Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to the monitor’s HDMI input, select that input on the monitor, and check that its speakers are unmuted and turned up. Then confirm PS4 audio is set to HDMI. If your monitor has no speakers or usable audio output, listen through a headset connected to the controller or use a compatible HDMI audio extractor.
First, check the PS4 and monitor audio settings
- Connect an HDMI cable from the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the monitor, then select that input on the monitor. Sony’s PS4 setup guide describes this console-to-screen connection.
- Check that the monitor’s volume is up and neither the monitor nor an attached audio device is muted.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings and choose the appropriate HDMI output. HDMI is the usual route when the console is connected directly to a screen. Sony’s PS4 sound troubleshooting guidance also says to make sure the console audio output is set to an HDMI device.
A picture over HDMI does not prove that a monitor can play sound. The display needs built-in speakers or an audio output that can send the HDMI sound to headphones or speakers.
Check what audio connections your monitor actually has
Look up the exact monitor model in its manual or specifications. Check for built-in speakers and for an audio-out or headphone jack. A port labeled for audio input will not serve as an output, and monitor menus and port functions vary by model.

- Audio-out or headphone jack: Connect headphones or powered speakers that match the port. The monitor must receive HDMI audio and pass it through that output.
- No speakers or usable audio output: Use a headset connected to the PS4 controller, or consider an HDMI audio extractor if you need speakers or headphones elsewhere.
Powered desktop speakers need an audio signal from the monitor’s output or an extractor; simply plugging them into a display without an audio output will not provide sound.

Use a headset connected to the PS4 controller
A compatible headset connected to the controller is a straightforward option when you want private listening or the monitor cannot play audio. On the PS4, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones.
- Choose All Audio to hear game and system sound through the headset.
- Choose Chat Audio for chat only.
Sony’s PS4 audio output guide covers the headphone setting. The CUHYA-0080 headset manual describes Chat Audio as the default in its configuration.

Troubleshoot sound that is still missing
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. If possible, test another HDMI cable or monitor input.
- Temporarily disconnect intermediary equipment such as a capture device or other audio/video device, then connect the PS4 directly to the monitor.
- Recheck the monitor’s selected input, volume and mute state, and confirm in its manual whether it has speakers or an audio output.
- Review Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings on the PS4 and verify the HDMI output choice.
- If you use an HDMI audio extractor, remove it temporarily and test the direct PS4-to-monitor connection. This helps determine whether the issue is in the intermediary connection rather than the console or display.
Sony notes that a PS4 cannot output video and audio if a device connected via HDMI is not compatible with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). If the problem occurs only with an intermediary device, check its HDCP compatibility as well as its connection requirements.

When optical audio is an option
Optical audio is separate from the monitor’s HDMI connection and works only if the PS4 model has a DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port and the audio system accepts the selected format. Sony’s setup guide shows output-port layouts, and its audio output guide identifies a model exception: CUH-2000 series consoles do not have an optical digital output.

On a supported model, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings > Primary Output Port and select DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). Make sure the connected audio system supports the chosen format; Sony warns that unsupported output formats may damage speakers.

Using an HDMI audio extractor
An extractor can split audio from the HDMI signal so it can feed compatible headphones or speakers when the monitor has no useful audio path. Before choosing one, check that its HDMI pass-through supports the resolution and refresh rate you use, that the audio connector matches your equipment, and that it is compatible with the HDCP requirements of the complete connection. Those details depend on the specific PS4, display, extractor and audio device.
