For sharper iPhone Pro photos, keep the rear camera lenses clear, let Camera autofocus and set exposure, and hold the phone steady—especially in Night mode. For steadier video, use a controlled two-handed hold or a stable support; supported models also offer Enhanced Stabilization and Action mode, each with availability and framing trade-offs.
Get sharper still photos
Start with focus, exposure, and a clear lens
Check that nothing is covering or smudging the rear camera lenses. Camera normally focuses and adjusts exposure automatically. If the subject is not sharp, tap it in the viewfinder to set focus where you want it; available focus controls vary by model. If the image looks too bright or too dark, adjust exposure separately using the controls shown in Camera.
Focus and exposure do not stop a moving subject. If a person, pet, or object moves during capture, it can still appear blurred even when the phone is steady and focused.

Hold steady in dim light
In low light, Night mode may engage on supported models. Keep the iPhone still while it captures: Apple Support’s “Take great photos and videos” guide says, “Tap the Shutter button, then hold your iPhone steady for the best results.” The instruction is specifically about Night mode; holding still helps, but cannot guarantee that a moving subject will be sharp.

Give macro focus some space
On supported iPhones, Camera can switch to the Ultra Wide camera for macro capture at very close range. If a close-up looks blurry, do not keep moving closer: back up, or choose 0.5x if that option is available. Apple’s macro photo and video guide describes these options.
Reduce unwanted movement in video
Use a controlled handheld hold
Hold the phone with both hands, keep your elbows close to your body, and move smoothly rather than pivoting abruptly. These are practical ways to reduce hand movement, not a guarantee against shake. If the shot needs to stay fixed—for example, a self-recording or a static scene—an optional tripod can provide physical support. A tripod will not freeze movement within the scene.

Choose built-in stabilization with its trade-off in mind
On supported models, Enhanced Stabilization is available in Video or Cinematic mode and slightly zooms in to improve stabilization. The tighter framing is a trade-off, so leave room around the subject when composing. Action mode may help with more vigorous movement on supported models; Apple also provides an Action Mode Lower Light option on supported models. Feature availability depends on iPhone model and settings. Check Apple’s video recording settings guide for the controls on your device.

Keep accessories and vibration from undermining camera performance
Keep strong magnets away from the rear cameras
Apple warns that strong magnets or magnetisable metal near the rear camera can interfere with sensors used by optical image stabilization and closed-loop autofocus. Choose a mount or case that keeps magnetic parts away from the camera area. See Apple’s guidance on magnetic accessories and iPhone cameras, published January 22, 2024.

Avoid high-powered motorcycle vibration
Extended exposure to high-amplitude vibration can degrade camera stabilization and autofocus performance. Apple says, “It is not recommended to attach your iPhone to motorcycles with high-power or high-volume engines.” For certain lower-amplitude vehicle use, such as a scooter or drone, Apple recommends a vibration-dampening mount or gimbal and advises against prolonged regular exposure. This is a vehicle-mounting caution, not a general requirement for handheld filming. Read Apple’s vibration guidance, published November 10, 2023.

To retain settings you have chosen, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings and turn on the relevant options. Apple lists Exposure Adjustment and, on supported models, Night Mode, Macro Control, and Action Mode. The available switches depend on the iPhone model and iOS version, so use only those shown on your device.
