What you need before installing Cursor
- A computer running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, Windows 10 or later, or a supported Linux distribution.
- A project folder that you are permitted to use with the AI service configured in Cursor. Employer-owned or regulated code may require administrator approval.
- An account for sign-in. Cursor’s Quickstart recommends beginning with a small, understandable task rather than asking for a large rewrite.
Cursor is a desktop code editor with AI features. The exact download choices, supported operating systems, plan allowances and model availability can change, so confirm the current labels in Cursor’s official download and pricing pages when you install or subscribe.
How do I install Cursor?
macOS
- Open Cursor’s official download flow and choose the macOS installer.
- Install the application, then launch Cursor from Applications.
- If macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet, verify that you obtained it from Cursor’s official site before accepting.
Windows
- Download the Windows installer from Cursor’s official site.
- Run the installer and accept the requested permissions.
- Launch Cursor from the Start menu. If your organization manages software installation, follow its approval process instead of bypassing it.
Linux
The Quickstart documents Debian/Ubuntu and RHEL/Fedora package installation, plus an AppImage option. Package installation is preferred because it provides desktop icons, automatic updates and CLI tools. Select the package that matches your distribution and architecture, install it using your distribution’s normal software workflow, and then launch Cursor from the applications menu or command line. Do not paste a command from an older guide without checking the current Quickstart: package names and commands can change.
First launch: sign in and open a project
- Start Cursor and sign in when prompted.
- Choose Open Folder (or the equivalent folder-opening command) and select the root of an existing project. Opening the repository root gives Agent the context it needs to find configuration files, entry points and modules.
- Wait for indexing to finish before asking questions about the whole codebase. For a large repository, exclude generated files, dependency directories and secrets using your normal workspace settings.
- Confirm that the folder contains no credentials such as API keys or private certificates. Cursor settings and your organization’s policy determine what may be sent to configured AI providers.
If you only want to experiment, create a small local repository first. You can then inspect every proposed edit without risking production code.

What should I ask Cursor first?
Open Agent and use this exact starter prompt from Cursor’s Quickstart:
“Explain this codebase. Point me to the main entry points, key modules, and anything I should read before making changes.”
Read the response against the files rather than treating it as documentation. Follow the cited entry point, check the package or build configuration, and ask a focused follow-up when a term is unclear. Useful follow-ups include:
- “Which command runs the test suite, and where is it configured?”
- “Trace the request from this route to the database call. Name each file.”
- “What assumptions would make this change unsafe?”
These questions keep the first session oriented around facts in your repository instead of speculative code generation.

Make one small, reviewable change
- Ask Agent for several low-risk improvements, such as correcting copy or fixing a small UI issue. Cursor specifically describes copywriting and small UI fixes as good first tasks.
- Ask it to explain the trade-offs and identify the files it would modify.
- Choose one change and request an implementation limited to those files. State what must not change, such as public APIs, database schemas or generated files.
- Review the proposed diff line by line. Check naming, error handling, accessibility, tests and unintended formatting changes.
- Run the project’s existing tests, linter and build commands yourself. Inspect the rendered result for UI work.
- Keep or revert the change using your normal version-control workflow, then commit only after the result is understandable.
AI output is a proposal, not proof that the code is correct. A small diff makes mistakes easier to spot and rollback.

When should I use Plan Mode?
Use Plan Mode when a request spans multiple files, needs repository research, has unclear requirements or requires approval before coding. Cursor describes Plan Mode as researching the codebase, clarifying requirements, producing a plan and waiting for approval.
- Describe the outcome, constraints and acceptance criteria.
- Ask Plan Mode to locate relevant modules, tests, configuration and potential risks.
- Read the plan and correct misunderstandings before approving implementation.
- Approve only a plan that names a bounded set of changes and a validation strategy.
- After implementation, review the complete diff and run the proposed checks.
For a one-line typo or isolated style fix, Plan Mode usually adds unnecessary ceremony; for migrations and cross-cutting behavior, it prevents premature edits.
Is Cursor free to use?
Cursor lists a free Hobby plan and paid individual plans. The following figures are the plan prices shown in Cursor documentation for 2026; names, taxes, included usage and model allowances can change.

Cursor itself estimates that daily Agent users typically spend $60–$100 per month in total usage and that power users running multiple agents or automation often spend $200 or more. Those are Cursor’s guidance, not independent benchmarks; your model selection and activity determine actual usage. Check the current pricing and Models & Pricing documentation before purchasing. Subscriptions are sold directly through cursor.com; Cursor says it does not authorize resellers or third-party sellers.
Should I turn on Privacy Mode?
Check Cursor’s Privacy Mode before opening confidential or employer-owned repositories. Cursor states: “When it is enabled, we guarantee that code data is not used for training by us or our model providers.” This statement concerns training use; it does not by itself establish a retention period, access policy, security certification or data-residency location. Your company’s administrator or legal policy may impose additional requirements.

- Find the Privacy or Privacy Mode control and read the current description.
- Enable it if your policy requires the stated no-training guarantee.
- Review model-provider, telemetry and workspace settings as well; Privacy Mode is not a substitute for your organization’s review.
For highly restricted code, ask your administrator which repositories and providers are approved before using any AI feature.
Common setup problems and fixes
The installer will not run
Confirm that your OS meets the documented minimum (macOS 12+, Windows 10+, or a supported Linux distribution), download a fresh installer from the official site, and check whether device-management software blocks installation. On Linux, use the package format for your distribution; the AppImage is an alternative when package installation is unavailable.
Cursor opens but cannot see my files
Open the repository root rather than an individual source file, grant the operating system’s folder permission, and wait for indexing. Check workspace exclusions so the files you are asking about are not hidden.
Agent gives an incomplete explanation
Ask it to name files and symbols, then open those files yourself. Large generated directories and missing dependencies can obscure context; exclude noise and ask narrower tracing questions.
The proposed change is too broad
Re-state the allowed files and acceptance criteria, or switch to Plan Mode. Reject and regenerate proposals that modify lockfiles, configuration or unrelated modules without a reason.

Usage runs out or costs more than expected
Check the active plan, model and remaining usage in Cursor’s account controls. Reduce repeated long-context prompts, ask for targeted diffs, and confirm current allowances before upgrading. Cursor’s published spending estimates are not guarantees.
I cannot use Privacy Mode or a model
Workspace or team administration may control available settings. Contact the administrator and do not paste restricted code into an unapproved model as a workaround.
