For a more useful ChatGPT clothing try-on, use a clear photo, identify the exact clothing item, and say which visible detail you want the image to focus on. You can start from an eligible product listing’s Try on button or upload an item photo in a chat. The result is a visual preview—not a measurement or a reliable indication of fit or size.
Choose a ChatGPT try-on workflow
ChatGPT offers two ways to create a clothing or accessory preview. The built-in shopping option is available on eligible product listings; alternatively, you can provide an item photo in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. OpenAI describes the generated try-on as using ChatGPT Images. OpenAI’s shopping instructions explain the listing flow and its limitations.
- On a clothing or accessory listing that displays Try on, select that option.
- Take or upload a selfie, then view the generated image.
- For the chat-based route, upload a photo of the clothing or accessory and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you.
If you save a reference photo, OpenAI says you can manage, replace, or delete it in Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. Availability and product-listing eligibility can change; the official help page is the place to check current details.

Prepare an image ChatGPT can interpret
Use an image that is clear rather than ambiguous or difficult to interpret. OpenAI’s image-input guidance says unclear images can reduce accuracy and that annotating an image can help direct attention to highlighted elements.

- Do not assume a particular pose, lens, lighting setup, or background is a proven way to improve clothing try-on accuracy. The cited guidance gives no clothing-specific photo setup or tested recommendation.
- Keep expectations focused on visual representation: image clarity and annotations are general image-input tips, not a guarantee that the garment or your appearance will be reproduced exactly.
Write a specific request, then review the result
Name the item and the visible feature you care about. If you want an edit, describe the change in chat or use the image editor’s selection tool and identify the area to change. OpenAI’s image-editing instructions note that selections may be imprecise and an edit can extend beyond the selected area, so inspect the whole image afterward.
For example, you could write:
“Show how this [specific clothing item] could look on me using the uploaded photo. Keep the rest of the image unchanged as much as possible. Focus on [specific visible feature, such as color or neckline]. This is only a visual preview; do not claim a size or fit.”

This is suggested wording, not a tested prompt or a guarantee of greater accuracy. It makes the desired item and visual focus explicit, but the generated image can still differ from the product or from your appearance.
Use merchant details—not the image—to judge fit or size
A try-on image cannot tell you whether a garment will fit or which size to buy. OpenAI warns that try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size. Before purchasing, check the merchant’s garment measurements, product details, and return policy. No particular camera accessory or measurement tool is required by the cited guidance.
