For a workflow that needs a more controlled source, evaluate an options API against your requirements for feed freshness, access rights, fields, coverage, history, and permitted use. Alpaca documents option-chain snapshots, and MarketData.app documents an options-chain API and Python SDK; neither should be treated as universally reliable or suitable without checking its current terms.
Start with the documented yfinance options-chain interface
The current yfinance documentation uses Ticker.options to list available expiration dates and Ticker.option_chain(date) to request a chain for one expiration. The result exposes separate calls and puts tables.

This is the documented access pattern, not a guarantee that a request will succeed or return data appropriate for a particular use. Before using a result downstream, handle exceptions explicitly, record when you retrieved it and which expiration you requested, and check that the returned tables include the fields your application needs. Do not silently convert a request failure into an empty chain.
Make yfinance failures diagnosable
When a request fails, distinguish an exception in your Python client from a transient connection problem or an unavailable upstream response. The yfinance configuration documentation describes controls for logging, visible exceptions, retries, and proxies.

yf.config.debug.hide_exceptions = Falseso exceptions are not hidden. - Use the documented exponential-backoff retry configuration for transient failures, rather than retrying indefinitely.
- Configure a proxy only if it matches your actual network setup.
- Keep the exception and relevant response or request context in your logs. That record makes repeated failures easier to distinguish from a request that returned a valid but incomplete result.
These options help expose and handle client-side or temporary network problems; they do not provide an uptime commitment for Yahoo’s underlying service.
Define what reliable data means for your application
A successful API response is not necessarily usable for your purpose. Write down the requirements before choosing a replacement, because an exploratory notebook, an alerting dashboard, execution support, and historical research can need different data and permissions.

- Freshness and session: Decide how much delay is acceptable and whether you need data during regular trading or other sessions.
- Coverage: Specify the underlyings, expirations, and contracts you expect, including how you will detect missing strikes or expirations.
- Fields: List required quote and trade values, open interest, volume, implied volatility, and Greeks. Verify the endpoint’s actual response schema for your account and feed.
- History: Define the lookback and whether each field must represent the same point in time. This matters particularly for backtests.
- Scale: Estimate request volume and chain size, and determine whether pagination and provider rate limits fit the design.
- Use and access: Confirm your account’s entitlement and user classification, plus the provider’s current terms for personal or professional use, trading, and redistribution.
Compare documented options-chain sources by their constraints
Two documented alternatives are Alpaca’s option-chain snapshot endpoint and MarketData.app’s options-chain API. Their documentation describes different access and data details; it does not establish a universal reliability ranking or a complete comparison of current pricing and quotas.

MarketData.app also documents a Python SDK with methods including chain(), expirations(), quotes(), and lookup(). A client library can simplify requests, but it does not remove the need to verify entitlement, field semantics, and the API’s current limits.

Check historical timestamps before backtesting
Historical option fields may not share one as-of time. MarketData.app specifically cautions that open interest, quotes, volume, and other measures can refer to different times. A historical row can therefore look like a single synchronized market snapshot when its fields were not actually measured together. Read the provider’s definition for every field used in a point-in-time strategy, and preserve those timestamps or timing rules with your data.

Before wiring a provider into a consequential workflow, test a small, representative sample of underlyings and expirations against the provider’s documentation or another source to which you are entitled. Record the feed and retrieval time alongside every stored result, then check:

- Whether bid and ask values are valid for the relevant market session.
- Whether contract identifiers, expirations, and strikes match your expected coverage.
- Whether expected contracts or fields are missing, and how the application handles that absence.
- Whether timestamps and feed mode are consistent with the delay your application allows.
This is a validation approach, not a claim that either provider or the yfinance example has been tested here. Recheck provider documentation before implementation: endpoint behavior, feed access, entitlement, quotas, pricing, and terms can change.
