There is no single Wayland switch that makes every Linux gaming overlay work. The right setup depends on what you mean by “overlay”: MangoHud displays performance metrics, Steam Overlay provides Steam’s in-game interface, and Gamescope supplies compositor features such as scaling and frame-rate limiting. MangoHud’s documented Gamescope setup specifically uses mangoapp; the project says the ordinary MangoHud path with Gamescope is unsupported.
Which Linux gaming overlay do you need?
| What you want | Tool | What its documentation establishes | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance metrics such as an in-game HUD | MangoHud | Vulkan and OpenGL overlays, a Steam launch option, and a separate Gamescope path | Under Gamescope, use the documented mangoapp path; ordinary MangoHud is marked unsupported. |
| Steam’s in-game interface | Steam Overlay | Steam documents overlay support for DirectX 7–12, OpenGL, Metal, and Vulkan. | The documentation does not provide a universal Wayland compatibility guarantee or a compositor-by-compositor matrix. |
| Scaling and frame-rate limiting | Gamescope | Gamescope documents these compositor features and game-launch examples for X11 or Wayland desktops. | Gamescope features do not establish that another overlay layer will appear or respond. |
These tools do different jobs. A missing performance HUD does not by itself mean Steam Overlay is broken, and a Gamescope scaling option is not an overlay fix.
Does MangoHud work on Wayland?
MangoHud’s project documentation describes an overlay for Vulkan and OpenGL applications and provides a Steam launch option. That is useful setup guidance, but it is not a guarantee for every combination of game, graphics path, desktop compositor, driver, or sandbox. The project’s README is a moving document, so its instructions are not tied here to a specific release.

Enable MangoHud for a Steam game
- Install MangoHud using the package route appropriate to your Linux distribution, or follow the README’s Flatpak instructions if your Steam installation is sandboxed. Package and access requirements can differ between a native Steam client and a sandboxed one.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, then find Launch Options.
- Enter
mangohud %command%and launch the game. - If the HUD does not appear, identify whether the game is running through Gamescope before changing launch options. The Gamescope case uses a different MangoHud integration.
See the MangoHud README for its installation and Steam-launch instructions.

Why does MangoHud disappear in Gamescope?
Gamescope changes the relevant integration path. MangoHud’s project documentation says to install mangoapp and launch Gamescope with its MangoHud integration, rather than placing ordinary MangoHud in the game launch chain. The README states: “Using normal mangohud with gamescope is not supported.”
Use the documented Gamescope launch form
- Install the
mangoappcomponent using the method appropriate to your distribution and installation. - Use the Gamescope launch form
gamescope --mangoapp -- %command%for the game. - Check that the game is actually being launched through this Gamescope instance and that the MangoHud components are accessible to the Steam/game environment.
Do not treat mangohud %command% as interchangeable with the documented Gamescope form. MangoHud’s Gamescope instructions describe the separate mangoapp route.

What Gamescope can—and cannot—fix
Gamescope is a compositor, not a universal compatibility layer for every HUD. Its documentation includes game-launch examples for X11 and Wayland desktops and options for display behavior. For example, gamescope -r 30 -- %command% requests a 30-frame-per-second limit. That option controls Gamescope behavior; it is not a remedy for Steam Overlay activation or a substitute for MangoHud’s mangoapp integration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGamescope also documents scaling-related options. Their availability and exact effect depend on the configuration used, so consult the Gamescope README rather than assuming a scaling option will make an unrelated overlay render correctly.

Does the Steam overlay work with Wayland?
Steamworks describes the Steam Overlay as an in-game Steam interface, gives Shift+Tab as its default shortcut, and lists support for DirectX 7–12, OpenGL, Metal, and Vulkan. That list establishes the rendering APIs named in the documentation; it does not establish blanket native-Wayland support across desktops, drivers, or Gamescope configurations.
If Shift+Tab does nothing, distinguish the symptom before changing the setup: the overlay may fail to draw, the keyboard shortcut may not reach it, or pointer input may fail after it opens. Those are different failure modes. The official Steam Overlay documentation describes the feature and API support, but does not provide a Wayland-compositor compatibility matrix.

How to narrow down a Wayland overlay problem
Change one variable at a time and note which layer is involved. The available project documentation is not a comprehensive test matrix, so a successful setup on one machine should not be generalized to every Wayland desktop.
- Name the overlay: MangoHud performance metrics, Steam’s interface, and Gamescope display controls have separate setup paths.
- Check the rendering path: MangoHud documents Vulkan and OpenGL support. Steamworks lists its overlay APIs, but neither statement guarantees every game configuration.
- Confirm whether Gamescope is in the launch path: if it is, MangoHud’s documented route is
mangoapp, not ordinary MangoHud. - Check installation boundaries: a Flatpak or other sandboxed client/game may have different package and access requirements from a native installation.
- Describe the failure precisely: record whether the overlay is absent, does not open with its shortcut, or opens but does not accept pointer input. The cited documents do not settle every such combination.
A project-specific desktop toggle is not a universal fix
Kasual Desktop documents a project-specific way to toggle MangoHud by editing its configuration file. Its README also lists prerequisites and a configuration override caveat. This is an example of one desktop project’s integration, not a general Wayland setting that applies to other compositors. Follow the Kasual Desktop README only when using that project and its documented setup.
