Choose a removal method for the number of bugs
These methods are aimed chiefly at the brown marmorated stink bug. If you are unsure what insect you have, check with your local Cooperative Extension service for identification and regional advice.
One visible bug: guide it into a container
- Move slowly so the bug is less likely to fly or drop into a hard-to-reach spot.
- Hold a cup or jar near it and use a stiff card or similar flat object to gently guide the bug inside. This is a practical way to collect it, rather than a formally tested protocol.
- Slide the card over the opening, then empty the bug into soapy water if you are willing to kill it. Avoid squeezing it against the container or card.

Several bugs: vacuum them up carefully
Vacuuming is convenient when bugs are scattered, but it can leave an unpleasant odor inside the machine. Empty the canister or bag promptly, preferably outdoors, and clean the vacuum according to its manufacturer’s instructions. A nylon stocking secured over the hose opening can serve as a removable collection insert: secure it without blocking the hose, collect the bugs, then remove and empty it outside.

Do not put soapy water into an ordinary vacuum. Washington State University describes a shop vacuum with soapy water in its canister; that guidance applies to an appropriate wet/dry shop vacuum, not to a standard dry vacuum. Repeated sightings: use a light-and-water trap as a supplement
In a dark room, place a light above a shallow pan of soapy water. The light attracts bugs toward the water, where they are captured and killed; this is not a live-release trap. Why crushing is a poor removal method
The EPA says disturbed or squashed brown marmorated stink bugs release an unpleasant odor from scent glands on their abdomen. Avoid pressing one with a tissue, shoe, or other object if preventing that odor is the goal. [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency]
Stop more stink bugs from getting inside
Removal deals with bugs you can see; exclusion addresses future entry. Inspect the places where the outside of your home meets openings or materials, and close suitable gaps with caulk or other appropriate materials.

- Check window and door frames, and repair or replace damaged screens.
- Inspect foundation cracks and joints in siding.
- Look for gaps around utility lines and other penetrations through walls.
- Check doors for gaps and fit suitable weatherstripping where needed.
Small openings matter: North Carolina Cooperative Extension reports stink bugs can enter through cracks as small as one sixteenth of an inch. Indoor spraying does not keep stink bugs from entering through gaps or emerging from hiding places. Iowa State University Extension says indoor spraying and bug bombs do not prevent entry, while Washington State University does not recommend indoor pesticide use to eradicate them. Focus on physical removal and sealing instead. If you are considering a pesticide for another reason, follow its label and consult your local extension or pesticide authority.
