For most receiver-based home theaters, connect the Fire TV Stick to an HDMI input on the AV receiver, then connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV. This lets the receiver handle the Stick’s audio directly. A TV-first setup can also work if the television and receiver support the needed audio format over HDMI ARC or eARC.
Choose the connection that fits your equipment
Amazon’s documented troubleshooting route is to connect the Fire TV device directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar or AV receiver, then connect that device to the TV. The receiver must support the Stick’s video and audio formats. Check the manuals for your specific models and use a high-speed HDMI cable, as Amazon recommends.
| Connection | When to use it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick → receiver → TV | Start here for a receiver-based surround system. | The receiver accepts the Stick’s video formats and supports the audio format you want. |
| Fire TV Stick → TV → receiver over ARC/eARC | Use this when the TV is the HDMI switch or the receiver gets audio from the TV’s return-audio connection. | The TV, ARC/eARC connection, and receiver all support the audio format you want. |
| Optical audio | Consider only as a fallback if the TV and receiver both have optical ports. | Amazon cautions that optical does not fully support surround sound. |
ARC and eARC are audio-return connections: they carry audio from the TV to a connected receiver. Connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC when using that route. The TV and receiver may also need HDMI-CEC enabled; manufacturers use different names and menu paths for these settings.

Connect the Fire TV Stick to an AV receiver
- Check the ports. Find an HDMI input on the receiver suitable for the Stick and identify the receiver’s HDMI output. If using a TV-return-audio setup, locate the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
- Connect the Stick to the receiver. Plug it into the receiver’s HDMI input. Use a high-speed HDMI cable for the receiver-to-TV connection if your setup requires a separate cable.
- Connect the receiver to the TV. Run an HDMI cable from the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV. For ARC/eARC audio return, use the TV port labeled ARC or eARC.
- Select the receiver input. Set the receiver to the HDMI input where the Stick is connected.
- Set the TV’s audio output if needed. Choose the receiver or external audio system in the TV’s sound settings. Enable ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC on the TV and receiver if their manuals call for them.
For the TV-first route, connect the Stick to a TV HDMI input and connect the receiver to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. This arrangement depends on the TV being able to send the desired format back to the receiver; the presence of an ARC/eARC port alone does not guarantee every format will pass.

Check support for the format you want
Surround sound depends on more than the Stick’s HDMI connection. The Fire TV model, receiver, TV when audio passes through it, and the streaming title must support the format. Amazon’s device specifications list audio passthrough by model, so check the specifications for your exact Stick rather than assuming it supports a particular format.
Dolby Atmos likewise requires compatible equipment and a title that supports Atmos. A receiver can only play a format it receives and supports; a cable cannot add format support that a device lacks.

Fix missing surround sound or stereo-only playback
- Check the title. Confirm that the movie or show offers surround sound or the specific format you expect.
- Confirm the signal path. Check that the receiver is connected to the correct HDMI input, that its HDMI output connects to the TV, and that the receiver is set to the Stick’s input. For a TV-first setup, verify the TV’s audio output and ARC/eARC connection.
- Check device compatibility. Confirm the Stick, receiver, and—if audio passes through it—the TV support the desired format.
- Use Fire TV diagnostics when available. Open Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio/Video Diagnostics and check which audio formats are detected. The tool may not be available on every model.
- Adjust the audio format. If the desired format is not detected, try a lower audio format and consult the manuals for the connected devices. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing the format setting when the desired format is not detected.
If the picture appears but sound comes from the TV speakers, check the TV’s sound-output selection, the receiver’s selected input, and the ARC/CEC configuration. Menu labels vary by manufacturer, so use the device manuals for the exact setting names.
Understand audio settings before changing them
Fire TV audio menus differ by device. Amazon describes PCM, Dolby Digital, Passthrough, and Auto in its guidance for Fire TV Smart TVs; those labels and explanations should not be assumed to apply identically to every Fire TV Stick.

- PCM: Sends uncompressed audio to HDMI ARC or optical output, according to Amazon’s Fire TV Smart TV guidance.
- Dolby Digital: Sends Dolby Digital audio to HDMI ARC or optical output, according to the same guidance.
- Passthrough: Sends the source signal without changing its format. Amazon says the Smart TV setting defaults to 5.1-channel digital output and supports up to 7.1 channels.
- Auto: Selects a format based on the connected device or output.
Where Auto is available, it is a reasonable starting point. If sound is missing or limited to stereo, try a lower setting that the connected equipment supports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When optical is the only available connection
Optical can provide audio if both devices have optical ports, but Amazon warns that optical cables do not fully support surround sound. If surround playback is the goal, HDMI through the receiver or a compatible ARC/eARC path is the better route when your equipment supports it.
