To get alerts for new posts, subscribe to the Substack publication, then choose email, app push notifications, or both in your Substack delivery settings. Push requires the Substack app and permission for notifications on your phone; email requires a working account address and messages that are not blocked or filtered.
Subscribe to the publication
Open the publication’s Substack page and subscribe with your account. A free subscription is enough to receive posts the publication makes available to free subscribers. Posts marked paid-only require the appropriate paid access. Subscribed publications’ new posts also appear in the app Inbox. Substack’s subscription guide explains how to subscribe.
Choose email, push notifications, or both
Substack provides delivery preferences for new posts. Email sends posts to your inbox; push can surface them on your phone; the combined option keeps both channels selected. Substack does not publish a measured comparison showing that one channel is universally faster or more reliable.
In the mobile app
- Open the Substack app and tap your profile menu.
- Go to Settings → Notifications → Newsletter Delivery.
- Choose Prefer email, Prefer push, or the option for both, according to where you want new posts delivered.
On desktop
- Open your Substack account settings.
- Find Newsletter delivery.
- Choose email, push, or both. The exact wording may vary slightly from the app.
Substack’s iOS delivery guidance, updated September 10, 2026, describes smart notifications: app users primarily receive push alerts and may receive email for posts they missed if they have not opened the app for a while. Therefore, choosing push does not mean every post will also arrive by email.

Allow Substack push notifications on your phone
Choosing push in Substack is not enough if notifications are disabled at the device level. On Android, Substack documents a New posts notification category for posts by writers you subscribe to. Menu labels can vary by Android version and device manufacturer.
- In the Substack app, open Settings → Notifications → Push Notifications settings.
- Open the device’s Notification categories and make sure New posts is enabled.
- Check your phone’s app notification permission for Substack and allow notifications.
Substack’s Android notification guidance covers app notification controls. If you use iOS, check that Substack is allowed to send notifications in your device settings as well.

Enable newly added publication sections
Some publications divide their posts into sections. If you already subscribe and want posts from a section the publication added later, check that section’s subscription setting: go to Settings → Subscriptions, select the publication, and turn on the relevant section. This setting affects receipt by email and in the app Inbox. Substack’s subscription-management guidance explains how to manage publication subscriptions.
Troubleshoot missing post notifications
Work through the checks that match the channel you expected to receive.

If an email did not arrive
- Confirm that you are still subscribed, and check that the email address on your Substack account is correct.
- Look in spam and, in Gmail, the Promotions tab. If a Substack email is incorrectly marked as spam, mark it as not spam; you can move it to Primary if you prefer.
- Check your delivery preference. If Prefer push is selected, new posts are sent by phone push rather than email. Select Prefer email or the combined option if you want email delivery.
- Try the publication-specific email test: visit
publicationname.substack.com/account/email-testfor that publication, sign in, and select Send test email. Replacepublicationnamewith the publication’s Substack subdomain. If email is disabled because you unsubscribed, subscribe again. - If Substack reports that your address is blocked, follow its instructions. Corporate or government email filters may need to be adjusted by your organization’s IT team.

If a push notification did not appear
- Verify that you selected push or the combined delivery option in Substack.
- Confirm that the Substack app’s device-level notification permission is allowed and that the New posts category is enabled on Android.
- Check whether the post is available to your subscription level and whether you are subscribed to the publication section that sent it.
Posts and Notes use different notifications
A publication post is not the same as a Substack Note. Notes do not trigger newsletter email in the same way as posts. Substack says the web activity bell can notify readers and followers about Notes; app push may be sent for a first Note or unseen Notes, but not for every Note. If you want alerts about Notes, review the New notes notification setting and do not expect each Note to arrive by email. See Substack’s Notes notification guidance, updated May 6, 2025.
