cypress can load and mount the component. A useful test usually goes further and checks an observable result, such as visible text, a changed value, or an emitted callback after a user action. The Vue examples show mounting with props and passing a Cypress spy as a callback prop; the Vue API documents the mount helper.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Example: assert a user-visible interaction

For a component with a button and a callback prop named onIncrement, a spec can pass a spy, click the button, and check that the callback ran:

import Stepper from './Stepper.vue'

describe('<Stepper />', () => {
  it('calls onIncrement when the button is clicked', () => {
    const onIncrement = cy.spy().as('onIncrement')

    cy.mount(Stepper, { props: { onIncrement } })
    cy.contains('button', 'Increment').click()
    cy.get('@onIncrement').should('have.been.called')
  })
})

Adjust the prop and button text to match your component. Prefer assertions about what users can see or do over assertions tied to private implementation details.

Nuxt projects need extra setup

Cypress does not provide a dedicated Nuxt framework definition for component testing and does not execute nuxt.config to recreate Nuxt’s environment. Cypress documents Nuxt 3 and later as Vue with Vite. In an isolated component test:

  • Nuxt aliases such as @ and ~ may need to be declared in the Cypress Vite configuration.
  • Nuxt auto-imported components and composables are not automatically available. Import the needed dependencies explicitly, or configure an equivalent plugin for the component dev server.
  • If imports resolve in the app but fail in component tests, inspect the Cypress Vite configuration and alias/plugin setup before changing the component itself.

The Vue overview and configuration guide explain the relevant framework and bundler behavior.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Cypress does not offer or detect Component Testing for the project The Launchpad has not completed its framework detection or configuration flow. Open Cypress from the Vue project directory, choose Component Testing, and follow the prompts. Confirm the detected framework and bundler before proceeding.
A Vite or Webpack config cannot be found The project config is outside the location Cypress discovers, or the project uses a nonstandard setup. Check the config path and use the explicit viteConfig or webpackConfig option described in the configuration guide.
A component import using @ or ~ fails in a Nuxt test The alias normally supplied by Nuxt is not present in Cypress’s component dev server. Declare the alias in the Cypress Vite configuration, or use an explicit import path.
A Nuxt auto-import or composable is undefined Component testing does not run nuxt.config or automatically reproduce Nuxt auto-imports. Import the dependency explicitly or configure the equivalent plugin for component testing.
The spec mounts but the interaction assertion fails The test may be using the wrong prop, selector, or expected behavior for the component. Confirm the component’s public props and visible labels, then assert the outcome a user should observe. Cypress’s Vue examples provide patterns for callback props and spies.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need website screenshots rather than isolated Vue component tests, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; this example saves a WebP capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
