The exact menu and the events that trigger an alert differ by platform: a setting may cover comments directly on your post but not replies elsewhere in the thread, and delivery may be by push, in-app notification, SMS, or email.
Choose the service where you posted
Use the instructions for the account or website you own or manage. Menu names and available channels can vary by device, region, account, and app version, so check the service’s current labels if they do not match.
- Open Settings & Privacy.
- Choose Notifications.
- Open the relevant category under Posting and commenting, then enable the available option for Comments and reactions.
- Check the delivery settings as well as the category toggle. If you want push alerts, make sure in-app notifications are enabled.
LinkedIn’s own troubleshooting guidance says to reset Comments and reactions and the related delivery options if alerts are not arriving. It says notifications should begin appearing within 48–72 hours after that reset; this is LinkedIn’s estimate for its troubleshooting process, not a general delivery guarantee.
- On reddit.com, open Settings, then Notifications. In the app, open the account’s notification controls.
- Enable the desired comment notification type.
Reddit distinguishes a direct comment on your post (a “parent comment”) from a reply to another person’s comment. Its Help article says that enabling comment notifications for your posts covers the direct comment, but you will not be notified when someone replies to someone else’s comment. So a quiet notification feed does not necessarily mean the setting is broken.

WordPress.com site owners
- Open your site dashboard and go to Settings → Discussion.
- Under Email me whenever, enable Anyone posts a comment.
- If you also want to know when a comment is held for moderation, enable that email option separately.
These alerts go to the email address associated with the account. This setting is for a WordPress.com site owner; it is not a way for a visitor to follow comments on someone else’s social post.
Facebook Help describes selecting SMS for comments on status updates and posts through Profile → Settings & privacy → Settings → Notifications, then expanding a notification category and choosing SMS. The Help result may not reflect every current interface: labels and SMS availability can vary by account and region, so verify the options shown in your settings.

Instagram’s notification controls include alerts for interactions with your content, including comments. Look under Settings → Notifications → Push notifications, then check the current interaction and comment options in your app. The available labels can differ by locale and account.
What to check when comment alerts do not arrive
- Enable the category in the service. Device notification permission alone does not turn on a comment category that is disabled inside the app or account.
- Check the delivery channel. Confirm that the selected option—such as push, in-app, SMS, or email—is available and that the destination device or account can receive it.
- Confirm the event qualifies. On Reddit, for example, a reply to another commenter is outside the direct-post comment alert described by Reddit Help.
- Use that service’s troubleshooting steps. For LinkedIn, reset the comment and related delivery settings as described above; allow for the 48–72-hour period LinkedIn gives for alerts to start appearing after its reset.
Do not assume every comment will generate an immediate alert. The controls described here establish notification settings, not a universal guarantee about timing or every event.
