Start by learning how enemy attack cues work, then switch weapons to suit the opponent rather than forcing one weapon through every fight. For exploration, follow the Gust Wind when you have a destination and use the spyglass when you want to find nearby points of interest. Take useful activities such as Hot Springs, Bamboo Strikes, and Altars of Reflection when they fit your route; there is no need to clear every landmark before moving on.

Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 game first released on October 2, 2025. The opening is easier to approach if you treat combat, navigation, and progression as connected systems—not as a checklist you must finish before advancing.

Learn the combat cues before trying to overpower every enemy

In a fight, watch the attack cue and respond to the move it signals. GameSpot’s beginner guide describes these controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ordinary attacks: Hold L1 to block most basic attacks.
  • Blue glint: Press L1 just before impact to parry.
  • Red glint: Press Circle to evade.
  • Yellow glint: The enemy may try to disarm Atsu. Hold Triangle, then release it as the enemy swipes.

Strong attacks can break an opponent’s guard. Spirit, earned through kills, parries, and advanced techniques, can be spent to restore health or activate abilities. That makes learning to parry useful beyond avoiding damage: it also helps build a resource you can use during combat. See GameSpot’s beginner guide for its control and combat overview.

#1 Best Overall
Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

Change weapons to meet the matchup

GameSpot’s matchup advice is to use a katana or odachi against opponents with one-handed weapons, and dual blades against slower enemies wielding two-handed polearms. Treat that as a useful starting point, not an exhaustive rule for every encounter. Weapon types can be switched during a fight, and ranged weapons give you another option against enemies at a distance.

If you prefer a familiar weapon, you can still use it; switching is a way to respond when a matchup feels difficult, not a requirement to change constantly. Pay attention to whether an enemy’s weapon, speed, or distance is making your current approach awkward.

Pick a style that suits how you want to fight

PlayStation Blog presents two build concepts that illustrate different approaches. Its Warrior concept emphasizes parries, heavy attacks to stagger enemies, and matching your weapon to the opponent. Its Ghost concept focuses on stealth and chain assassinations; sake jars and smoke bombs can help you return to concealment if you are spotted. These are play-style examples, not mandatory beginner builds or a universal ranking.

Ghost of Yotei (PS5)
  • Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
  • Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
  • Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.

The blog says Atsu begins with three saved builds and can eventually save five. It also notes that some armor effects activate when your weapon is aligned with the armor. Read PlayStation Blog’s combat build guide for the full build concepts.

Navigate with the wind, then use the spyglass for detours

When you want to keep moving toward a tracked quest or destination, follow the Gust Wind rather than repeatedly checking the map. Your horse is available from the start, while signposts and NPCs can provide directions. Golden birds lead to notable places, offering a reason to follow a nearby clue even when you are not actively searching for a specific activity.

When a landmark catches your eye, use the spyglass to check for points of interest. GameSpot’s guide says to scan for a yellow glow, focus on it to mark the location, and visit it; a discovered location can then become a fast-travel destination. The game also allows fast travel to most discovered locations through the map. The practical balance is simple: use the wind to stay oriented on a quest, and the spyglass to decide whether a nearby detour is worth taking. This is a flexible way to navigate, not a required route.

  • Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
  • A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.

Choose early activities by the benefit you want

Several activities offer distinct progression benefits. Take them when convenient rather than interrupting every journey to seek them out.

Activity What it provides When it may suit you
Hot Springs Increase maximum health. Useful if you want more room to survive mistakes in fights.
Bamboo Strikes Increase Spirit capacity. Spirit fuels healing and combat abilities. Worth trying if you often want more Spirit available for recovery or abilities.
Altars of Reflection Unlock skills or let you select unlocked perks. Visit when you want to develop Atsu’s abilities. The beginner guide says they can be revealed with the spyglass or Traveler’s Maps purchased from Isaburo at the Old Inn.

These rewards support different needs, so no single order is established as best. For a fuller activity overview, see GameSpot’s Ghost of Yōtei guides hub.

Use camps and allies to support your preferred approach

Camps are useful pause points, especially when you want to prepare rather than press directly into the next encounter. GameSpot lists these options at camp:

  • Decide whether you want to run your Zoo above board... or break the law and pocket the extra cash
  • Cook food for temporary buffs.
  • Craft ranged ammunition.
  • Rest to restore health and Spirit.
  • Play the shamisen.

Atsu’s Wolf Pack members can support you with their wares and specialties as you recruit them. Their availability is not presented as something to assume from the opening moments, so treat allies as support to discover over time rather than a prerequisite for getting started.

A flexible first-session plan

  1. In your first fights, practice reading cues. Block ordinary attacks, parry blue-glint attacks, evade red-glint attacks, and answer yellow-glint disarm attempts with the indicated hold-and-release action.
  2. Try a weapon change when an enemy is giving you trouble. Use the matchup advice as a starting point and see whether another weapon makes the fight more manageable.
  3. Follow the Gust Wind when you want to advance a destination. Use the horse, signposts, or directions from NPCs as needed.
  4. Take a nearby progression activity if its reward fits your needs. A Hot Spring favors survivability, a Bamboo Strike builds Spirit capacity, and an Altar of Reflection develops skills.
  5. Pause at a camp when preparation would help. Cook, craft ammunition, or rest; if you prefer stealth, use concealment and tools such as sake jars or smoke bombs to recover when detected.
