You can start Old School RuneScape (OSRS) for free, create a standard account, and decide what to pursue as you learn. You do not need to buy membership or follow a mandatory quest route before you begin.

How do you start playing OSRS?

Download the game through a route listed on Jagex’s official OSRS site or its official download page. Jagex lists desktop options for Windows, Mac, and Linux through the Jagex Launcher, as well as Steam, the Apple App Store, and Google Play.

Jagex’s New Player Guide: Settings & Set-Up, published 12 August 2025, describes the Official Client as the only client available on both desktop and mobile. It also identifies RuneLite and HDOS as supported third-party clients. For a first install, use Jagex’s official links rather than search ads or lookalike download pages.

After creating your account, you’ll begin on Tutorial Island, where the game introduces basic actions and asks you to choose an account mode. You can play on desktop or phone; a mouse can be a useful desktop convenience, but it is not required. Jagex’s guide emphasizes mouse controls for computer play, while its official download options include mobile.

RuneScape 3 [Instant Access]
  • RuneScape Membership offers players a huge variety of benefits such as hundreds of additional quests and adventures, a larger game world to explore, exclusive skills and master and access to a whole host of minigames.
  • The Members Loyalty Programme also allows users to unlock unique rewards, outfits and emotes to show off to their friends.
  • Players can also access the most powerful weaponry and armour in the game, create clan citadels with their friends and even build their very own house.
  • Now buy extra spins for the Squeal of Fortune: a game of chance with fantastic in-game prizes on offer: some exclusive; some powerful; and some...well...nutritious. Everyone's a winner, and it's quick and easy to play every day!

Which account mode should a beginner choose?

If you want the least restricted experience, choose the standard account mode. It allows ordinary trading and Grand Exchange access, giving you the broadest flexibility while you learn.

Ironman is a self-imposed challenge with restrictions on trading and Grand Exchange access, not an upgrade. Group modes are designed for cooperative restricted accounts. Jagex says the mode choice is made on Tutorial Island; choose deliberately, since you should not assume you can switch later. Its guide specifically does not recommend Hardcore Group Ironman for new players.

Can you play OSRS for free?

Yes. The official OSRS site offers a “Try Free” option alongside membership. Free play is a reasonable way to see whether the game’s pace and style appeal to you before paying.

Membership adds optional content, including more quests, member-only skills and regions, member worlds, and additional bank capacity. Whether that is worthwhile depends on which of those features you want, how much you’ve played, and the current price and billing terms for your location. Check Jagex’s membership page for current local pricing and terms; prices are not included here because they vary and were not available in the page content reviewed.

What about Old School Bonds?

Old School Bonds are in-game items that can be traded directly to other players or through the Grand Exchange, then redeemed for OSRS membership. Jagex states that Bonds are tradable only within Old School RuneScape; they cannot be transferred to RuneScape for RuneCoins or Keys. A Bond is an in-game route to membership, not a physical product. See Jagex’s Old School Membership Bonds page for details.

What should you do first in OSRS?

OSRS is built around self-directed play. Jagex describes it as a sandbox focused on adventure and finding your own path, so treat early goals as options rather than a required progression order.

  1. Learn movement and the interface. Get comfortable moving, interacting with objects and characters, and using the game’s panels. On desktop, the mouse is central to many actions; on mobile, use the touch controls.
  2. Browse a few quests. Open the quest list from the quest tab. Jagex’s guide says you can filter for recommended quests or active quests. Check requirements before choosing one, and pick a task that sounds interesting rather than trying to clear the entire list.
  3. Sample skills. The skill panel opens individual skill guides and shows level unlocks. Try a few activities to see which skills or styles of play you enjoy.
  4. Set one short-term goal. You might complete a quest, raise a skill to a level that unlocks something, or explore a new location. A small goal gives you direction without locking you into a long route.

If you get stuck, look for the Activity Adviser, consult the world map, or use the in-game Wiki button to look up an unfamiliar object, quest character, or feature. These tools can answer specific questions without requiring a full walkthrough.

Which settings can make early play more comfortable?

Jagex’s 12 August 2025 setup guide suggests several settings to consider. Labels and behavior may change, so check the current settings menu in your client before relying on an exact path.

  • Shift-click dropping: can make dropping items more convenient.
  • Hide roofs: can improve visibility when buildings obscure your character.
  • Scroll-wheel camera zoom: lets you adjust the view with the mouse wheel on desktop.
  • View distance: the Official Client offers a setting to adjust how far you can see.
  • Player-attack options: review these carefully, especially for Wilderness safety, where player combat is possible.

The same guide recommends using the in-game Wiki button when you need information about an item, quest NPC, or unfamiliar content. You can also adjust settings later as you learn which controls suit you.
