The quickest way to let an AI agent inspect an existing Figma design is to connect an MCP client to Figma and call get_screenshot on a frame, layer, or other selection. The tool returns a PNG view that preserves the selection’s visual layout. If your goal is different—capturing a running website into Figma as editable layers—use Figma’s remote MCP capture workflow instead.
This guide covers both workflows, remote and desktop server setup, selection and link requirements, asset export, troubleshooting, and a browser-free alternative for ordinary website screenshots.

Figma describes get_screenshot as allowing an agent to “take a screenshot of your selection.” It is a visual-inspection tool, not an asset-download endpoint. See the official tools and prompts documentation.
Set up Figma MCP (recommended remote server)
Figma recommends its remote MCP server. It does not require the Figma desktop app. You do need a compatible MCP client, such as an editor or agent that supports MCP, and an account that can access the target file. The current remote endpoint is:

- Open your MCP client’s server configuration.
- Add an HTTP MCP server using
https://mcp.figma.com/mcp. - Start the server in the client and approve the requested Figma access.
- Open the Figma file, copy the URL of the target frame or layer, and include that link in your prompt.
- Ask the agent to inspect or screenshot the linked object, for example: “Use get_screenshot on this frame and describe spacing, typography, and visual hierarchy.”
Configuration labels differ by client, so use Figma’s remote-server installation guide and the client-specific instructions linked from Figma’s MCP introduction. Figma documents remote MCP as available on all seats and plans, but client support and service terms can change.
Why a frame or layer link matters
With remote MCP, the client needs a frame or layer URL so it can identify the node. The agent is not expected to browse an entire file and guess your intended object. Copy the link from Figma’s share or context menu, then paste it into the prompt. A desktop server also supports selection-based prompting, which is useful when the object is already selected on your canvas.
Use the desktop MCP server when local selection is important
The desktop path requires the Figma desktop app. Open or create a Figma Design file, switch to Dev Mode, and enable the desktop MCP server in the inspect panel. Configure your MCP client with:

- Launch Figma desktop and open the design file.
- Switch to Dev Mode.
- In the inspect panel, enable the desktop MCP server.
- Add

If tools do not appear, restart both the Figma desktop app and the MCP client. Figma’s complete procedure is in the desktop-server installation guide. Figma currently states that desktop MCP is available to Dev or Full seats on paid plans; verify your seat and plan because access rules are subject to change.

- Open the target file in Figma.
- Choose the exact frame, component, layer, FigJam object, or Slides object you want the agent to see.
- For remote MCP, copy its frame or layer link. For desktop MCP, you may rely on the current selection.
- In the MCP client, request
get_screenshotand state what the agent should analyze. - Review the returned PNG-backed context. Ask follow-up questions about alignment, colors, hierarchy, responsive variants, or implementation details.
Leave the screenshot tool enabled unless your client is close to its token limit; Figma recommends it because visual context helps preserve layout fidelity in generated code. The tool returns a rendered PNG and is supported for Figma Design, FigJam, and Figma Slides.
Useful prompt pattern
Use get_screenshot on the linked frame. Identify the page grid, spacing scale, typography hierarchy, component states, and any elements that are clipped or hidden. Do not infer text that is not visible.Capture a live website into a new Figma file
This is a different operation from taking a PNG of an existing Figma selection. Figma documents it through the remote MCP server for select MCP clients. The result is an editable Figma representation of the running interface.

https://mcp.figma.com/mcp. - Prompt the client: “Start a local server for my app homepage and capture the UI in a new Figma file.”
- Follow the client’s browser instructions to start the local app.
- Use the browser capture toolbar to choose pages, individual elements, and states.
- Open the Figma file link returned by the client and inspect the created layers.
Do not assume every MCP client exposes this capture feature: Figma documents it for select clients. The current workflow is described in Figma’s get-started guide.
Use download_assets when you need files, not visual context
Choose download_assets when the deliverable is an image or document rather than an agent-visible screenshot. It supports multiple nodes, PNG/JPG/SVG/PDF export choices, export settings, full-resolution assets, and original uploaded source images. Common errors and fixes
The MCP tools never appear
- Confirm the server URL has no typo: remote is
https://mcp.figma.com/mcp; desktop ishttp://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp. - Restart the client and, for desktop MCP, restart Figma. Recheck that the desktop server is enabled in Dev Mode.
- Verify that your client supports MCP and that Figma access approval completed.
The agent cannot identify the design object
- Remote MCP requires a frame or layer link. Copy a link to the exact node rather than the file’s home URL.
- With desktop MCP, select the object in the open desktop file before prompting.
- Check that you have permission to view the file and node.
The screenshot is the wrong size or state
- Select the intended frame, not a parent page or a similarly named component.
- Ask for a specific variant or state and include its frame/layer link.
- For a live-site capture, select the required page, element, and interaction state in the browser capture toolbar.
You need an SVG, PDF, or original image
get_screenshot only supplies a rendered PNG view. Switch to download_assets, choose the required format or source-image option, and retrieve the temporary URL promptly.

Remote capture is unavailable in your client
Use get_screenshot for an existing Figma selection, or choose a client listed in Figma’s current capture documentation. The live UI workflow is not documented as universal across all MCP clients.

Access, privacy, and reliability considerations
- Use remote MCP when you do not want the desktop app running or when your client is configured for HTTP MCP.
- Use desktop MCP when local selection-based prompting is central to your workflow and your paid seat is eligible.
- Share only frame or layer links that the agent is authorized to view.
- For repeatable analysis, keep the target node stable and record the file version or state in your prompt.
- For exported assets, download temporary URLs immediately and store the resulting files in your own controlled location.
- Figma notes that MCP availability and future pricing may change, so check its current documentation before deploying an automated workflow.
