To get started, choose an end-to-end (E2E) framework that fits your language and browser needs, install its runner and browser dependencies, then automate one important user journey and assert what a user can see. Run that test locally until it is reliable, then add it to continuous integration (CI). For a JavaScript or TypeScript project, Playwright Test is a practical starting point when its integrated runner and browser support fit; Selenium and Cypress are also credible choices for different teams.
Choose a framework that fits your project
Before installing anything, note your project language, the browsers your users rely on, how tests will run in CI, and whether your team already maintains a browser-testing framework. There is no universal best choice: the right framework depends on those constraints.
| Framework | Setup model | Language and browser fit | Scaling path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | Test runner plus CLI-managed, version-matched browser binaries. | Particularly direct for JavaScript and TypeScript projects. The reviewed documentation covers Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; branded Chrome and Edge can also be used. | Parallel workers and sharding. |
| Selenium WebDriver | Language binding, browser, and driver. Selenium Manager handles driver management by default in supported bindings. | Language-neutral WebDriver protocol with multiple language bindings and broad browser reach through WebDriver implementations. | Selenium Grid for distributed execution; Selenium IDE is an optional record-and-playback entry point. |
| Cypress | Cypress runner, application server, and selected browser. | JavaScript-oriented E2E workflow. Its reviewed browser guide supports Chrome-family browsers and Firefox; WebKit is marked experimental. | CI and cross-browser workflows. |
These details reflect the frameworks’ official documentation reviewed on October 3, 2026, and can change. Check current setup and browser-support guidance before adopting a version. See Playwright browser installation, the Selenium documentation, and Cypress browser guidance.
Install the smallest useful setup
Playwright Test
- In a Node.js project, add Playwright Test as a development dependency:
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test. - Install the browser binaries with
npx playwright install. To begin with Chromium only, usenpx playwright install chromium. - On Linux CI, install required system dependencies too, using
npx playwright install --with-deps chromiumwhen Chromium is the only initial target.
Playwright browser binaries are tied to Playwright releases. After updating the package, rerun the browser install command so the installed browser version matches. Consult the browser installation documentation for current platform-specific details.

Selenium WebDriver
Install the Selenium binding for your language and make sure the target browser is installed. Selenium describes the setup as language binding, browser, and driver; Selenium Manager can manage drivers automatically in supported bindings. If an existing Selenium suite needs distributed execution, Selenium Grid is an option, but it is not required for a first local test. See Selenium’s getting-started guidance.
Cypress
Follow Cypress’s E2E setup for your project, configure the application’s base URL, and ensure the browser used in local or CI runs is available there. Cypress recommends Chrome for Testing when a pinned, reproducible Chrome binary is desirable. See Cypress E2E testing guidance and its browser-launching documentation.
For any framework, use a dependency lockfile and keep local and CI environments as similar as practical. If browser auto-updates cause inconsistent results, use a controlled browser build. Install only the browsers the suite actually runs; add more when cross-browser coverage is useful.

Write your first browser test with Playwright
This minimal example assumes a Node.js project and a reachable test page. It opens a page, performs a user-visible action, and checks the resulting visible state. Save it as tests/first.spec.ts after installing Playwright Test and Chromium as described above.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('user can open the pricing page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'More information' }).click();
await expect(page).toHaveURL(/iana.org/);
});
The example uses a public demonstration page, not an application under test. Replace the URL, accessible link name, and expected URL with values from your own test environment. Run the test with npx playwright test. For a project that serves its own app, configure the base URL and start the app as part of your local or CI workflow before the browser test runs.
Choose a user journey and assert its outcome
Start with a high-value path that can run deterministically in a test environment, such as signing in or completing a checkout flow. Give the test explicit prerequisites and assert the result the user should see: a confirmation message, an account page, or a completed-order state. Avoid coupling the test to private implementation details unless those details are specifically what you intend to test.

Playwright’s guidance is to test end-user behavior rather than implementation details such as function names or CSS classes. Prefer locators based on accessible roles and names, or a deliberate test contract. Its locators wait for actionability and retry checks, which can reduce timing assumptions; wait for meaningful application state instead of inserting arbitrary delays. See Playwright’s best practices.
Keep tests independent
A test should not pass only because another test ran first. Set up its own relevant account state, records, cookies, and storage, or reset them as part of setup. Isolate mutable data so one run cannot silently affect the next. This also makes a failing test easier to reproduce.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run locally, then in CI
- Run the test in the browser you selected and fix unstable setup, locators, or assertions before adding more coverage.
- Add the reliable test to CI on commits or pull requests, using the same dependency versions and browser target as your local run where practical.
- Begin with the browser that matters most to your application. Add other engines and viewport or device profiles intentionally rather than installing every browser in every CI job.
- When the suite grows, consider parallel workers or sharding only if independent tests and runtime needs justify them. Preserve traces, screenshots, or video where your tool provides them so failures can be diagnosed.
Expand coverage around critical user journeys and defects that have escaped before. Browser tests are most useful when they verify user-visible behavior that lower-level tests do not adequately cover; test architecture, test data, and isolation remain your team’s responsibility regardless of framework.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Click fails intermittently: Replace fixed sleeps with a locator tied to a visible, actionable element and wait for the application state that matters.
- Selector breaks after a design change: Prefer a role and accessible name or a stable, intentional test contract over incidental CSS structure.
- Tests pass alone but fail in a suite: Look for shared accounts, cookies, storage, or mutable records; isolate or reset state for each test.
- Browser is missing in CI: Install the browser binary required by the selected framework and platform. For Playwright, rerun its browser installer after package updates; on Linux, include the required system dependencies.
- Results differ between local and CI: Align dependency and browser versions, use the lockfile, and control browser builds if auto-updates are causing drift.
- CI runs are unnecessarily slow or costly: Start with only the required browser. Add cross-browser jobs when the user or product requirements support them.
- A recorded test is unreliable: Review its selectors, assertions, and data setup instead of treating recording as a finished test design.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an E2E test framework; it does not replace testing interactions or application behavior. If your immediate need is a browser-rendered screenshot as part of a developer workflow, one GET request returns an image or PDF. For browser-based E2E testing, keep the framework workflow above.
For example, this cURL request returns a WebP screenshot of the target page; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for output and other options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo for details, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Should I test every browser from the start?
No. Start with the browser most important to your users, then add engines and profiles based on your application’s needs.
Is a browser screenshot the same as an automated browser test?
No. A screenshot captures rendered output; an E2E test performs actions and checks user-visible behavior.
