To add Applitools visual checks to Robot Framework, use Applitools’ EyesLibrary integration: install it in your Python environment, configure an Applitools API key, run the official quickstart, then add Eyes session keywords to your own suite. The steps below use the vendor’s documented quickstart; check its current repository instructions and package documentation before pinning versions.
What you need
- Python 3 and a working Robot Framework environment. For setup guidance, see the Robot Framework getting-started documentation.
- EyesLibrary, Applitools’ visual verification library for Robot Framework, built on the Applitools Eyes Python SDK.
- A browser or application automation library. The EyesLibrary reference names SeleniumLibrary and AppiumLibrary as companion options; choose based on whether your suite automates a browser or a mobile application.
- An Applitools API key, supplied through configuration or the
APPLITOOLS_API_KEYenvironment variable.
The surfaced EyesLibrary reference identifies version 5.6.0, but that does not establish that it is the latest release or that it supports every current Python and Robot Framework version. Check the current keyword documentation and package release information, then lock compatible dependencies for repeatable test runs.
Install and run the official quickstart
-
Clone the starter repository, enter it, and install EyesLibrary in the Python environment used for your tests:
git clone https://github.com/applitools/robotframework-quickstart.git cd robotframework-quickstart python3 -m pip install eyes_robotframeworkThese are the commands documented by the Applitools Robot Framework quickstart. The repository may update its setup instructions, so follow its current guidance if it differs.

Provide your API key. The quickstart and keyword reference describe putting it in

- Start the browser or application with your chosen automation library.
- Open an Eyes session.
- Perform a visual check at the scope relevant to the test, such as a whole window, a region, or a frame.
- Close the Eyes session asynchronously.
Use the keyword reference for the exact keyword names, arguments, and supported settings. Browser startup, application setup, and the right check configuration vary by project, so there is no single complete suite that can safely be copied into every environment. Choose a window check when the overall view is what matters; use a region or frame when the test should focus on a smaller part of the page or application.
Review baselines and test results
On an initial run, Applitools’ first-steps material describes creation of a provisional baseline. Treat that baseline as something to review, not as proof that the rendered page is correct: confirm that the application is in the intended state and that the captured design is the one you want subsequent runs to compare against. Applitools’ Eyes First Steps overview describes reviewing results in Eyes Test Manager. Its Robot Framework walkthrough also demonstrates a changed page producing a visual difference. The walkthrough was published in 2021, so consult current Applitools documentation for present dashboard labels and workflows.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Robot cannot find EyesLibrary: Confirm that the intended Python environment is active and that
eyes_robotframeworkwas installed into that same environment. Usingpython3 -m pipties pip to the Python interpreter used for installation. - The API key is missing or rejected: Check that the test process can read the configured key or
APPLITOOLS_API_KEY. Avoid printing the key in logs or sharing it in public troubleshooting output. - A keyword or argument is not recognized: Check the installed version’s keyword reference for the exact spelling and supported arguments. Do not assume an older tutorial matches the package currently installed.
- The visual result differs unexpectedly: Verify the browser or application reached the expected state before opening or checking the Eyes session, then review the captured result and baseline in the dashboard before accepting a change.
Or skip the browser setup:
For a single website screenshot rather than a Robot Framework visual test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Install the Python requests package if needed, then run this example (replace the target URL as needed). See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
